This absolutely falling apart copy of The Joy of Cooking is filled with notes in my grandmother‘s handwriting. I think the real magic of #Cooking is its ability to connect you to family who are no longer here, or who are far away, so I love seeing those notes every time I use this! #NovemberNarrative

IndoorDame This actually arrived one day when I was at college in a box with no note along with a Japanese tea set. My folks weren‘t care package people so I didn‘t immediately think of them, but it was the notes in Mormor‘s handwriting that made me remember my mom had said she was going to be cleaning out her folks‘ house. Mystery solved! 3y

mandarchy That's amazing it still has the dust cover! Have you checked to see if it had a recipe for whale? I have my mom's copy, and it's from 1964. 3y

IndoorDame @mandarchy I don‘t see anything about whale 🐳. It looks to me like the 75 edition. She must have gotten it around the time her youngest child left home. 3y

IndoorDame @SamAnne Same! like 90% of my cookbooks belonged to my mom. I‘m always tempted to buy new ones for myself, but I know that when I‘m looking for new recipes it‘s pretty likely I‘m going to search the internet and that really I keep the cookbooks mostly for the memories 3y

mandarchy I almost never use this book because it's hard to follow. My go-to cookbook is the Fannie Farmer. I have one from the early '80s, which is just before Americans started eating peppers, which I'm allergic to. 3y

IndoorDame @mandarchy I actually do use it cause my mom also had a copy when I was growing up so for general stuff it‘s the reference I‘m used to. Though it‘s not where I‘d go to look for new inspiration and as time goes on I‘m less and less likely to use paper references to find out the cook times and temperatures for things when I could just ask google 3y

IndoorDame @Eggs I love that cookbooks do that! I have a personal cookbook that started as a notebook with recipes that friends from my mom‘s generation taught me so every time I look through it it‘s like I‘m in a dozen different kitchens 3y

SamAnne And it is a hilarious read. The directions for beating the perfect egg whites? Erma didn't just have eggs on her mind. And the “cocktails for a crowd“ section...so alcoholic and the intro notes! One recipe begins with: “This one will make a man see double and feel single.“ The deadly eggnog for a crowd recipe recommends following Mark Twain's advice: “too much of anything is bad but too much whiskey is just enough.“ 😂😂😳 (edited) 3y
