The Hollow Ones
The Hollow Ones | Guillermo Del Toro, Chuck Hogan
22 posts | 23 read | 19 to read
A horrific crime that defies explanation, a rookie FBI agent in uncharted territory, and an extraordinary hero for the ages: an investigation spirals out of control in this heart-pounding thriller. Odessa Hardwicke's life is derailed when she's forced to turn her gun on her partner, Walt Leppo, a decorated FBI agent who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer. The shooting, justified by self-defense, shakes the young FBI agent to her core. Devastated, Odessa is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what most troubles Odessa isn't the tragedy itself -- it's the shadowy presence she thought she saw fleeing the deceased agent's body after his death. Questioning her future with the FBI and her sanity, Hardwicke accepts a low-level assignment to clear out the belongings of a retired agent in the New York office. What she finds there will put her on the trail of a mysterious figure named Hugo Blackwood, a man of enormous means who claims to have been alive for centuries, and who is either an unhinged lunatic, or humanity's best and only defense against unspeakable evil. From the authors who brought you The Strain Trilogy comes a strange, terrifying, and darkly wondrous world of suspense, mystery, and literary horror. The Hollow Ones is a chilling, spell-binding tale, a hauntingly original new fable from Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro and bestselling author Chuck Hogan featuring their most fascinating character yet.

I enjoyed the concept and delivery - a man from the 1500s must capture the hollow ones (evil that inhabits humans as hosts to create chaos/death) - and two FBI agents help along the way (one in the 1960s and one present day) -
#JubilantJuly hours read about 15/20

Another #BookSpinBingo book (and vacation was so packed with activity with family that it was worth not getting in many reading hours).
Make a great day everyone 🌞

Probably got another 5 hours in, maybe 11 so far! The family time is too much fun, programs good here (Chautauqua institution) and I'm exhausted, so reading is limited!

Thanks for the tag @eeclayton -

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1. Lonesome Dove made me cry at several different points -
2. I enjoy horror (more on the supernatural side) /thrillers/murder mysteries - I like being scared and creeped out by a book, I like figuring out who did it -
3. Two of the creepiest books - The Shining and It (both by Stephen King)

Want to play @TheSpineView and @MerlinTheSlightlyAwkward ?

Make a great day everyone - 🙂

This was a quick and guilty read that could be boiled down to several cliches and used tropes in the mystery/horror genre. Predictable or not, I‘ll probably still be scrounging library aisles for the sequel.

This was just okay. Not sure how some of the horror nominees were chosen this year for The Goodreads Choice Awards, because this definitely would not have been a nominee of mine. #WinterGames2020 #readnosedreindeer #littenlisten #festiveflicks #bookspinbingo #bookishbingo #crushtherush #readyourway #itscoldoutside @StayCurious @TheAromaofBooks @MidnightBookGirl @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheSpineView @Bookgoil

TheAromaofBooks I don't read horror myself, but I've been hearing a lot of complaints about the books chosen for that category!! 4y
TheSpineView 👍🎄🤩📖 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I wonder if there was a lack of good horror titles. 4y

This was originally supposed to be a Scarathlon book but came too late to be included. I enjoyed this horror novel about an FBI agent who after having to shoot her partner after a crime scene goes wrong sees an escaping spirit leave his body, and the Englishman who has spent almost 5 centuries tracking them down & imprisoning them. If you enjoyed The Strain, you‘ll like this one, can‘t wait for the next in the series.

BookwormM Is this a film as I feel like I have seen it 🤣🤣 4y

“There are things that exist beyond the rule of law.” This isn‘t a genre I read much. I can see the references to Pendergast & X-Files although I have limited familiarity. This was so-so because much of the occult & paranormal remained unclear & the ending was weak. I was interested enough that I can see myself reading the next installment.

First off, I have to mention that I really enjoyed The Strain trilogy by these two authors, so I was super excited when I finally got my hands on this book.

The Hollow Ones started off with a bang, then kinda lost it in the middle, but then the end was great. I'm intrigued to see where the next addition in the series will go now. Odessa also makes a great MC.

How am I supposed to believe that anyone who makes tea like that can pass the FBI entrance exams??? I use tea bags, but I don‘t put them in the microwave. And it definitely takes longer than 30 seconds to get water hot enough to brew tea. Has anyone ever made tea like this? Is that a thing?

LitStephanie My mom always used tea bags in the microwave, but it definitely takes more than 30 seconds, and then you have to let it steep awhile. 4y
ChemistKat @LitStephanie I knew a guy who would start drinking it as soon as the water came out of the microwave and I put the tea bag in. I told him it should steep, but he didn‘t care. I wanted to just give him hot water and stop wasting my tea lol. (edited) 4y
LitStephanie @ChemistKat, yes, that would just be hot water! 4y

A surprisingly good read. If you like your thrillers with a side of Slade House, a dash of The Library at Mount Char, & a little bit of Guillermo del Toro‘s fantastical imagination, then this is definitely the book for you. I definitely got the vibe of those other two books (& that‘s good) as I read this story about a young FBI agent dealing with a horrific crime, it‘s aftermath, & an old evil. A fast read. I‘ll definitely read the sequel.

Mixing it up with my next book. This one has been out since June but I haven‘t heard a lot about it. When a young FBI agent‘s partner goes on a violent rampage & she is forced to stop him using extreme force, she must find a way to live with the consequences. She must unravel the mystery of what she saw that night, the shadowy presence that was in the room with them. Certainly sounds intriguing.

🎧 I loved the story. The narration rubbed me the wrong way. Stilted speech, mispronounced words. I don‘t know why it bothered me at all.

The story was a fun take on RAGE violence & this is only my opinion but I got a feel That there was a comparison to Pendergast & a couple other books. Not that it‘s unoriginal but like in homage. I liked the 3 time lines. Looks like there will be another book. 😁⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

New release from Guillermo del Toro, author of The Strain and director of Pan's Labyrinth. It was creepy but not necessarily horror. It's more of a ghost story involving the FBI and the supernatural. It's much like an X-File except the female lead is definitely no Dana Scully. The narration by Brittany Pressley was well done. 3 stars.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #HatchetteAudio for the audiobook. #TheHollowOnesAudio

Another stellar pairing of Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, who brought us The Strain Trilogy. This book is in the same genre as their previous books, thriller mixed in with Sci-Fi.

I‘m a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro- I love his films-& I had a lot of fun reading his previous vampire series. Needless to say, I was ecstatic to get an #AudioARC from #NetGalley. And it‘s well-performed (though that tinniness from the app is here too), but not really quite as original as I hoped. Blackwood reminds me a lot of Preston & Child‘s Pendergast and the villain is like that movie Fallen... still I‘ll continue on! #AudioColoring

BookwormM I love Pan‘s Labyrinth will have to check this out 4y
