Powers and Thrones: A New History of the Middle Ages | Dan Jones
6 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
An audacious, entertaining page-turner. Dan Jones covers a thousand years of history with elegance and panache.Dan Carlin, host of Hardcore History "Simply the best popular history of the Middle Ages there is."The Sunday Times (UK) The New York Times bestselling author returns with an epic history of the medieval worlda rich and complicated reappraisal of an era whose legacy and lessons we are still living with today. When the once-mighty city of Rome was sacked by barbarians in 410 and lay in ruins, it signaled the end of an era--and the beginning of a thousand years of profound transformation. In a gripping narrative bursting with big namesfrom Sts Augustine and Attila the Hun to the Prophet Muhammad and Eleanor of AquitaineDan Jones charges through the history of the Middle Ages. Powers and Thrones takes readers on a journey through an emerging Europe, the great capitals of late Antiquity, as well as the influential cities of the Islamic West, and culminates in the first European voyages to the Americas. The medieval world was forged by the big forces that still occupy us today: climate change, pandemic disease, mass migration, and technological revolutions. This was the time when the great European nationalities were formed; when the basic Western systems of law and governance were codified; when the Christian Churches matured as both powerful institutions and the regulators of Western public morality; and when art, architecture, philosophical inquiry and scientific invention went through periods of massive, revolutionary change. The West was rebuilt on the ruins of an empire and emerged from a state of crisis and collapse to dominate the world. Every sphere of human life and activity was transformed in the thousand years covered by Powers and Thrones. As we face a critical turning point in our own millennium, Dan Jones shows that how we got here matters more than ever.

It‘s been a while since I‘ve posted here!

I have been reading Powers and Thrones by Dan Jones for probably 10 months. Even though it‘s a lengthy book, the main reason it took me this long was because I was pursuing my Masters.
-
This was such a well written and well explained book and I learnt a lot about Romans, knights, monks, etc. If you want to know more about medieval history, buy this book! You won‘t be disappointed.

37/150 Although this is a lengthy audiobook, over 24 hours, it's well worth the time. The amount of detail the author has put into this is staggering at times, but Jones takes the various historical events, names and places and fits them together like a jigsaw puzzle to show medieval life from all angles

1. I just started the tagged book, but it's very good. I think it will be one of my favorite reads for 2022.
2. Poster 90% of the time. There are days when I'm not in the mood to talk so I just lurk and read other people's posts.

5⭐️!!! This is how a great history is told! Jones does a masterful job of covering a huge time period in a focused and interesting way. I enjoyed every moment of this audiobook! Amazingly Jones revisits many topics from his previous books without duplication. He‘s proven that he‘s a true story teller and a skilled historian! Super fun!! 👑

DGRachel I have several of his books. I really need to bump them up my TBR! 3y
