So 2019 wasn't my best reading year. I had a long reading slump early on and I ended up not finishing any challenges. With the exception of 1 challenge, I did manage to finish at least halfway through though. Here's to 2020!
#LitsyAtoZ - 19/26 @BookishMarginalia
#ReadingUSA2019 - 22/50 @Librarybelle

Librarybelle They are still really good numbers! 4w

An alien ship suddenly appears over #StThomas, with the islanders required to learn to live alongside the mostly peaceful race. The catch? If they feel threatened, they can and will rip people apart. I enjoyed the story, but as with other reviewers, it just didn‘t come all the way together for me. Great idea but not fully realized.

Librarybelle Nice picking up a bonus! 1mo

Widower and single dad Bill‘s daughter Summer disappears and this then found badly beaten. He is driven to rash actions trying to learn what happened to her. I guessed most of the twists and thus burned a bit more slowly than I would like in a thriller. A soft pick, but still a pick.

Librarybelle Nice! 1mo
ljuliel Very good M 1mo
BarbaraBB You‘re doing good! How many states left? 1mo

1. I‘ve been doing Goodreads challenge for years. I‘ve tried others, this year #ReadingUSA2019, and I‘m not too good at them because my attention is drawn elsewhere. I am doing pretty good at #BBRC.
2. I‘m going to try #ReadtheUSA2020-36 state choices shown above. And I thought of a couple easy challenges I‘ll share here to try to be more successful at them.

ljuliel Wow ! I‘m impressed. You are so organized ! It looks like you‘ve made lots of good choices for the upcoming year ! 1mo
megnews @ljuliel I‘m really good at planning. Execution is sometimes a different matter. 😂 But I‘m going to try! These are mostly books that have been in my tbr for awhile anyway. (edited) 1mo
ljuliel Well, I wish you luck this year. Just take one at a time and you‘ll get there. Sometimes when I look at the big picture, it‘s a bit intimidating , so I‘m going to try picking one state at a time. I think different strategies work for different people.. we‘ll all just do our best. 😊 1mo

TheSpineView You are so organized! I should do that! Happy Tuesday! 1mo
Hooked_on_books It‘s a fun challenge. I‘m on my final state and excited to be about to complete it. I actually almost didn‘t plan at all. But everyone works best it different ways. The hashtags helped me when I was struggling with certain states. 1mo
megnews @Hooked_on_books I didn‘t plan last year. I started late & just wanted to see what states I covered with my normal picks. Heavy in nyc & southern fiction. The choices here are *mostly* from my tbr so I think I should be able to do it because I‘m not forcing myself to read a book I don‘t want to to check it off the list. I have lots of other loose monthly themed books I want to read as well so we‘ll see how it goes. I‘m not stressing it. 1mo
Hooked_on_books That‘s a great approach. I really tried to read what I would have read anyway as well. And there are so many NYC books! I‘ve definitely noticed that, too. Also lots of authors live there. I‘m looking at the Europe challenge now for 2020 and it‘s the same thing with England. Some of those countries are going to be really tough. But, like you, I‘m not stressing it. Reading should be fun. 1mo
sblbooks Is #BBRC the one where you read all age ranges and are they doing that again this year? Is there a link? 1mo
megnews @sblbooks. Yes it‘s birth and beyond. I believe it runs July-June so it‘s not too late to join and it‘s a lot of fun. @LibrarianRyan could you post the link here? 1mo

Fa. Scin. A. Ting! From the importance of scent to the influence a plate‘s size/color has on how we perceive food (and how much we eat), this book delves into the biology and psychology of food choices backed by research. I got so much out of this book and enjoyed it utterly. You could even call it delectable. 😉

One state to go! 🎉

Librarybelle Woohoo! And, the book does sound fascinating! 1mo
ljuliel Wow, great job on almost being done ! 1mo
squirrelbrain Nearly there - and this book sounds fab! 👍😁 1mo

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds fascinating...stacking! 1mo
Addison_Reads Awesome! You're almost there. 😁 1mo
vivastory Sounds really intriguing! About 3 years ago I decided to retry, with an open mind, all of the foods that I didn't like & hadn't consumed in years. There were some big surprises. Especially avocado & olives. 1mo
Hooked_on_books @vivastory We should probably all do that! She actually doesn‘t much get into how tastes change, other than some stuff in childhood and the loss of smell as we age. 1mo
NatalieR Way to go! Keep it up! 1mo

Bookwormjillk Cool! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I like the way this list is sorted with a newer fiction, a nonfiction, and a “famous“ fiction. Thanks for the link!! 1mo
AnneFindsJoy Ooh great link! I have 19 states to go in #readingUSA2019 which I‘ll just continue into 2020. (edited) 1mo

ljuliel @Bookwormjillk 😊 @TheAromaofBooks yes, it does have a nice way of listing them. I like having a nonfiction choice , as I read a lot of it. 1mo
Hoopiefoot Thanks for sharing—this is a really great list! 1mo
ljuliel That sounds good @AnneFindsJoy I‘ll add you onto the tagged list since you‘ll be doing the exact same thing we are. ❤️. You may have some helpful answers for the states you‘ve completed if we get stuck. Keep going, you‘re doing great. 1mo
ljuliel @Hoopiefoot Yea, I thought it was really neat too. 1mo
Amiable I just took a look at this list and the other one that you posted -- I was pleasantly surprised to see that I've already read a fair number of the books! I'm going to make a spreadsheet and fill out the states I've already read to help me focus on the ones I have not. 1mo
ljuliel Sounds fine to me. 🙂. Whatever way works best for each person sounds good. If I had kept a list of everything I‘ve read, I‘ve probably hit most of the states by now, but , Alas.....I‘m not very organized. Maybe I should try harder to be organized this year. @amiable 1mo
Amiable I think I tend to gravitate towards books that are in my comfort zone (which means I avoid westerns and the like). By filling out the spreadsheet with the books I've already read, that is going to force me to be more intentional in what I'm picking up. I hope. (edited) 1mo
ljuliel I understand about the Westerns. I wasn‘t much interested in them before seeing the LD miniseries all those years ago.It was SO GOOD , I went to the bookstore the next day to buy the book. When I came to the McMurtry shelf, there were about 6 others there, all picking up LD. We all started talking about our favorite characters and how good it was . Beautiful writing. Picture John Irving with a cowboy hat. I‘ve become a Western fan since then @Amiable 1mo
Scochrane26 I like the choices for Ky much better on this list. Bobbie Ann Mason is a Well-known writer, although I haven‘t read Clear Springs yet. I think it became a movie. The other one I haven‘t read, but anything about horse racing definitely defines central Ky. 1mo
Scochrane26 I‘ll look at the rest of the list soon. It looked like some good ones were on there. Not sure yet if I will participate in this challenge, I might try to do half the states. 1mo
Branwen This is really cool! I think I'm going to start doing this in the new year! 😀💕📚 1mo
Amiable OK, so I made a spreadsheet. I decided to go back just one year and list the books I've read in 2018 and 2019. Using that time period I've covered 26 states. But I'm frankly embarrassed by how many of the books that I've read lately that are set in New York. 1mo
ljuliel @Scochrane26 You know, I honestly can‘t remember if I‘ve read any of Mason‘s books. If I haven‘t, I should. Didn‘t she write one about a girl whose uncle was sent to Vietnam ? Or is that someone else ? I‘ll add your name to the Tag List. If you want to play along, it‘s fine, and if not, it‘s ok too. I‘ll include you in the updates just in case. If you no longer want them, holler, and I‘ll take your name back off. 😊 1mo
ljuliel That sounds great @Branwen 😊. I‘ll add you to the list. Feel free to start anytime. 1mo
ljuliel @amiable That‘s interesting. I know I‘ve seen others mention that a lot of their books are set in NY. Wonder why ? Lots of writers from there , or maybe the location makes for a good story. I‘ve not kept track of my books , but plan to do so this year. 👍🏼 1mo
jessinikkip @ljuliel I noticed that in #ReadingUSA2019 that a TON of my books were in NY or CA 1mo
ljuliel Maybe the population ? More writers per state ? I don‘t know. @jessinikkip 1mo
Scochrane26 @ljuliel Just checking—the guidelines are where the book is set, not necessarily that the author is from there? And the book you‘re thinking of by Mason is In Country. I have it at home but haven‘t read it. I‘ve read 2 of her others. 1mo
ljuliel @Scochrane26 I think it‘s up to each person and how they want to interpret it .Either way is fine with me. You can go with all settings or with the author. 1mo

#BookReport 50/19

I finished these three books this week. Kindred was a pick, Mr Nishino a so-so and Sharp Objects a pan for me. All in all not a very memorable reading week.
However, I did finish #ReadingUSA2019!

squirrelbrain Oh, I just posted on your other post that you must‘ve nearly finished! Yay for you! It feels good doesn‘t it?! 😘 2mo
Cinfhen Yay for completing #ReadingUSA2019 💙♥️🇺🇸 (edited) 2mo

Sharp Objects: A Novel | Gillian Flynn
post image

I really wonder what Gillian Flynn was trying to prove with this book? To create some utterly unrealistic characters (the mother, the 13 years olds) doing cruel gruesome things to eachother, and an ending that to me was obvious from the start. I know it‘s an #unpopularopinion but I really felt only annoyed by this book.

#ReadingUSA2019 #Missouri

Cinfhen I didn‘t like this one either 2mo
squirrelbrain That‘s a bit rubbish! But at least another state ticked off the list - you must be nearly there now? 2mo

Librarybelle I really have no interest to read this one. Your review helps me feel good not wanting to read it! 2mo
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle You‘re wise to not read it. There are many books out there much more worth reading! 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I‘m glad to hear that. I thought everybody loved it! 1mo
Cinfhen The premise was SO RIDICULOUS/ it pissed me off. I‘m pretty sure I had lengthy discussions with @Foxyfictionista who HATED THIS book too! 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I was pissed off during the whole book. It kept getting more ridiculous and predictable at the same time. 😤 😉 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I‘ll try to find your discussion with @Foxyfictionista 😘 1mo
Foxyfictionista @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen oh this book...🤬 1mo
Centique What a beautiful photo! 1mo
BarbaraBB @Centique Thank you. I took it on my way to work! 1mo
Cinfhen Hi @Foxyfictionista what you been reading lately!??!! Haven‘t seen you on Litsy in FOREVER 😞 1mo
Foxyfictionista @Cinfhen i know! I kind of got away from Litsy in the past year or so. I love the community but i just needed a break, i guess. I keep thinking I'll get back on it. Maybe this is the nudge i needed. Thank you! ❤️ 1mo
youneverarrived This photo is gorgeous! 1mo
BarbaraBB @Foxyfictionista I hope so! I just started following you, you‘ve been reading all my kind of books. So I hope you will start posting again! 1mo
Cinfhen Lots of friends left Litsy 😢😢😢 @Foxyfictionista I‘m glad you‘re well and do hope you‘ll post again xx Happy Holidays 💚❤️ 1mo
Foxyfictionista @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen thank you both! I hope you have a lovely Christmas! 🎄💖 1mo
Reggie I liked this one but I could not read anything remotely dark for months!!! 1mo
jeannasser I agree with you, but I do love Flynn's writing style. It helped elevate some parts of the story. 1mo
