30 posts | 24 read | 22 to read
In 19th century Bombay, Captain Jim Agnihotri channels his idol, Sherlock Holmes, in Nev Marchs Minotaur Books/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Award-winning debut. In 1892, Bombay is the center of British India. Nearby, Captain Jim Agnihotri lies in Poona military hospital recovering from a skirmish on the wild northern frontier, with little to do but re-read the tales of his idol, Sherlock Holmes, and browse the daily papers. The case that catches Captain Jim's attention is being called the crime of the century: Two women fell from the busy universitys clock tower in broad daylight. Moved by Adi, the widower of one of the victims his certainty that his wife and sister did not commit suicide Captain Jim approaches the Parsee family and is hired to investigate what happened that terrible afternoon. But in a land of divided loyalties, asking questions is dangerous. Captain Jim's investigation disturbs the shadows that seem to follow the Framji family and triggers an ominous chain of events. And when lively Lady Diana Framji joins the hunt for her sisters attackers, Captain Jims heart isnt safe, either. Based on a true story, and set against the vibrant backdrop of colonial India, Nev March's Minotaur Books/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Award-winning lyrical debut, Murder in Old Bombay, brings this tumultuous historical age to life.

In 1892 Bombay, a recently medically discharged army Captain becomes interested in the mysterious death of two young women. He is inspired to investigate and is welcomed into the home of the grieving family. With a flair for disguise, Captain Jim methodically follows clues, uncovering more mysteries. With lots of characters, locations and plot twists the audio was at times confusing, but well done. 4/5 ⭐️ for a rousing debut novel.

First in a series. Set in later 19th century India a former military Captain is hired by a family to find out how their daughters really died was it murder? The story feels like it gets off track at times and there are added events that feel like they could have been cut out. The writing wasn‘t bad. The narrator got a little annoying at times. Mostly the story dragged at times.
3.5⭐️ somewhere between cozy mystery and suspense

This story based on true events flowed smoothly unrolling a mystery in colonial British India. While Captain Jim Agnihotri is recovering in a Poona military hospital in 1892, he spends time reading Sherlock Holmes novels to pass the time. When he comes across the suspicious deaths of two women in the paper, Jim goes into investigative mode. He becomes interested in solving the mystery of two young women falling from the university clock tower.

A bit romancy for me, but still enjoyable. An Anglo-Indian struggling to find a place in the society of Bombay.

While recovering from an injury Captain Jim Agnihotri comes across the story of two women who fell from a clock tower in the middle of the day. Convinced it was murder, he investigates & uncovers terrible secrets. The mystery at the center of this debut (which very much reads like one) is less interesting than the setting, 1892 Bombay, but in the end, enough to keep you turning the pages. Fascinating setting, some interesting characters, ok read.

This debout murder mystery, set in British India, is a study in 1892 colonial & indigenous politics, history & culture.Cap. Jim Agnihotri, who as a “half breed”,treads both both worlds,at is home in neither.
As he recuperates from military injuries,he reads Sherlock Holmes & newspapers. After discharge,he applies Sherlock‘s techniques in solving the infamous mystery of why/now two women, from a prominent family, fell from a University Bell Tower.

In this murder mystery set in India during the Raj, a biracial ex-soldier investigates the deaths of two women who fell from a high tower. It's twists and turns kept me turning pages through this chunky yet cozy mystery. The main character is inspired by Sherlock Holmes which makes the entire book that much more entertaining. Fun!!!

I enjoy historical mysteries set in India and this was a very good addition to that sub genre. Many I‘ve read have protagonists connected to the East India Company but this one takes place decades later which informed the mystery in an interesting way. Also enjoyed our hero‘s admiration of Sherlock Holmes and his determination to solve his case by emulating the Holmes unemotional logic—which went out the window as soon as he fell in love! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@BookishMarginalia I‘m on page 265 and I‘m enjoying the drama. It‘s a ton of drama, but I am one that as a child I was promptly at 6pm on our couch ready to watch telenovelas with the adults. So I think that factors into why I enjoy the drama 😅. Those were also hard and complicated times in India, so I think the drama is understandable. I‘m enjoying the book.

I kept on seeing that the main character was addressed as Sahib and I was a bit confused. I even went back to check to where March mentioned his name in the beginning. I checked multiple times and kept on asking myself, why are they calling this man Sahib when his name is Jim?!? I kept on wondering and 30 pages in I thought that maybe it was used in place of “sir.” Well, it was burning a hole in my brain so I googled it... 👇🏽

TheBookAddict I guess you learn something new every day. The hole has stopped burning and has been filled. 😆 #YesiReads #mystery 4y
BookishMarginalia How are you liking the book? It was not what I expected (too much melodrama for my taste), but I'll pick up the next one when it's published. 4y
TheBookAddict @BookishMarginalia I‘m only 30 pages in, but I‘m liking it so far. I‘m a big Sherlock fan, so I‘m down for any Sherlock fanfic type stuff 😁. Right now I have a ton of questions, like: what happened in The Afghans Karachi? How was Pilloo for real? How did she really feel about the family and about her marriage? I usually enjoy all the back stories, I want to know it all!!! But I‘ll let you know how I feel about it when I read more of it. 🙂 4y

In 19th century Bombay, Capt. Jim Agnihotri tries to solve the murders of 2 young Parsee women who fell from a University tower. I enjoyed this mystery a lot. I found that while reading it it felt almost episodic as even though solving the girls murders was the primary premise there were several other mini-adventures that took place along the way all which forwarded the story & assisted with the investigation. This book would make a good TV show.

Way too melodramatic but still enjoyable — the setting is much more interesting than the first-person narrator. This is a debut novel, so I have high hopes the author‘s style evolves away from melodrama and rumination. (I don‘t think the audiobook narration helped — I rolled my eyes a bit as I listened.)

I wasn‘t sure what to expect from this one but it‘s a sort of historical cozy mystery #SetInIndia for those looking for that category in #Booked2020! Recovering from injuries, our narrator, James is half-Indian & half-British. Raised in an orphanage & then in the calvary, he now seeks to find a new purpose. The mysterious deaths of 2 young women that he reads about in the newspaper provides that. While it‘s not fast-paced, it is fascinating!

Today, this is my read.
Isn‘t the cover of Murder In Old Bombay amazing? It‘s so retro, so “who dunnit” vibe-ing of the great oldies. I‘m excited to start reading.

Coming to a bookstore near you, November 10, 2020!

Thank you Netgalley , Nev March, St. Martin‘s Press, & Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read this book in lieu of my honest review.

Probably more between a so-so and a pan, but TBH there was really nothing I liked about this book (besides the cover). 🙁 It seemed to go on forever (much, much too long), the writing was disjointed without a good flow and the characters were not that interesting and one was downright unlikable. The mystery was OK but a bit far fetched and convoluted. Just not feeling it.
