The Shell Collector
The Shell Collector: Stories | Anthony Doerr
The "perilously beautiful" (Boston Globe) first story collection by the author of the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning #1 New York Times bestseller All The Light We Cannot See.The exquisitely crafted stories in Anthony Doerrs debut collection take readers from the African Coast to the pine forests of Montana to the damp moors of Lapland, charting a vast physical and emotional landscape. Doerr explores the human condition in all its varietiesmetamorphosis, grief, fractured relationships, and slowly mending heartsconjuring nature in both its beautiful abundance and crushing power. Some of the characters in these stories contend with hardships; some discover unique gifts; all are united by their ultimate deference to the ravishing universe outside themselves.

This short story collection that explores themes of the natural world was hit or miss for me. The ones with elements of fantasy just didn‘t work for me at all. But The Caretaker, one about a man fleeing the Liberian civil war who finds himself in Oregon unable to move on, is one of the best individual stories I‘ve read this year. The title story was great, too. A worthy #BorrowNotBuy.

SamAnne I love his collection Memory Wall. 13mo

This arvos walk home from work. Off to yin yoga tonight with the step daughters too. Keeping up with goals to a certain extent. May have gone over the wine limit last night. @wanderinglynn

BookwormAHN Your walk looks lovely and every now and then wine limits should be broken 😸 6y

Bailedbailed

Argh! My first bailed book for 2019. 😩 I got through a third of this audiobook & found it incredibly boring. I don‘t think the narrator helped either. I picked it because I wanted something to listen to & I thought All The Light We Cannot See was OKAY.

I don‘t think the book is entirely to blame. I‘ve been too busy to read this week, so I‘m quite behind on my goals. Any free time I‘ve had I‘ve been too tired to read! 😴

Hope_a Is that bad? I‘m looking forward to read this, because I liked 6y
greenhairdontcare @Hope_a I didn‘t mind ATLWCS but I wasn‘t in love with it. If you liked it then you might like this! I‘m a big fan of short stories but the first three just didn‘t grab & hold my attention. I found the second story quite frustrating & despised the main character. (edited) 6y

“You spend your life avoiding these things; you end up seeking them out.”

Taking a break from Tristram to delve into these short stories.

There must not be much profit in short stories because I don't see a ton of them out there on the market. But the form is so satisfying when well done, which AD did beautifully with this anthology imo. #shortstories #mentalescapes

Emilymdxn I‘m a really big short stories fan, always happy to see good collections out there! I wish they were promoted more in bookshops etc., I think more people would like them if they gave them a try 7y
Updrifting @Emilymdxn I so agree! They're like little scrumptious edibles, and more people would eat them if they were around. 🙂 7y

I don‘t know if I was in the right mood for this. These stories are quiet and contemplative; the writing is beautiful at times but I just kept getting distracted. I did love the title story and So Many Chances, though.

I mostly picked up this book because I like the rhythm of Doerr‘s writing style and wanted a hiatus from a Holocaust book. It‘s a collection of short stories, each one with, not exactly a moral , but a tale or yarn with many layers of complexity. The language is beautiful, I don‘t always love the stories.

Sills I have this book just haven't had time to read it yet-ugh😳 7y

Only took me 8 months to finish! I tend to take breaks between short stories but I think this was even better because I dragged it out. Favorites were "The Hunter's Wife", "The Caretaker", and "Mkondo".

Nag1 My favorites were The Shell Collector and The Hunter‘s Wife. 5y

Now, moving on to this... I'm choosing to read this because it's a collection of stories that I think I can easily detach from (as I need to make a lot of time for studying and school work) as opposed to a novel that I would probably become too emotionally invested in, and have a hard time breaking away from. I loved All the Light We Cannot See by Doerr, so I'm hoping this is great in its own way 😊.

scripturient I've been wanting to buy this for a while. Looking forward to your review. :) 8y

Short stories paired with a cortadito while waiting for court to be in session. ☕

Readingrobin Cortadito? 8y
BraveNewBooks @Readingrobin a cortadito is a tiny cup of very strong coffee served with a bit of milk--the Cuban answer to espresso, really. "Corto" means "short" in Spanish so it seemed like an auspicious pairing for a short story! 8y

As I've mentioned, I'm busily tearing out articles, book reviews, essays, etc from seemingly every publication known to man. Most get categorized and donated to the local Biblioteca, so naturally I keep "a few" for myself! Note to self: you have to pack these all home along with all the books and shoes you bought! #blameitonlitsy #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge

If you loved Al the Light We Cannot See, and enjoy short stories, you have to read this. Doerr steeps his characters in specialness. I cannot stop thinking about them.

PaulaLib Chose this as my book club book for upcoming school year. We've read All the light..., and am excited to have our discussion of Doerr's short stories. 8y
