The Unbroken
The Unbroken | C. L. Clark
"A perfect military fantasy: brutal, complex, human and impossible to put down." - Tasha Suri, author of Empire of Sand In an epic fantasy unlike any other, two women clash in a world full of rebellion, espionage, and military might on the far outreaches of a crumbling desert empire. Touraine is a soldier. Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts. But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought. Luca needs a turncoat. Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet's edge between treason and orders. Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne. Through assassinations and massacres, in bedrooms and war rooms, Touraine and Luca will haggle over the price of a nation. But some things aren't for sale.

It was a slow, rainy day at work yesterday so I used that time (and my earbuds) to knock out a good chunk of my bookclub book.

Mehso-so

Between a So-So and a Pick. The book got my attention only because of the stunning cover illustration (yes, Gideon vibes). The story itself is highly political and more than once reminded of the state our world is currently in. Sadly, the whole thing just lacked speed and the characters stayed rather distant from me. Anyway, I ordered the second novel, since I want to know how the author goes on from here.

Overall, I liked this very original epic political fantasy that is heavy on the politics and short of the fantasy. It is a common story of the downtrodden rebelling against the ruling class, to fight for their culture and religion. The two main characters are both flawed and emotional journeys. There is just a little something missing, and that was the magic system.⬇️

Nessavamusic It is only lightly introduced and I am interested, and wished we had seen more of that and a little less political maneuvering. This read more like historical speculative fiction, with strong commentary on colonialism. It also has great lgbtq+ representation. 3.5⭐️ 2y

Tagging the first book because I can't find this one!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That is a great cover! I love it, it‘s great to see a queen on her throne, and not half undressed 😂 I know, such a little thing, but awesome! 2y
Branwen @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It's not a little thing at all! I completely agree! 👍🏻💕 2y

A slightly late April #BookSpinbingo wrap up... Once again, I knocked off quite a few books without reading my #BookSpin or #doublespin or getting any bingos. #failingsuccessfully ! @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Still a great month!!! Amazing how sometimes having a goal immediately means the literal opposite happens! 😂 3y
llwheeler @TheAromaofBooks 😂 So true! 3y
shanaqui Hahaha, this kept happening to me at first too. 3y

llwheeler @shanaqui oh well, it's still reading! I am going to try harder for a bingo this month though haha 3y
shanaqui @llwheeler Good luck! I got six lines last month and of course I'm competitive with myself so this month I'd like to get seven... 😝 But tbh I'm happy if I just get some reading done. 3y
llwheeler @shanaqui good luck, that sounds ambitious! 3y

Mehso-so

I have put so-so even though I did enjoy it, but not enough to want to read the next in the series. It has a solider called Touraine back in her homeland where she was taken as a child to fight for the empire. Luca a princess trying to prove she will be able to win her throne and rule the empire. It has fighting, romance rebels and killing.

I was so excited to hear this book has a sequel because when I put it down I wanted more! Plenty of action wrapped in a bow of romance and betrayal The Unbroken surprised me. If I‘m honest I wasn‘t overly excited to read this book but was sucked in immediately and finished it in two days. Great read! I can‘t wait to see what‘s to come with these characters!

First book completed for #Scarathalon and #Screamathon! Finished before midnight last night. #Fantasy novel with good #LGBTQ representation and anti-colonial themes. Not crazy about the military stuff though.

Book Twitter calls these three books THE SAPPHECTA, I guess because they are all fantasy with golden covers and have queer content? I AM SOLD. 🎊
I haven‘t really read anything this week, but I‘m buying books left & right (whoops). Hope I will have the energy to read more soon. 📖🙏

#wyrdandwonder day 2: pop this in your book bag of holding

CL Clark‘s uncompromising debut is the best fantasy I‘ve read this year (so far): a military fantasy of colonial rebellion and conflicted romance, as a talented young officer finds herself torn between her heart, her heritage and her loyalty to a foreign empire that despises her. Brilliant and uncompromising.

This book is every bit as badass as its glorious cover: an unflinching look at the toxicity of empire. Featuring: so many good intentions and terrible decisions (TERRIBLE); much queer pining; THOSE ARMS; and a brilliant cast of well-realised characters refusing to compromise even though they are thoroughly compromised from the get go. The longer I sit with this the more I love it. Fantastic.

This might be my favorite cover of the year so far! Look how badass she is! And those arms! 😍👍 I am officially renaming this book: 'The Sexiness of Touraine's Arms'! 🤣😂

JazzFeathers It is indeed a great cover. 4y
