Goodwood | Holly Throsby

It wasn't just one person who went missing, it was two people. Two very different people. They were there, and then they were gone, as if from a crack in the sky. After that, in a small town like Goodwood, where we had what Nan called 'a high density of acquaintanceship', everything stopped. Or at least it felt that way. The normal feeling of things stopped. Goodwood is a small town where everyone knows everything about everyone. It's a place where it's impossible to keep a secret. In 1992, when Jean Brown is seventeen, a terrible thing happens. Two terrible things. Rosie White, the coolest girl in town, vanishes overnight. One week later, Goodwood's most popular resident, Bart McDonald, sets off on a fishing trip and never comes home. People die in Goodwood, of course, but never like this. They don't just disappear. As the intensity of speculation about the fates of Rosie and Bart heightens, Jean, who is keeping secrets of her own, and the rest of Goodwood are left reeling. Rich in character and complexity, its humour both droll and tender, Goodwood is a compelling ride into a small community, torn apart by dark rumours and mystery.

Not a successful novel in my opinion. I don't think the author could make up her mind whether she was writing a mystery, a country town slice of life or a sexual awakening story. I didn't like the switches from first person to third person narrative and the solution to the mystery involved too much secret keeping for insufficient reason, but my main problem with it was that it was all very dull. #ozfiction

Tamra Dull, that is a certain death. 😐 5y

Set in a small country, life is quiet until two residents go missing within the space of a week. How the town copes and mystery unfolds is told from the point of view of seventeen year old Jean. I quite liked the story and way it was told, though there was a bit of teenage angst.

I did enjoy this book but not as much as her second novel, which I‘m hoping means her books just keep getting better! I liked her portrayal of a small country town and the mystery kept me hooked but I just didn‘t love it. I don‘t regret reading it though and will definitely read more of her books....when she writes them 😀

I recently read Holly Throsby‘s second novel ‘Cedar Valley‘ which I really enjoyed. It prompted me to reserve this, her first novel, from the library. The setting is a country town not far from town in the second novel and some of the characters overlap which is great.

MrsMalaprop I liked this one. Haven‘t read her latest. 6y
Eva_B The latest is definitely worth a read @MrsMalaprop. I hope she plans on writing a third! 6y

A quirky small town Australian mystery made all the more interesting by the voice of 17 year old Jean as she narrates the puzzling and distressing events from Goodwood in the 1992. I also appreciated the flashbacks in my own small town Australian childhood.

Fernoppy I really enjoyed this one too. Didn't pick the ending either. 7y
Joanne1 @Fernoppy don't know why it took me so long to get to it. I did pick part of the ending, but not all and I still enjoyed it. 7y
Jeg Loved this. I don‘t normally keep books anymore but I have this one. I will read it again one day. Loved the descriptions. So very Australian . 7y

My secret power is the ability to read in the car. This comes in handy during the seven hour drive home from our beach holiday. This is another #aussieauthor and one I should have got to sooner. I'm hooked, even reading while stopped at a park for lunch.

KathyWheeler I can read in the car too; it comes in really handy. 7y
CarolynM Keep meaning to get around to this one. Thanks for the encouragement! 7y

What happens when tragedy strikes an Australian country town. Develops at the pace of life in a small town but kept me gripped right the way through.

I can't say I loved this - I had trouble remembering who all the characters were, and, along with the switching POV and perspective, I found this a bit distracting and just wasn't engaged. I do think some people will love it though.

Finished this today, just in time for the #Aprilbookshowers #ruralsetting prompt.

I really enjoyed it. It was a light book about some dark subject matter (if that makes sense). Very Aussie and I wonder how Littens from other parts of the world might find it?

This is going to (unexpectedly) be one of my favourite books of the year.

It's quiet, ostensibly taking place around twin mysteries, but ultimately it is just about small town living and coming-of-age.

At times, the prose was absolutely beautiful and I found myself laying awake thinking about it, then having to get up and just finish it. Hence a review at 2:50am Brisbane time. 😝

Goodwood is like any small Australian town, I felt at home there while reading about it. Holly Throsby has a particular talent for language and her turn of phrase is compelling. I found myself sharing quotes on social media and re-reading passages because they were so well written. A thumbs up from me 👍

'Chaotic' is how I would describe this book.

It's like we are seeing events unfold through Evie's eyes but she doesn't feel like the protagonist, just narrator. The stronger chapters were those with Mack and Davo or Judy and Mrs Bart because I could feel the emotional trauma caused by the missing people.

It flips between characters and between tenses but there were no strong individual voices between the characters.
