The Witch Hunter
The Witch Hunter | Max Seeck
20 posts | 15 read | 18 to read
A shocking murder in an affluent Helsinki suburb has ties to witchcraft and the occult in this thrilling U.S. debut from Finnish author Max Seeck. A bestselling authors wife has been found dead in a gorgeous black evening gown, sitting at the head of an empty dining table. Her most chilling featureher face is frozen in a ghastly smile. At first it seems as though a deranged psychopath is reenacting the gruesome murders from the Witch Hunt trilogy, bestsellers written by the victims husband. But investigator Jessica Niemi soon realizes shes not looking for a single killer but rather for dozens of believers in a sinister form of witchcraft who know her every move and are always one step ahead. As the bodies start piling up, Jessica knows they wont stop until they get what they want. And when her dark past comes to light, Jessica finds herself battling her own demons while desperately trying to catch a coven of killers before they claim their next victim.

The local police have their hands full when a famous author‘s wife is found dead in what appears to be a ritual murder. Multiple murders later, it seems they are linked…someone is looking for and killing witches. But oddly they seem to have a role in their own murders. So for most of the book, the police are following this very logical conclusion…until it goes off the rails in an almost completely different t direction. Sadly this feels like 2 ⬇️

Texreader plots smushed together. The resolution seems to try to continue with the witchcraft theory while playing another context. Confused? Yea, me too. Meanwhile, there is a side story taking place some time ago in Venice and the primary detective. I‘m puzzled while she‘s concerned a hot-shot detective when the other cops almost always have to snap her out of some daydream. Before before the book goes off the rails, it‘s a complex and well-written ⬇️ 3d
Texreader mystery and for that it‘s a pick, barely. I think the author tries to do too much with this first in a series and he really didn‘t know how to conclude the book & took off on a tangent to solve the murders. (edited) 3d
LiseWorks I totally agree, I was a little confused too! 3d

First in a translated series. A Nordic procedural featuring a young detective with a complicated traumatic past. A series of murders and an investigation that uncovers a frightening conspiracy. The twisty twisted plot was less satisfying than the revelations and relationships of the MC, but the short chapters and narration increased the tension and propelled the story. A 3.5 ⭐️ pick. The sequel will go on my TBR list.

Finished the first book after reading the second book first. Opps! A lot about the second book is easier to understand now. I enjoyed this book but wished they had gotten to the ending a bit sooner so there was more time to go into the details. I felt like the book was filled with too much “fluff” and could have gotten to the good stuff a lot faster or into greater detail. On to the third book now.

For me, meh. Overall entertaining, but you‘ll have to suspend some disbelief to completely enjoy. I will continue the series due to my curiosity, and my insatiable need for closure. Beware, there are some violent & disturbing scenes.
3.5 out of 5 stars

Not quite Jo Nesbø but ultimately delivered everything I wanted from a Nordic Noir novel. The Witch Hunter is compelling, there‘s a lot going on (serial killer= many murders) and that was exactly what I needed in a book right now. Formatting edits might have made the shifting timelines clearer, but they worked to build some characterisation that was relevant to the narrative. I‘ll definitely be reading the follow-up.

Finnish Malleus Maleficarum witches on the loose.

Certainly creepy & with some genuinely scary parts, if a bit hard to follow storyline.

But yes, recommended. ‘Tis approaching the season, after all. 💀🎃👻

I really, really enjoyed this US debut by Max Seeck. A good combination of action and police procedural. I enjoyed the characters and especially, the female lead, Jessica. I believe this might be the first in a series, I look forward to the next one! 4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Apparently this one is supposed to be read by lots of Americans. It‘s on the B&N‘s thriller of the month list, and it‘ll soon be a TV series as well. Finland is so bad at getting books onto English language markets, so this is really cool! @EadieB

EadieB Interesting! I am so far behind in my reading. Probably won't get to read this until next year. I have about 10 NetGalley books to read. Our election is not over either so I've been focused on that. There is a lot of voter fraud to be exposed next week and our news media does not have the right to choose the president. Each state will finalize their pick in December. I know a lot of people don't like Trump but he is not out yet in this election. 4y
Tove_Reads @EadieB I‘m qualified to monitor elections, but wasn‘t monitoring this one. Based on what I‘ve heard from others and the reports I don‘t really understand these accusations regarding fraud. If there is something going on that the eye can not see and they can prove it, it will be so damaging to democracy in the US, and the US as a whole, that I don‘t wish that upon any country. 4y
EadieB @Tove_Reads The law suits will be filed tomorrow in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Wisconsin, Arizona and Nevada. The allegations include: Postal officials were told to date ballots that were received (11/4) the day after election (11/3) and backdate them to the 3rd. A postal worker has made a statement about this. Ballots showing up in the middle of the night putting Biden ahead and only voting for Biden and no other candidate on the ballot. (edited) 4y

EadieB @Tove_Reads Deceased people were registered and voted. Poll watchers were not allowed to get close enough to verify ballots. There were computer glitches that transferred 6,000 votes from Trump to Biden. The states with the problems are democratic and it was like they were following orders from someone running the whole scam. Stay turned as you will hear more about this on the news but the media is in on the fix so you need the right source. (edited) 4y
Tilly1 🤣😂 trump lost so get over it 4y
Crazeedi @Tove_Reads @EadieB @Tilly1 it's not over till electoral college votes. Lots of law suits to be resolved 4y
EadieB @Tilly1 Boy, can you be a little nicer? I see you just joined. Well, we are a lot nicer around her than where you came from! @Morgan_krahn @Elizabeth2 @DarkMina (edited) 4y
Crazeedi @EadieB I had already seen this!! 4y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Tilly1 it may not be over... we will just have to wait and see... 4y
Elizabeth2 @Tilly1 I‘m not sure people will just get over it, if they do not trust the election system in our country. There are definitely anomalies and irregularities that need to be investigated, so that we can all be sure we have free and fair elections going forward. I heard one newscaster say that we all know there is a certain amount of voter fraud that happens, it‘s just part of the process. 🤔😔 @EadieB (edited) 4y
Elizabeth2 This cover reminds me of the covers of the Patricia Gibney books you posted yesterday. Wonder if it‘s the same cover designer? @Tove_Reads (edited) 4y
EadieB @Elizabeth2 Well that‘s scary that voter fraud is part of the process. Thanks for commenting! 4y
DarkMina Fraud shouldn‘t be part of any election. We shouldn‘t allow it to stand when it happens either. @EadieB @Elizabeth2 4y
DarkMina This book looks like something I would like. I have discovered a few authors I like from the nordic countries. I will have to check this author out. (edited) 4y
Tove_Reads @DarkMina I just finished his Daniel Kuisma trilogy. Hopefully it‘ll get translated soon. Maybe that‘ll happen if this one sells well. 4y
DarkMina @Tove_Reads Are you Finnish? Yeah it is nice when they can be translated into other languages so more people have the opportunity to enjoy their books. 4y
Tove_Reads @DarkMina Yes I am. Sadly we only have a few people trying to sell Finnish books to other markets. Very few books out there for this reason. 4y
DarkMina Well hopefully if they see people are interested in some of the authors they have put out english editions for, they will be encouraged to do more. Definitely an untapped market I think. (edited) 4y
