The bestselling novel that became an Oscar-winning film starring Elizabeth Taylor about New York's speakeasy generation A masterpiece of American fiction and a bestseller upon its publication in 1935, BUtterfield 8 lays bare with brash honesty the unspoken and often shocking truths that lurked beneath the surface of a society still reeling from the effects of the Great Depression. One Sunday morning, Gloria wakes up in a stranger's apartment with nothing but a torn evening dress, stockings, and panties. When she steals a fur coat from the wardrobe to wear home, she unleashes a series of events that can only end in tragedy. Inspired by true events, this novel caused a sensation on its publication for its frank depiction of the relationship between a wild and beautiful young woman and a respectable, married man. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I‘m reading this book because being confined to home made me peruse my bookshelves for exciting adventure. It took me a chapter to get into the swing of O Hara‘s style - mainly keeping the speaker straight 😃- but I ultimately I fell into the conversational pattern. I like the picture the book provides of the Great Depression and post era and find it synchronous to what‘s happening to the current economy in our country, not to mention the world.

SW-T A belated welcome to Litsy! 🥳 4y
Lunaglassart Thanks. I am enjoying being with book lovers. 😃 4y

“When I‘m tempted buy a dress because I think it‘s going to be handy, I think twice about it. Those handy dresses, so-called, I should say a woman won‘t get as much out of one of those as she will out of a really frivolous dress.”

This novel by John O‘Hara is supposedly based on the #truecrime case of Starr Faithfull, who was found washed-up in a beach with suspicious bruising. I believe Elizabeth Taylor was in the movie adaption. I read this many years ago but don‘t remember much; picked up this newer copy still TBR. #maylovesclassics

arubabookwoman I read this last year. I had a vague memory of seeing the movie with Elizabeth Taylor years ago when I was much too young to understand what was going on. The book was good. You don‘t find many of O‘Hara‘s books around anymore, and I think he is a bit neglected. I would like to read more by him. 6y
LeahBergen I‘ve been meaning to read this for years. 6y
ValerieAndBooks @arubabookwoman I‘ll have to try and watch the movie...but not until I do the re-read. I think I have another one of his sitting in my TBR, need to check!! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen it is not long, but I know #somanybookssolittletime 😊!! 6y

Morning reading 'n coffee on the patio, Fall Edition.

rubyslippersreads Great cover! 7y
TrishB What @rubyslippersreads said ☝ I'm in love with that cover. 7y
AlaMich @rubyslippersreads @TrishB Yes, it's the first book I've read from the #penguindropcaps collection my wife gave me for my birthday ❤️. It's hard because I have to always be conscious of whether my hands are clean, where I set the book down etc. Don't want to get it dirty. 7y

AlaMich @TrishB @rubyslippersreads All the covers are designed to relate somehow to the book. I think this cover represents the fact that the book is set in 1930 in NY (Prohibition), so there were speakeasies everywhere, and they would only let you in if they knew you. So it's the bouncer looking at her through the peephole in the door. I think. 😊 7y
rubyslippersreads @AlaMich @TrishB I also think it looks a bit like Elizabeth Taylor, who was in the movie. 😉 7y
AlaMich @rubyslippersreads Yes, I plan to see it when I'm finished. She was a bit old for this role, I now realize. 7y
TrishB I know what you mean about taking care with special books 😀 this is lovely! 7y

Me (in white), cousins, and aunt on beach in Glen Arbor. *sigh*

1. Traverse City/Glen Arbor, Michigan. So beautiful!! 🍒🍒🍒
2. Pasta of some variety
3. Back to Australia/New Zealand
4. Listening to The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, about to start Butterfield 8.
5. I like all three for different reasons. Especially partial to mass market PBs for some strange reason.

#humpdaypost

Yeah_I_Read I love mass market pb's I wish more books were in that format. They are easy to carry around and generally not awkward or heavy... even the big ones! 7y
AlaMich @Yeah_I_Read Yes! And there's just something about the way they feel to hold...??‍♀️ Now I sound weird. Also, since almost all the books I read as an adolescent/teenager/"new adult" were PBs, so I guess there's that familiarity. 7y
Yeah_I_Read @AlaMich not weird at all! I totally get it. And I remember a time when most paperbacks were of the mass market variety 7y

#numberintitle #septemberphotochallenge #somethingforsept Late last night BUtterfield 8 was my immediate choice. One the same shelf were the other two bc it's a book-to-film area of my books. Note original title of Three Days... Was Six Days of the Condor. Not sure why they changed it for the movie.

quirkyreader Love those classic covers. 🐸🐙 8y
ApoptyGina69 @quirkyreader thanks! I really like them too and I have lots. Comes from scouring those used book stores everywhere I go! 8y
