This lyrical and stunning picture book tells a story about learning to love and celebrate your Asian-shaped eyes, in the of spirit of Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry. "This tale of self-acceptance and respect for ones roots is breathtaking. Kirkus (starred review) A young Asian girl notices that her eyes look different from her peers'. They have big, round eyes and long lashes. She realizes that her eyes are like her mothers, her grandmother's, and her little sister's. They have eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea, crinkle into crescent moons, and are filled with stories of the past and hope for the future. Drawing from the strength of these powerful women in her life, she recognizes her own beauty and discovers a path to self love and empowerment. This powerful, poetic picture book will resonate with readers of all ages and is a celebration of diversity.

Although I do not relate to this book. I have seen people get made fun of their cultures and effect them first hand. I do not think its ever okay to make fun of someone for their identity, but we need to be able to celebrate people.

This is a book about celebrating culture. When a little girl does not feel good about her aisian eyes she learns to appreciate them because she has “Eyes that kiss in the corner“

#JanuaryJazz Day 12: #NationalTeaDay reminded me of this book with lovely children being described as having “Eyes That Glow Like Warm Tea.” Instead of the usual expected derogatory remarks, this book offers an alternative way of perceiving by providing a description that is not only poetic, but also culturally apt. This book tells the story of a girl who has eyes that kiss in the corner. This brought to light how her family has the same eyes and how it should be celebrated. Throughout the story, the perspective is based on the little girl who talks about how their eyes tell the stories and how there is so much hope in them as well.

I love this book, because it feels like home every time I read it. Growing up, I got made fun of for having my Asian eyes so it is so nice to see a book that celebrates it.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to share it with the children that I work with. The main character has different eye shapes then her friends. She comes to realize that her eyes are the same as her moms, grandmas and sister. Their eyes hold stories from the past and future and that they are beautiful.

I love when the publisher provides activities to go with a book. I print them all and let the kids choose. The butterfly was a winner. I think they are tired. They just want to color. We read this #outloud last week and they are asking for more.

A great body positivity book, featuring diversity. The young character in this book notices how her eyes look different than her classmates, and yet her eyes are special. Her eyes resemble family members‘ eye shapes, and each remarkable woman can see remarkable things with their eyes. Letter E #PictureBook #BBRC

Another body-positivity book for young children of color. This one explores the premise that this narrator‘s eyes don‘t look like the girls‘ at school, but she does look just like her mother, and grandmother, and baby sister. And she seems to manage to find the beauty and strength in that all on her own (no adults or fairy godmothers needed here). #BBRC PB Letter E #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers @LibrarianRyan @StayCurious

Our Literacy class (EC-6 grade) has my daughter and I checking out more children‘s books, and this one was beautiful! Absolutely beautiful. My husband is half-Japanese, so our son is a quarter, and he (our son) has eyes that kiss in the corners. (My mother in law, who is Japanese, thought it was so cool that he has more of the “Japanese eyes” than my husband lol)

Bookzombie I loved this one too! 3y

A cute RF book that is just so sweet! Great book about diversity and confidence. 10/10 for sure. #UCFLAE3414SP21 I found a Great site that has activities for this book. I specifically like lyrical language activity! https://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2021/02/encourage-self-love-with-eyes-that... I think this activity would be used well with UDL 8.3 foster collaboration and community

ReaganT I also think this book is good for ESOL strategy 24 incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum 4y
DrSpalding Your summaries need to be a bit more detailed. What is the book actually about? Your universal design and English learner strategies work well. 4y

Eyes that Kiss in the Corners by Joanna Ho and illustrations by Dung Ho is a great story with a great storyline 🎈🌺 culturally diverse books are needed in classrooms so every student feels seen and heard🌼🌻 #UCFLAE3414SP21

ReaganT I love the title! And I agree, it‘s so important to represent cultural diversity in the classroom, this looks like a great read. 4y
Spearsall continued: UDL‘s 1.2 “offer alternatives for auditory information” can be applied here with an audio book while doing a read aloud with the class. This alternative is necessary for literacy as well. ESOL strategies include: link lesson topic to students prior knowledge, encourage self talk, promote cooperation, & continually monitor students comprehension. This story is great for having all students feel included while having a fun and cute 4y
Spearsall Continued: storyline. https://youtu.be/ZtIljDiqg3M this link includes the read aloud for the UDL I included, while explaining the stories plot line in detail. 4y

DrSpalding This is realistic fiction at its best. This book is a current book trending online! When Matt Dela Peña posted a picture of his daughter with this title, knowing that he is a Newbery award winning author… I knew this was a book I had to own. I am so happy you took some of the recommendations I presented in class and enjoyed them! So well done. 4y
