The Achievement Habit
The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing, and Take Command of Your Life | Bernard Roth
7 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
The co-founder of the Stanford d.School introduces the power of design thinking to help you achieve goals you never thought possible. Achievement can be learned. Its a muscle, and once you learn how to flex it, youll be able to meet lifes challenges and fulfill your goals, Bernard Roth, Academic Director at the Stanford d.school contends. In The Achievement Habit, Roth applies the remarkable insights that stem from design thinkingpreviously used to solve large scale projectsto help us realize the power for positive change we all have within us. Roth leads us through a series of discussions, stories, recommendations, and exercises designed to help us create a different experience in our lives. He shares invaluable insights we can use to gain confidence to do what weve always wanted and overcome obstacles that hamper us from reaching our potential, including: Dont tryDO; Excuses are self-defeating; Believe you are a doer and achiever and youll become one; Build resiliency by reinforcing what you do rather than what you accomplish; Learn to ignore distractions that prevent you from achieving your goals; Become open to learning from your own experience and from those around you; And more. The brain is complex and is always working with our egos to sabotage our best intentions. But we can be mindful; we can create habits that make our lives better. Thoughtful and powerful The Achievement Habit shows you how.

Pretty happy with my progress since I just started this morning.

The tagged book by Roth is very good. He uses design thinking as a foundation for his approach. It‘s rather simplistic on the self-help front. On the intro-to-design-thinking front, it‘s very enlightening And super interesting. #readathon #designthinking

melbeautyandbooks Am I the only one who thinks it's funny that you DNF the book about achievement? 😂 8y
Smrloomis @melbeautyandbooks I'm a proud book quitter 👍🏽 life's too short! 😬 8y
melbeautyandbooks @Smrloomis- I agree with you. There are so many good books to read, there's no need to waste your time on the bad ones. 😊 8y

"If you are depressed, do not get depressed at the idea of being depressed. Get off on it. Admire the fact that you are having this amazing depression." I'm sure Roth doesn't mean clinical depression, but this passage made me realize that I'm going to have to bail on this one. Ugh.

LeahBergen Oh, hell no. 🙄 8y
arlenefinnigan Embrace your misery! Worked for Sylvia Plath! 8y
Cinfhen Honestly, my 15 year old writes better than that! And he probably offers deeper thoughts as well! 8y

DGRachel W.T.F? 8y
Chelsey Um. 🤔🙄 8y
Smrloomis @Cinfhen yup, I believe it. This guy teaches at Stanford too. 🤔 8y
TheLazyReader It is obvious that the author has never experienced depression.😧😞 8y
Smrloomis @LeahBergen @arlenefinnigan @DGRachel @Chelsey I think he needed a good editor to step in and say hey this makes you sound completely flippant about this 😕 (edited) 8y
Smrloomis @TheLazyReader yeah, he should have just edited that bit out. 8y
Mimi28 I would not want to have this guy as a teacher. 8y
Smrloomis @Mimi28 yeah, I actually agree with some of his ideas - reframing thoughts can helpful sometimes - but he just takes it too far. 8y
Cinfhen Stanford? He must have tenure! 8y
Smrloomis @Cinfhen yup, he's been there for decades. 8y
kspenmoll Just from that quote, bailing seems your only option! 8y
LitHousewife WTF? Sounds like someone who has never really had to deal with depression. 8y
mischa I have bipolar 2 and this reminds me of the idiots who tell me they'd "love" to be manic. No. Just no. Mania sucks and the depression after it is even worse. People who say stuff like this have never experienced the severe impact it has on your life. (I am having many feelings. Sorry!) (edited) 8y
I-read-and-eat What exactly should you be excited about? Dealing with anxiety and depression because of this never made me feel excited. It doesn't hurt to have a more positive look on thing but loving it goed way to far. I like that it made me think about what actually makes me happy but I would have loved to figure that out without the panic attacks. 8y
Stephykitten So glad I came across this post. I'm in the midst of a terrible anxiety/depression life-void thing and feel like the world is judging me for it, but this thread helped me feel a little safer today. thanks everyone 😊 Litsy is wonderful @I-read-and-eat @mischa @LitHousewife @Smrloomis @TheLazyReader et al 8y
Smrloomis @kspenmoll @LitHousewife 👍🏽 @mischa feel free to vent 😁 8y
Smrloomis @I-read-and-eat amen. @Stephykitten glad it was helpful to someone! 8y
Smrloomis @Stephykitten also hope you find the right people/place to talk about how you're doing. Some people just won't get it, but supportive, understanding people are out there. They just might not be the first people you encounter...so i guess my point is to keep looking! 8y
I-read-and-eat @Stephykitten Good to know that Litsy helps. I found my way to Litsy mid - anxiety and it helped a great deal for me. 8y
mischa @Stephykitten 💜💜 8y
Stephykitten Thanks everyone! 😽 8y

Just started this. Not sure if I'm going to finish it or not... so far, it's just ok.

Smrloomis @Lacythebookworm I did although I remember it being so-so for me. I also read Duhigg and liked that much more. Other suggestions about books on habits are definitely welcome! I need some inspiration for 2017 😬 8y
