Nnedi Okorafor's first novel for middle grade readers introduces a boy who can access super powers with the help of the magical Ikenga. Nnamdi's father was a good chief of police, perhaps the best Kalaria had ever had. He was determined to root out the criminals that had invaded the town. But then he was murdered, and most people believed the Chief of Chiefs, most powerful of the criminals, was responsible. Nnamdi has vowed to avenge his father, but he wonders what a twelve-year-old boy can do. Until a mysterious nighttime meeting, the gift of a magical object that enables super powers, and a charge to use those powers for good changes his life forever. How can he fulfill his mission? How will he learn to control his newfound powers? Award-winning Nnedi Okorafor, acclaimed for her Akata novels, introduces a new and engaging hero in her first novel for middle grade readers set against a richly textured background of contemporary Nigeria.

This is a great MG story. A young boy is struggling with the death of his father. So he basically becomes the Hulk to sort out crime. Whatever. It's for kids.

#AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville thank you for sending this one!

Read this for #authoramonth and was not disappointed! Perfect for young readers who dream of being superheroes! When 12-year-old Nnamdi is actually gifted super powers (similar to The Hulk) he quickly learns its not so easy and clearcut to know what to do with them as he seeks to avenge his father's death. The story is set in Nigeria and I enjoyed the African voice in the audiobook. @soubhiville

Soubhiville Sounds like a good one. 🙂 1y

MG is my favorite type of young people literature. I enjoyed Okorafor‘s story about a son who has lost his dad. #AuthorAMonth

Nnamdi‘s father, the chief of police in their Nigerian town, was murdered. He comes back as a ghost and gives his son the Ikenga, which allows him to double in size when angry. He starts avenging attacks in the city while looking for his father‘s murderer, but he must learn to control his anger and lean on friends, too.

Megabooks Thanks for sending this in my prize pack @Soubhiville !! 1y

What a wonderful surprise! I never expected 3 books so perfect for me! Thank you so much Soubhi @Soubhiville . I‘m still planning to read either The Game of Silence or The Round House by Louise Erdrich even if it‘s in February, then The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. #AuthorAMonth

Soubhiville You‘re welcome! I hope you‘ll enjoy them. I love Evelyn Hugo! 2y

Possibly the last book I will finish this year (I‘m holding hope for one more). It was not my favorite of Okorafor‘s books, but I can think of several kids in this age group that I would recommend it to. Finished it up while doing some audio baking (eggnog cake with bourbon custard and Italian meringue buttercream).

A mystical Fahrenheit 451: set in modern-day Tombouctou, Mali, but connected to the distant past through literature and mysticism. A brutal story of the ever-present war between radicalized religious sects and common followers; between the preservation of knowledge and power grabs in desolate places of those who would squelch such knowledge. I love the Black Stars series. There hasn‘t been a story that has not moved me so far. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Okorafor‘s MG debut is a powerful story about family, grief, responsibility & friendship. A year after the murder of his father, who was the chief of police, Nnamdi has a strange encounter during which he is gifted with a magical object which gives him superpowers. If he can learn how to control his new powers, he might be able to continue his father‘s fight against crime &, more importantly, figure out who killed his father. A good read.

Loved this one! Nnamdi, a 12 year old boy, gets a gift from the ghost of his father. The Ikenga changes him into “The Man”- a hulk like crime fighter. Nnamdi must learn to control while finding out who the true villains are. Beautifully told story about living with pain and grief.

4/5

Nnamdi is a 12 year old boy who is granted power, not unlike those of the superheros he reads about in comics, by an Ikenga. Nnamdi knows that this power will allow him to avenge his father's murder and save his beloved town from corruption. He must learn that rage and strength aren't enough to fix the injustice in the world.

This was a really interesting fantasy book that had a very endearing main character. The author really creates a world for the reader to explore that is different and unique. A little hard to follow at times, but definitely an original idea!

Nnamdi's father, the chief of police, has been murdered and his killer has not been discovered or convicted. Nnamdi is consumed with grief, anger and helplessness. One year later, he is approached by the ghost of his father and given a figurine called an Ikenga, which allows Nnamdi to become like a superhero. He thwarts local criminals and tries to solve the mystery of his father's murder. The story is well paced with lots of action and suspense.

Just received this ARC in the mail yesterday! I won it months ago but the shipping was delayed because of the pandemic and I actually forgot all about it so it was a fun surprise! 😀💕📚 It's a middle grade novel about a boy who is granted powers he has to learn to control. It looks fantastic and I love Nnedi Okorafor's Akata Witch series so I'm sure this will be equally amazing! 😁 #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #chaplin
