Desperation in Death
Desperation in Death: An Eve Dallas Novel | J. D. Robb
11 posts | 10 read | 1 to read
The #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a gripping new thriller that pits homicide detective Eve Dallas against a conspiracy of exploitation and evil... New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed. Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway whod been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, whod hatched the escape plan. Mina was the more daring of the twobut theyd been equally desperate. Unfortunately, they didnt get away fast enough. Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt. Eve Dallas looks over the scene. Minas expensive, elegant clothes and beauty products convince Dallas that she was being groomed, literally and figuratively, for sex traffickingand that whoever is investing in this high-overhead operation expects windfall profits. Her billionaire husband, Roarke, may be able to help, considering his ties to the citys ultra-rich. But Roarke is also worried about the effect this case is having on Dallas, as it brings a rage to the surface she can barely control. No matter what, she must keep her head clear--because above all, she is desperate for justice and to take down those who prey on and torment the innocent.

2. I started reading Atlas Shrugged sometime in the 90s & still haven‘t finished it. 😆 On average, I finish a book in a day or two. If I put it down for any length of time, I normally either restart it or DNF it. Notes On Complexity has taken me a while because it‘s on physics & takes a lot of thought, so I‘ve been reading it in parts.

3. Not sure I have a “proudest” but I‘m pretty happy with passing 2 bar exams.

Amiable I admire your diligence in plugging away at that book for so many years! 😃 9mo

wanderinglynn @Amiable 😂 it‘s spent most of that time sitting in a shelf collecting dust! 9mo
Amiable @wanderinglynn When does a book cross the line between “I'm still reading it, just not right now“ to “I should just admit I'm never going to finish this thing“? I have a nonfiction book about Richard Nixon that I got about 200 pages into and then put down. I still think I'm going to read it. Someday,. Maybe. 😃 9mo
mom2bugnbee The bar exam is absolutely a "proudest"! Congrats! 9mo
wanderinglynn @Amiable good question! Considering I still have Atlas on my bookshelf, the answer might always be “someday. Maybe.” 😆 9mo

Hm, normally I love the Eve Dallas books and read them in a couple of hours. However, this one is about child sex trafficking, and so I had to keep putting it down to focus on something lighter. Yes, murder is never pleasant, but this one was a bit much for me.

First book for 2023! 🎉

Ruthiella I had to DNF a Nevada Barr mystery years ago for the same reason. ☹️ 1y
Aimeesue Ick. Bless the people who actually investigate such awful crimes; I can't even read about it. 🙁 1y

It is amazing to me that this is the 55th book in the series (“Naked In Death“ is the first) and I still really enjoy them. They are set around 2060, but don't let that scare you away...these are mysteries and while Robb's near future has seen some advances, the crimes haven't changed and the books do not read as science fiction. The case in this one involves the murder of a young teen, the search for another and a sex trafficking ring. 4.5/5

Eve & Roarke are back in the latest installment of the In Death series (#55!). These recent books in the series have really reinvigorated the series with stories that feel very now even though this is a speculative mystery series. Two girls escape a horrific situation, but only one survives. While solving a murder Eve & Co unlock a much bigger conspiracy. While this is a long running series that I definitely recommend, this could be read alone.5⭐️
