I am late (like, 36 years late?) to the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike party but here I am and I‘m psyched! Witty and gritty and set (written!) in the 80‘s, this book hit the spot in my reading life right now. I‘ve already downloaded the next in the series…it looks like I get to saddle up for a long relationship with these guys if I choose to read all 19. The 1st was pretty violent…but I was fully invested in the good v evil, bloodshed and all! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#20Series20Days Day 3

This is another series with a really strong sense of place, where the setting, LA, comes alive & is as important a character as the people strolling across the page. That‘s enough by itself to make this one of my #Top20Series but what cements its place on my list is wisecracking Elvis Cole & more importantly, Joe Pike. Mystery & trouble are never far behind but rarely is it something they can‘t handle.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 I‘ve read the first one and really need to progress this series, especially as I own a few. 4y
EadieB I've only read the first one and need to read more too. 4y

This one was good. If you like detective novels. It's very Robert B Parker except it isn't. 💖📚🐒

I grew up devouring Hercule Poirot novels so I love a great mystery, so I was excited so see it as today‘s #agameoffavorites topic. I have a lot of mystery writers I love by my favorite PI series is Robert Crais‘ Elvis Cole. In an interview he listed Robert Heinlein as his favorite writer along with Hemmingway, Chandler, Harlan Ellison and Twain. Stranger in a Strange Land is my personal favorite Heinlein novel followed by Starship Troopers.

TaylorMay Also finding out that all the books are already out and you won't have to wait for years between books. ❤💙 6y
Blueberry @TaylorMay LOL, and then you read them all and have to wait again. Or worse yet the author dies!!! 6y
TaylorMay @blueberry don't even tall like that!! 😣😣 lol yeah I definitely have to read an entire series again before the next book. Especially because I usually blasted through it the first time 😂 6y

And then I "accidentally" stumbled into abebooks.com & Dymocks.com.au but it doesn't count because they were all bargains! The 3 from abebooks.com are used books & even counting delivery was $17, and the ones from Dymocks were a 3for$33 sale on penguin books plus a free journal, & the Harry Potter I paid for with my store rewards credits. So all up it was only $32 coz they had free delivery this weekend. Bargain! #ItsStillYourFaultElkeo

LeahBergen Have you read In Cold Blood? It blew my doors off. 😍 7y
Lizpixie @LeahBergen no I haven't. It's one I've always meant to read but never gotten to. When I saw it in the penguin sale, I had to finally get myself a copy. 7y

elkeOriginal @LeahBergen With your doors blown off, it's now easier for your postman to just bring your deliveries inside for you. 😉 7y
LeahBergen @elkeo Baha!! Yes! He can just toss them in from several metres away now. 😄 7y
LizzyM Yep, In Cold Blood is SOOOO good. One of my favorite books last year! 7y
tpixie @LizzyM @LeahBergen I'm from Kansas and still haven't read it. Afraid it'll scare me- so close to home ! 7y
LizzyM @tpixie Yeah it would be a bit freaky for sure! I live in Kansas City and small parts were set in Olathe. Plus I grew up on a farm in MO so the setting was familiar. Very surreal and it gave me the shivers! Such a chilling story and so well written. 7y
Karkar @tpixie where in Kansas do you live? I just moved from living there for most of my life. Medicine Lodge and Hutchinson 7y
tpixie @LizzyM oh wow! I didn't know about Olathe. Good thing I didn't read it as a kid since I grew up in Overland Park! 7y
tpixie @Karkar oh wow! We just missed each other! I grew up in Overland Park, spent most of my adult life in Wichita, but have now lived in Hutchinson for last 10 years!! if you come back this way we can have a #LitsyMeetUp! 7y
tpixie @LizzyM well if the book is that good maybe it's time for me to read it -I think I can handle it now! 7y

Posting about Elvis Cole this morning inspired me to do a reread of the 1stbook in the series,so glad I did! I love Robert Crais' style of writing. It's like a mix of Michael Connolly,Raymond Chandler & Dashiell Hammett with huge sprinklings of humour & general smart assing.Elvis Cole is a PI working in LA,a Vietnam Vet with a wise ass mouth,he helps the helpless, along with his partner, Joe Pike, another vet with no visible sense of humour at all.

Loving snarky, badass PI Elvis Cole in this debut. I've had quite a few out loud chuckles.

And apparently Elvis looks like John Cassavetes...

I found this in my favorite used book store. This is excellent airplane reading. The story is a fast, funny, private detective adventure through the big shoulder-padded, big-haired 1980s. Big fun.
