In this thought-provoking and entertaining debut novel about of a multicultural family, a dying billionaire matriarch leaks news of her death early so she can examine her legacya decision that horrifies her children and inadvertently exposes secrets she has spent a lifetime keeping. Dava Shastri, one of the world's wealthiest women, has always lived with her sterling reputation in mind. A brain cancer diagnosis at the age of seventy, however, changes everything, as she decides to take her deathlike all matters of her lifeinto her own hands. Summoning her four adult children to her private island, she discloses shocking news: in addition to having a terminal illness, she has arranged for the news of her death to break early, so she can read her obituaries. As someone who dedicated her life to the arts and the empowerment of women, Dava expects to read articles lauding her philanthropic work. Instead, her "death" reveals two devastating secrets, truths she thought she had buried forever. And now the whole world knows, including her children. This is a soft pick for me. Maybe ⭐️⭐️⭐️. Just good enough to hold my interest to finish it, but it won‘t stick with me. The story was okay, but the writing left me cold.

TheBookHippie I read this awhile back as an ARC it‘s a bit odd. Soft pick for me as well. 1y

Another good one from my #auldlangspine list!

It‘s quite the story. The characters‘ personalities are well developed and I waver between liking and disliking them. One of the brothers needs a good slap. 😆

I have no idea where this is going.

TheBookHippie I read the ARC. 👀 1y

This is the first book which I read about a woman of Indian Origin. Dava is a woman who wore many hats and has a lot of flaws too. Although I was very disappointed in the author to not be cognizant of the Telugu language, she had it written as Telegu in the book .

Are there any Littens in the Long Beach area? I‘ll be there soon and looking for bookstore recommendations.

UwannaPublishme One of my favorite used bookstores is about 15 minutes away in Lakewood. It‘s called Book Off. I also heard of Gatsby‘s Bookstore in LB. Have fun! There‘s so much to do there. Visit Naples, a hopping town next to LB. You can take a gondola ride there. 2y
sarahbellum I live just north of Long Beach, in Lakewood. I second Book Off! I haven‘t been to any other bookstores nearby since we only moved here recently. @UwannaPublishme do you live in the area too? (edited) 2y

sarahbellum @UwannaPublishme gotcha! Glad you‘ve got a store down there too! 2y
sarahbellum @rather_be_reading might have some LB recs since she lives in SoCal as well (not sure if she‘s still active on Litsy) 2y

Dava dedicated her whole life to philanthropy and when she learns she has terminal cancer, she gathers all her kids and grand kids and let‘s her death announcement get published. When an old rumor resurfaces and detracts from her life mission, she must face the truth of her life, relationships and impacts on those closest to her before the doctor actually helps her reach her final day. I really liked this, very likable unlikable characters

Very interesting novel about a dying billionaire philanthropist who fakes her death so that she can see her obits before she goes. When an old rumor about her dominates the news rather than her philanthropy, she tries to fix it, enlisting her stunned adult children in the process. https://cannonballread.com/2022/03/dava-shastris-last-day-a-novel-elcicco/

A well-written contemporary debut with beautiful writing reminiscent of Taylor Jenkins Reid. Well-crafted, though not always likable characters. Poignant & thoughtful with a narrative filled with introspection. The pace is a bit languid & could cause problems for some readers, as it is much more character centered than plot motivated. Reads like a mix of contemporary & literary fiction. A lot of emotional content & a very impressive debut novel.

3🌟I found this a bit of a slower read. I loved the premise and Dava wanting to end her life her own way. But for a character driven novel I have to say I didn't like any of the characters much and I think this is why this one was just ok for me. I did appreciated the multicultural family representation though and a storyline that included assisted dying. #bookreview

Dava Shastri, a billionaire philanthropist, is dying but none of her children or grandchildren know. She has brought them to her private island to say goodbye. So obsessed with controlling her legacy, she leaks the news of her death a few days early, and the family learns about two long-held secrets, mom would rather bury. A great family drama about controlling and letting go. I would‘ve read more!

Note ⬇️

Megabooks I like how she set this in the near future (2044) so many readers could relate to the cultural touchstones the author includes from Dava‘s childhood and young adulthood (1970s to 2000s). Also: I wonder how this will compare to Black Cake, which sounds similar. I‘m really kicking myself for not ordering BC because I‘d like to compare the two. 2y
BarbaraBB This sounds very good. 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB it‘s solidly enjoyable contemporary fiction. It‘s everything I look for in a family drama. 2y

This family drama is long on the drama. Billionaire philanthropist Dava Shastri has terminal cancer and decides to go out on her own terms. But first she wants to see how the world will remember her. Surprise! It's not for her generosity and all the lives she impacted but for the hints of scandal in her past. Her children meanwhile are blindsided by her diagnosis, her plans to end her life, and the premature announcement of her death. None of ⬇️

bookandbedandtea ⬆️ these characters is particularly likeable but all of their stories are interesting. I didn't love this book but I did like it. 👍🏻 2y

Family drama is the name of the game in this debut novel. It‘s actually more than that but I‘ll let the read discover this for themselves. Have Kleenex handy, be prepared to chuckle a few times. #wintergames2021 #wintercosy 10 pts impulse read @Clwojick @PuddleJumper
