Orphan Number Eight
Orphan Number Eight | Kim Van Alkemade
For use in schools and libraries only. A stunning debut novel in the vein of Sarah Waters' historical fiction and inspired by true events, it tells the fascinating story of a woman who must choose between revenge and mercy when she encounters the doctor who subjected her to dangerous medical experiments in a New York City Jewish orphanage. In 1919, Rachel Rabinowitz is a vivacious four-year-old living with her family ina crowded tenement on New York City's Lower Eastside. When tragedy strikes, Rachel is separated from her brother Sam and sent to a Jewish orphanage where Dr. Mildred Solomon is conducting medical research. Subjected to X-ray treatments that leave her disfigured, Rachel suffers years of cruel harassment from the other orphans. But when she turns fifteen, she runs away to Colorado hoping to find the brother she lost and discovers a family she never knew she had. Though Rachel believes she's shut out her painful childhood memories, years later she is confronted with her dark past when she becomes a nurse at Manhattan's Old Hebrews Home and her patient is none other than the elderly, cancer-stricken Dr. Solomon. Rachel becomes obsessed with making Dr. Solomon acknowledge, and pay for, her wrongdoing. But each passing hour Rachel spends with the old doctor reveal to Rachel the complexities of her own nature. She realizes that a person's fate-to be one who inflicts harm or one who heals-is not always set in stone. Lush in historical detail, rich in atmosphere and based on true events, Orphan #8 is a powerful, affecting novel of the unexpected choices we are compelled to make that can shape our destinies.

Orphaned Rachel craved the love of a mother but got the x-ray experiments of ambitious Dr. Mildred Solomon instead, experiments that caused her to lose both hair and health. At the end of her life, Dr. Solomon craves mercy but finds herself in the conflicted care of an adult Rachel. Orphan #8 is a richly told dual timeline historical fiction that brings to life historical NYC and the tangled history of two women with the power to hurt each other.

I recently read this book with my book club. I really liked it. Rachel was such a strong character for all she went through, especially for the time in which the story took place. It‘s based on true events which is so hard to believe. I would recommend this book to other readers.

#NovemberByTheNumbers Two books I read with #8 in the title... tagged book had all the elements I like in historical fiction but for some reason( the writing? the execution? ) this book was only a so-so. #Eight Hundred Grapes which I thought would be trite was a total pick! Way smarter than I thought it would be...

emilyhaldi So glad you mentioned this about 🍇!! I keep passing over it for the same reasons you mentioned 7y
Cinfhen It‘s a good #palettecleanser @emilyhaldi 😊I read it from a library copy...which made it even sweeter 7y
MallenNC I read Eight Hundred Grapes and really enjoyed it. I agree with you-- there was more to it than I expected. 7y

DebinHawaii I have Eight Hundred Grapes on my Kindle & need to read it. 👍I liked Orphan #8 more than you did--not an easy read but I found the story and the history behind it interesting. 7y
Cinfhen It was a great story to be told & the history was fascinating but something in the storytelling didn‘t work for me @DebinHawaii 😬I‘m glad you enjoyed it😊I was unaware of the history regarding the NY Jewish Orphanage 😢😢😢 7y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen I wasn't aware of it either until this book. So tragic. 😢 7y

I thought this book was absolutely fantastic. It kept me interested the entire time. It's heartbreaking, and beautiful. I read this by recommendation and I'm happy to say I was not disappointed. Every sentence was written with purpose. I admire this author and can't wait for her next book!

Two of my #booksfromboxes for today's #junetunz prompt. The first is YA historical fiction and queer lit. My litten santa suggests reading it with tissues. Reading more queer lit is one of my goals this year! The 2nd is also YA historical fiction and has my favorite setting, NYC, the Lower East Side specifically. @Yamich49 worked so hard to find perfect books for me including another by an author I love, and one more with my favorite setting! 👇🏻

While I found this to be good, I felt that it was lacking something. Maybe it would be better as non-fiction? I don't know. It was still quite fascinating and it was about something I'd had no idea about so it was good as a history lesson lol. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't boring - it was definitely worth a read. It's just in the middle of pick and so-so. Basically I didn't cry at the end 😄

Reecaspieces I agree...I read it years ago...it was lacking something. 8y
Cosyreader @Reecaspieces I found that I couldn't connect with Rachel and I cared more about the other characters - did you feel the same? 8y
Reecaspieces @Amy-Laura I really don't remember...it was several years ago...I just remember not liking it as much as I wanted to 8y

?? #Audiobook

Just barely gets 3?'s for me.

While the history behind the events that took place at the Hebrew orphanages in the mid 1900's was fascinating (and appalling!), this story just wasn't executed in a way that felt compelling enough to garner a "Pick."

In the long evening light of summer, Rachel watched the window picture show until darkness dimmed the screen. Confronted with her reflection in the dark glass, Rachel relished the notion that no one in the world knew where she was. The freedom was intoxicating, like living inside a secret.

Orphan #8 is a historical fiction novel about a young Jewish girl in the early 1900s. I found it to be a compelling tale filled with the horrors of humans and the kindness as well. Many things that happened to her were awful and I don't understand how people could have done those things. Many people she encountered were beyond wonderful. I did have trouble at times figuring out the timetables of events, but all in all an excellent read.

#recommendsday Sneaking in a recommendation since this book is $1.99 on Kindle & Nook & well worth it. A novel about Rachel, put in NYC's Hebrew Infant Home in 1919 where, along w/other children, she is experimented on by a doctor conducting research. Story moves between Rachel's childhood there & 1954 where as a hospice nurse, the doctor becomes her patient. Not a happy book but a compelling story w/a thread of hope & strength. Review link below

LectricSheep That recipe looks phenomenal! I've only ever had poached pears and apples, and I wasn't the biggest fan, but poached plums sound delicious. Screenshotted! 😁 8y
DebinHawaii @LectricSheep It is a great little recipe. I actually like poached pears and apples, but plums with their texture and sweet/tangy taste are even better in my opinion! 👍😀 8y

Loved this book based on the X-ray experiments done on healthy children in an orphanage during the early 1900s. The story moves back and forth in time so we can see Rachel's life unfold. When the dr who experimented on her becomes her patient to care for Rachel must decide if she wants to get even with her.
