Keep You Close | Karen Cleveland

Rating: 2.5/5 Stars
I loved Need to Know. Keep Your Close had some ties to Need to Know, but I felt like it was so easy to guess things going on due to it having the same structure of Need to Know, but with different characters and a slight different outcome. It had good moments, but for me I couldn‘t wait for it to end-not in a good way.

Not for me. 😒 Soooooo boring. I should have bailed 🗑. Was hoping the end would be rewarding 🤦🏻‍♀️. Don‘t think I will follow this author. #bail #pan #belindabauer #darkside #boring #wasteoftime #canteven #notforme

This book held a lot of promise, but everything felt rushed: the situation the characters were in and their growing attraction. This book could have delved so much deeper into the characters and their emotions. It all ended up feeling skin deep. I feel let down in a sense and so I'm giving this one a pan.

Sooooo I‘ve been trying to like this and read it before watching the Netflix series. I‘m not really feeling it. The back and forth between the tapes and the listener (see I forgot his name, totally not invested) is off-putting and confusing. I suppose I‘ll watch The Closer instead.

britt_brooke It was a #pan for me. I didn‘t watch the show, but I‘ve heard it‘s better than the book. 1y
CaliforniaCay The show is definitely better. Devastating and uncomfortable to watch but better than the book for sure. 1y
MelissaSue81 One of the rare instances where the show is better! For sure. 1y

I struggled with connecting with the characters and found this boring. Nothing was surprising and was confusing at times.

Jules7 Ugh....I got this as an ARC, and since I didn‘t like the cover it went to the bottom of the pile. Good call Jules, good call. Thanks for the review! 2y
The_Heeler_Booklife @Jules7 I had the arc from Netgalley, but I thought audiobook would be faster to me. When I looked through the audiobook I noticed all the conversations do not have quotes around them. 😬 2y

The Catcher in the Rye | J. D. Salinger

Wish I could have called Salinger and asked him what the point of his book was! I just didn't get it.
I found Holden annoying, fickle, contradictory and full of himself - like a typical teenager really. But the story itself seemed quite pointless.
I can imagine that if I'd read this as a teenager myself, I would have been raving about it but that ship sailed twenty-odd years ago!
Not a good read at all.

julesG Wow, am I glad you wrote this. It mirrors my opinion of the book, probably for similar reasons. I did not read it in my teens, but late twenties and never understood what all the fuss was about. 2y
Victoria_Clyne Oh me too. I've read a number of 'classics' and not been able to figure out why they are a 'classic'. I feel like I've missed something. I have experienced the same thing with movies m. 2y
ShookBelf @Victoria_Clyne That's how I felt: like I was missing something. I can understand how controversial it was when it was first published but time has done it no favours. The whole point of the book (if there even is one) is lost in modern day. 2y
Songbird72 I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about certain classics. 2y

TommieMarie74 It was the same for me. 2y
hanseatic @TommieMarie74 I am so happy to hear that I am not alone with this opinion, the majority seems to have liked it. 2y
TommieMarie74 @hanseatic I know, and I just don‘t get it. I felt like the story was really bland and everyone was just so unlikeable and underdeveloped. I‘m glad I‘m no longer alone. 😊 2y

I still haven‘t mastered a photo collage, so I‘ll do #pickpanbailsoso the boring way.
Lots of #picks this year, and this one was my absolute favorite.
Some books were between picks and #soso but my least favorite was My Father‘s Tears.
I didn‘t #pan any books, mostly because I‘m likely to #bail first, which I did with Love Warrior.
#giveaway
Now I‘m off to play tourist in my own city with the sibs!

Cinfhen Thanks for playing along! Enjoy family time 😊I use the free app pic collage to make my graphics...(in case you want to give it a try❣️) 2y
DivineDiana Loved this book! 2y
Susanita @Cinfhen I‘ll check that out. Thanks! 2y

This is going to be a #unpopularopinion but I just couldn‘t get behind this book. I‘m sure there are lots of wonderful literary devices in it, but I just couldn‘t wait for it to be over. (See spoilers.) Too bad because I had really high hopes.

Megabooks I‘m definitely with @britt_brooke and @Reviewsbylola that there was just too much puking. Perhaps it is a weird literary device. And the damn ghosts. I just got so tired of people whining about ghosts and seeing ghosts. Blah. (edited) 2y
Megabooks #BOTM #BOTMchallenge 43/50 👍🏻 2y
shawnmooney I have heard such polarized opinions about this one but the criticisms that keep surfacing are about exactly my pet peeves so I will give this one a pass. Plus I bailed on her earlier novel 2y

Megabooks @shawnmooney Yeah, from your prior reviews, I can‘t see you liking this one. I definitely don‘t recommend it. 2y
britt_brooke @shawnmooney You'd totally bail on this one (I think), so good plan skipping it altogether. I wish I had. #pan 2y
Valeka Eek, it's in my TBR stack on my end table. I will still give it a shot but I'm hesitant now! 2y
Tamra Thanks for the heads-up! 2y
L_auren Yeah I‘ve been trying to get into this one and it‘s been rough. Could this be our first universally disliked book for the challenge since love Interest? 2y
merelybookish Haha I just started this today. 🤔 2y
Reviewsbylola Such a letdown!! I'm surprised I haven't seen more negative reviews. 2y
emilyhaldi Wow such a surprise that this is our first universal BOTM dislike, team!! I never would have predicted it. And I agree with everything you guys have said- I couldn‘t WAIT for this one to be over. @L_auren @Booksandcooks @Reviewsbylola 2y
Reviewsbylola I have to wonder if part of the popularity is due to the author being pretty well known. Would it have such a high rating if it were a new author? @emilyhaldi @britt_brooke @Booksandcooks @L_auren 2y
Reviewsbylola And I agree @emilyhaldi I had no doubt this would be a solid pick. Just goes to show how BOTM can surprise you. 2y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I think you're on to something. I think some people automatically swoon over super hyped books. I just don't get it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Some folks really gushed over it and I thought it was a big ol' mess. 2y
Megabooks @Valeka Just make sure your stomach is strong! 2y
Megabooks @Tamra NP 👍🏻 2y
Megabooks @merelybookish I hope you like it more! 2y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola @britt_brooke Yeah, I don‘t think this would fly from a new author. And Stephanie, I agree. I was sure I was going to like it, but I could hardly find anything good to say about it. The font was very legible and easy-to-read. There. That was good. 2y
Megabooks @L_auren @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi Universal pan dance party time!! 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 I cant believe we all agree. And I‘m liking Lies She Told better on audio. Universal pick and pan in the same month 😮😮😮😮 2y
britt_brooke @Booksandcooks 😆👏🏻 And the cover was pretty. @Reviewsbylola 2y
Reviewsbylola 😂😂 There's always a positive if you think hard enough. 2y
readinginthedark Oh no! This is the third negative review I've seen for this one, and I was just about to start it. Maybe I'll just pass... 2y
Megabooks @readinginthedark it has a 79% rating. A lot of people like it. It just isn‘t for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
readinginthedark Yeah, well the description had me on the fence, but some of the positive reviews had convinced me. Just not sure I'd make it through this one. 2y
