Mr. Midshipman Hornblower
Mr. Midshipman Hornblower | C.S. Forester
Volume 1 of the Hornblower Saga (Jan 1793 - Nov 1797) Volume One of the enormously popular Horatio Hornblower Saga. Seventeen year old Horatio joins the British Navy to fight against Napoleon and his tyranny of Europe. Duels, imprisonment, shipwrecked sailors, naval battles - challenges that spawn one of literature's best loved heroes -- this is where it all begins.

So I enjoyed this yarn a lot more than I expected with its awkward young hero and tales of adventure on the high seas. More of a series of loosely connected short stories than a cohesive story, so it made for a quick read. A warning though - it‘s of its time and has some unfortunate stereotypes. My #bookspin book and second book down for #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Continuing my #40Miles20Hours challenge by listening to this book, which is an excellent read.

Day 1 : 0.65 miles 15 minutes

Day 2 : 1.52 miles 30 minutes

Overall total of 2.17 miles, and 45 minutes. It‘s a start!

Only counting to Audiobook listening whilst walking, otherwise would be a greater time.

ScientistSam ❤️ Horatio Hornblower! 4y

Started listening to Mr Midshipman Hornblower, I‘m using this as company for #40miles20hours

Day 1 didn‘t start well, only 15 minutes walking time and 0.65 miles 😔, will try to pick my pace up day by day. Lockdown doesn‘t help this!

wanderinglynn Every step counts! And the important thing is that you started 🙌🏻🎉 4y
Andrew65 @wanderinglynn Thanks, aiming to double or treble that today. 🤞 4y

Andrew65 @runswithscissors007 Thanks, every journey starts with a first step! 😊 4y
runswithscissors007 @andrew65 I just noticed that you walked .65 miles and your name is andrew65. so perfect. Also, Hornblower is one of my husband's favourites. (Somehow that sounds wrong... but I'm not sure how... lol!). 4y
Andrew65 @runswithscissors007 😂 I remember reading them years ago and really enjoying them, can see why. Has he ever tried the Kydd series by Julian Stockwin, these are good sea adventures. 4y
Andrew65 @runswithscissors007 Well spotted on the 65. 👏🙌😊 4y
GHABI4ROSES You still have more miles than I 💪🏾 4y
runswithscissors007 Thanks for the recommendation! I will try that! He likes series. He‘s currently into Longmire. But his passion is sailing. 4y

I haven't read marine adventures since school. Back then I was a huge fan of sailing ships, pirates and Captain Blood ⛵ Mr. Hornblower reminded me of this childhood love 💙💙💙 This book is a page turner. Main character's personality is so not heroic, but really interesting and contradictory. Quite a bit of historical realities and oh this British humour! 😁 I wish I knew about #Hornblower series before!

Oh but did I love me some Ioan Gruffudd back in the day. Yet another literary love I was brought to by the film adaptation. Mr Midshipman Hornblower made his #homebythesea unless of course he was busy making his fortune on the seas. #rockinmay @Cinfhen

Chelsey He's actually the only celebrity I've ever written to, back when fan mail was actually paper mail and not Twitter follows. His mum handled his correspondence at the time and she wrote me a lovely thank you along with a signed pic. My little tween heart almost burst. 7y
Cinfhen That's such an awesome story ?love that his mum was his "momager" ?? 7y
LegosAndPajamas He is such a dreamboat 💜 6y

Going off of Eeyore's coloring, violets, blues and purples. Also, he seems gloomy, which made me think of rain, which lead to the tempest sea on the cover.

Bought four books at the used book sale! #bookhaul The bottom two are nautical tales for me. And the other two are for people. A win win 😊

Another book bought just for the cover. I'm about 2:1 against these kinds of buys working out for me. But what the heck! Let's shoot for 50%! The one success btw was Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death. The Grantchester Mysteries series has such beautiful covers and the content is no less charming.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa The Horatio Hornblower series was quite good when they made it, hopefully the book is equally good! 7y
The_Old_Astronomer @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I hope so! It definitely looks promising 7y
