Adult Assembly Required
Adult Assembly Required | Abbi Waxman
106 posts | 44 read | 1 reading | 38 to read
"A young woman moves to Los Angeles to escape her life and discovers she doesn't have to leave all of herself behind to make a fresh start, from USA Today bestselling author Abbi Waxman. When Laura Costello moves to Los Angeles, hoping to finally get away from her overprotective family, she doesn't expect to be homeless after a week. (She's almost certain she didn't start that fire . . . right?) When she's rescued by a charming but eccentric bookseller and installed in a slightly chaotic and entirely illegal boardinghouse, she isn't sure if she's fallen on her feet or just out of the frying pan. A handsome housemate, a landlady with regrets, and the unwelcome attention of an old flame conspire to make Laura's life far more complicated than she hoped. However, a set of new friends who widen her experience-and knowledge of trivia-will do their very best to help this transplant put down roots and learn what it really means to be an adult"--

The POV in this changes so often, sometimes from one sentence to the next, that it's distracting from the story.

Thanks @Eggs for the #Two4Tuesday tag! 🤗

1️⃣ I honestly don‘t want a roommate but I guess I‘ll say Fitzwilliam Darcy in Pride and Prejudice so I could enjoy the grounds & library of Pemberley. 1️⃣

2️⃣ The boarding house in this book sounded absolutely charming & the group of roommates were fun too.

TheBookHippie #2 for sure!!! 2mo

After reading 2 books that shattered me back-to-back, I knew I needed a frothy and fun palate cleanser. Abbi Waxman always fits that bill. And bonus: Nina Hill appears in this one too!

I had gone almost halfway reading the tagged book before realising that Nina Hill made a comeback in Adult Assembly Required, though not as the main character but as a friend of the main character, Laura Costello. It made a nice read but I can't understand why it took so long for me to finish reading it.

I hand painted these faux ball which I used to decorate a birthday cake while I listened to some parts of the tagged 📕😉

I can‘t tell you how much I needed a light & fun book this month & this one delivered. Another great #SundayBuddyRead pick. It‘s a follow up to The Bookish Life of Nina Hill & just as enjoyable (I‘d read Nina first if you haven‘t as many of the characters have big roles or just pop up here.) I am a sucker for found family stories & the one that Laura finds when she moves from NYC to Los Angeles for grad school is a quirky & lovable one. All the ⬇️

DebinHawaii …feels as Laura finds her way out of some trauma & an overly-dominating family & fiancé & finds herself. The usual great discussions at SBR made it even more enjoyable. Can‘t wait for Polly‘s book! ? Another book finished during #20in4 #readathon too. (edited) 13mo

Thank ya for SUNDAYS! What did ya think of this book?

On to APRIL WE GO!

vlwelser I very much loved this fluffy book. And I also love this picture of your kicks. 13mo
mcctrish It was fun! I wasn‘t sure how it would hold up to our ‘serious‘ discussions but that third section was big with all the drama. Abbi Waxman is becoming one of my self care authors. 13mo
See All 42 Comments
vlwelser @mcctrish I like that. Self care authors. 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish these books are hard for me 🤣😅 but it‘s good self care, I agree. It‘s good for me to stretch my genres. Full disclosure I‘ve read every Danielle Steel book there is I started with my grandma and after she died at 98 I‘ve continued to read them with snark and snacks ♥️🤣👏🏼. 13mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I told her earlier when she posted that on her page it should be a thing a genre. 13mo
AmyG I love a good warm and fuzzy….self care….book. This author and Emily Henry always make me feel good. 13mo
Karisa @AmyG @AmyG @TheBookHippie I like “self care fiction” as a genre too. Never heard that before but makes sense. Sarah Addison Allen is my go to for book brain candy. I‘ll have to check out Emily Henry—sounds familiar.💗 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa oh yes I‘ve enjoyed those books. I can‘t do Emily Henry 😝😵‍💫 I know her religiosity🤢🤮🙄 13mo
AmyG @Karisa what book would you suggest I start with for Sarah Addison Allen? @TheBookHippie yikes about Emily Henry 😬 and I just googled! I did not like A Million Junes. I take it all back…she is not a self care read!! 🤣 (edited) 13mo
Karisa @AmyG I think Garden Spells was the first of hers I read. Most of her novels stand alone. She‘s cozy, magical realism with lots of found family themes. Her new one is good too (tagged). If on Facebook, check her out too. My FB got hacked, and I miss her posts. Anyone out the have a connection at FB?! 😢 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I think I‘ve read 3 of her books Other Birds was a BOTM pick for me. 13mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I think you would like her and I think my first was 13mo
mcctrish @AmyG I‘m a yes to Emily Henry too 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 13mo
mcctrish @TheBookHippie oh no ( Emily Henry) and @Karisa I need to check out SAA 13mo
Sargar114 This was a delightful read. I didn‘t know self-care fiction was a thing, but if it is Waxman would be my go to. I‘ve read this one by Henry, and it was okay but I prefer the mirroring of quirky and real world problems that Waxman does beautifully. 13mo
DebinHawaii I really needed a self care book (love this @mcctrish !) this month & loved this one! 🧡🧡🧡 @AmyG I love Sarah Addison Allen-definitely a go-to for me as well. I would start with Garden Spells & the follow up First Frost but her latest, Other Birds, has a similar found family vibe like this book. You really can‘t go wrong with any of her books. 🤗 (edited) 13mo
mcctrish @DebinHawaii I just put 2 SAA books in my book outlet cart 👏🏻👏🏻 13mo
DebinHawaii @mcctrish Yay! 🎉 I think you‘ll love them! 13mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I hope you‘re feeling better!!!! ♥️ 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I hope you like them! 13mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I cannot unhear or unknow her alt right religiosity 😬😫🤷🏻‍♀️😝😅.. I know a lot of people love her books. 13mo
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie Thank you. I am starting to feel much better. Lots of naps. 🤗 (edited) 13mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I‘m so glad! I hope the new job is all you hope for!! 13mo
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie Me too. I think that the remote factor plus the seemingly less toxicity & ability to focus on what I love doing (with better pay) will be a big relief—it already is although I still have a week+ to go at my current job. 🙏🏼 13mo
IndoorDame I hadn‘t know that about Emily Henry! I enjoyed the one book of hers I read, but not enough that I‘d read another after learning that… 13mo
mcctrish Well I‘m out with the Emily Henry 13mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame LOL look what I have done! OY. 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish Sorry about that...... 13mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie 😂😂😂can‘t help starting tiny revolutions everywhere you go 👏👏👏 13mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame FOR REAL. It is innate........ 13mo
mollyrotondo First of all, love @TheBookHippie all your revolutions! I don‘t always pick up on certain authors‘ backgrounds so I appreciate the insight! This book did not hold up against Nina Hill for me. There was too much romance and not enough self growth in this one as there was in Nina‘s book. It just wasn‘t my type of contemporary fiction. But I would definitely give the author another chance with a Polly book! 13mo
mcctrish I only ever gave her 3 stars so it‘s not a huge loss 🤣🤣 13mo
Larkken @TheBookHippie @mcctrish @vlwelser love the idea of self care authors, especially those introduced by family! For me this would be Mary Stewart (and I see there‘s a book by her in the schedule later this year, yay!) and I also found this book to be very soothing and affirming. I‘ll have to check out Addison Allen - I also found Kingsolver‘s Prodigal Summer to be self care-adjacent when I read it last year. Like a hug of a book 🫂 13mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken we have read all of Simone St. James books together and she said she was inspired by Mary Stewart, so we are starting with the book we have for October. I‘m anxious to read it- hopefully then we can read more. And hopefully Simone St James will publish another book. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken I love self care author as a genre as well. 13mo
Larkken @TheBookHippie I can see St James as similar to Stewart now that you mention it, interesting! FYI, I've seen many Mary Stewart books on Kindle sales recently, if y'all do digital copies... 13mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken oh yes I don‘t but a lot of our group does! If you see our October book post it! Thx so much! 13mo
mcctrish Oh @Larkken I am checking the Kingsolver out ( and looking forward to Mary Stewart) 13mo

Laura drives

Bob returns to say I love you

Laura gets told how she helped all of them

The end

A little fast all at once?

vlwelser I think it's just right. Even if the pace is very uneven. 13mo
mcctrish I thought it was lovely ( but yes to uneven) I continue to LOVE this house so much! I‘d like to have a Sunday buddy read weekend there 13mo
AmyG Yes, I found the end a bit quick. But still loved it. All was as it should be. 🎀 13mo
See All 16 Comments
Karisa I agree with all above too fast, but it also worked. The depiction of LAX was so off base though. It‘s a freaking city unto its own. Plus the 405–no way! Laura driving into that for the first time really driving in years would‘ve sent her into panic mode. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa LAX 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 I‘ve been searched there 🤣😅. The 405 just no. I panic as a passenger 😫😫. 13mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie I‘ve had my bags pulled aside for an extra search there. Horrible place. Should be one of Dante‘s circles. 😈 I can‘t take them at all and have only been a passenger there. So overwhelming! Just no. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa It‘s not high on my list -it is second to worst -although LaGuardia is now renovated not sure if that‘s still awful. LAX is then the worst. As for the 405 we try to avoid it . Thankfully we are usually by either San Francisco or San Diego when in CA. 13mo
Sargar114 I loved this scene! It worked for the story, but agree as a first time driver navigating LA traffic and freeways is far fetched. Even native drivers would be stressed!!! I really enjoyed the 3 way call with Polly and Nina here and how they were supportive but distracting. And 💯 buy that Bob would have picked Burbank and Laura would have no idea being from New York and automatically picking LAX. I laughed out loud! 13mo
DebinHawaii It was quick but fun & sweet & totally the rom-com ending the book needed. I had to laugh when she threw up on his shoes. 🤮🤣 Bob is a keeper. 13mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I loved our sunflower man. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 🤣 agree. 13mo
mollyrotondo I was fine with this part being rushed because I‘m really not into these rom com stories 😂 love a book with developing friendships but the romance isn‘t my top priority when reading these books. I‘m glad they FINALLY said something to each other but I didn‘t need it to be drawn out any more than it only was all book 😆 13mo
Larkken sorry for the late catch ups 😅 I got Covid over the weekend but enjoyed these posts so I‘m snooping back through! I, also, was fine with the fast end for the romance. It was too drawn-out as it was. Maybe I wanted more of an epilogue though? I think I wanted more time with the cast together, but without the fabricated drama? 13mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken oh I‘m so sorry. Also no worries a couple of readers are always a week or two behind and then catch up. So if you ever get tagged later on in a comment that‘s why. In our sixth year together and I‘ve always kept it very loose so everyone can participate at the level that they can. ♥️♥️♥️ 13mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken I definitely want an epilogue but maybe she‘s going to write a Polly book or another character 🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo
Larkken @TheBookHippie I am on board for a Polly book for sure! Esp if there's more Maggie... 🙃 13mo

Polly is in recovery but has a date with Asher when her year anniversary comes ..
Thoughts on this revelation ?

I HOPE THERE IS A POLLY BOOK!

vlwelser I totally called this. I love Polly. I do hope she gets a book. Also still rooting for a Liz book. 13mo
mcctrish I was starting to wonder about Polly running off, who was it that said “you have a lot of friends” and I thought yes, but not good enough ones to be part of the story?! This made perfect sense and there totally better be a Polly book 13mo
AmyG Polly….I love the kind, quirky characters. They are the most interesting! 13mo
See All 13 Comments
Karisa @mcctrish And the scene at the trivia night with the guy Polly had dated but didn‘t remember. It all fits into place now. @AmyG Polly was my favorite of the book. 13mo
mcctrish @Karisa YES! I had forgotten that 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣🤣 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa that was my first thought!!! Aha. She doesn‘t remember .. 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I want a Polly book! 13mo
Sargar114 This revelation makes perfect sense! It also makes me even more so want a Polly book! I would love to read her journey. 13mo
DebinHawaii It made all the pieces like trivia night & all her dashing off make come together. Like everyone, I am 💯Team Polly & ready for her book. I like Asher too. 13mo
IndoorDame I‘m totally excited to read a Polly book! Especially after this revelation, because I like her insight that she has to get to know herself all over again and that‘s really intimidating. I think that could make a great premise for a story. 13mo
mollyrotondo Definitely love what the author did with Polly. It made sense and it felt so real. For as much as this book fell flat for me I would definitely love to read a Polly book since she wrote her character so well. 13mo

Phone call from her mom after she sent her parents mugs????

So it‘s all good now ?!

vlwelser Well it seems like a great step. I think the novel would be too long if they kept this narrative string going. 13mo
mcctrish This seemed bizarre but @vlwelser has a good point. Everyone can‘t be assholes and Nick and Madeline are big enough to fill that role. Maggie admitted her failings so Laura‘s mom had@to come around too 13mo
AmyG Who knows exactly what Laura‘s Mom was thinking when she got the mugs??? But…it broke the ice. A beginning for them. 🤞🏻 13mo
See All 10 Comments
Karisa The mugs were sweet and Laura‘s ceramics reminded me of my daughter. This whole section seemed on fast forward with the weeks flying by. As @vlwelser said probably for the best to keep it moving. 13mo
Sargar114 It was sweet, even if not terribly believable. I struggle to think that Laura never made her parents anything, even as a kid, but if you accept that premise I could see it as eye opening as a parent that maybe it‘s time to look at how you are as a parent if your kid waits 20 years to make you something. 13mo
DebinHawaii I don‘t think it meant everything was “fixed” or water under the bridge but it was a good first step. @Sargar114 Yes, it does seem like a stretch but it also doesn‘t seem like that kind of household or childhood, so I was okay to just go with it. 13mo
IndoorDame @Sargar114 @mcctrish I agree it seemed far fetched to me. 13mo
mollyrotondo @Sargar114 I also agree that it was bizarre. And snap she‘s now an understanding parent? It just seemed like an easy way to wrap up that relationship. 13mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo Right here's a mug. Oh yay it's all better now......Just no. 13mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie I actually think this book would have worked if we just got a book about Laura and her mom. We could have learned more about why her mom was the way she was and why a ceramic mug would break her coldness. But with her mom being on the side of the country nothing about their relationship made sense especially when you throw this mug thing into it. 13mo

Bob taking her to drive…
Finally at what seems ridiculousness Laura thinks oh I like Bob….
to which the girls say well no you‘re falling in love with him….

Thoughts on how this played out ?

vlwelser It's cute and ultimately fulfilling. 13mo
mcctrish Laura had so much shit to deal with, this is really the best way it should play out 13mo
AmyG After Nick, I understand why Laura was so hesitant to get back i to a relationship. I knew they would come together eventually. This was very sweet. 13mo
See All 9 Comments
Karisa It felt like this was more of a finding your place and people book than completely a romance. I enjoyed Laura‘s interactions with her housemates, Nina, and Clare. The Bob thing became a little frustrating with both being so hidden with their feelings until almost the last page. 13mo
Sargar114 It always seems in these kinds of books that the people involved are the last to know, but that‘s fine. It works in this case so I‘m okay with it. 13mo
DebinHawaii I was good with how it all played out. She needed a friend first & to get things on track before figuring out for herself even if everyone else knew. 13mo
IndoorDame @Karisa I totally agree! I found her relationships with everyone else much more fulfilling to watch. 13mo
mollyrotondo This was annoying. She knew she liked him. She just didn‘t want to admit it to herself because she was afraid. She had a bad relationship for so many years and no one back home supported her breaking up with him so she finally found good friends and she didn‘t want to mess that up. But she knew she was falling for him. 13mo

Yay thrift stores 👏🏼♥️
Nina Polly Laura
Nina & Laura‘s lunch talk. Interesting?

First time I liked Nina this book🙃

Thrift https://www.sustainablejungle.com/thrift-stores/thrift-stores-los-angeles/

https://www.lamag.com/mag-features/secondhand-la-thrifting-guide/

vlwelser Thrift stores are magic. I love that young people are into this now instead of buying new crap from overseas every 5 seconds. 13mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I love a good thrift. 13mo
mcctrish The thrifting is bang on with this generation, my youngest especially is obsessed. When I was in Uni I loved vintage too, finding stuff from the 50‘s and 60‘s rocked my world. I have been team Nina since the beginning 13mo
See All 12 Comments
AmyG @mcctrish Agreed. My son and DIL love thrift stores. Most of my grandson‘s clothes are bought there. They save money as he grows out of things so fast. It‘s also better for the environment. And you would never know…he is dressed just fine! I always liked Nina. She is quirky but a “good egg”. (edited) 13mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG my daughter does the same thing. 13mo
Karisa It is a great trend to see coming back. When I was in high school, that‘s where all the coolest kids shopped. It takes a lot of patience but the treasures found can be awesome. I was waiting for the Laura transformation scene but Waxman subdued it. It was a nice way to go—brought the 3 even closer together. 13mo
Sargar114 Changing hair or style is definitely a sign she wants to move on. I loved that Polly and Nina were mindful of her personality and what her style should be versus just trying to mold her into something completely different. However, I find it hard to believe there are boots and jeans that are comfortable to run in 🤨 13mo
DebinHawaii Love the thrift store scenes & Nina & Polly‘s approach with Laura. Like @mcctrish I am a Nina fan as holdover from the first book. I like her brand of quirky! 😉 13mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I loved her in her book it took a minute in this book.. 😝😬😅 13mo
IndoorDame @Karisa I also loved that the transformation was subdued! 13mo
mollyrotondo I like a shopping scene 😂 this was another good bonding moment for the three women. I liked Nina so much more in her book but this ending definitely redeemed her in this book. She was right about how being an adult means you realize you can‘t do things alone. We need help a lot of the time and that‘s a good thing. It‘s part of life. 13mo

Madeleine 🙄
Well she‘s just a bitch 🤣🙃

Nick OMG SO ABUSIVE
WHAT A DOUCHE CANOE ASSHAT
and FINALLY Laura speaks up👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Whew
How did you like the dinner?
Oy vey.

vlwelser Go Laura! Nick is definitely a douche canoe. 13mo
mcctrish Laura finding her voice was fantastic 👏🏻👏🏻 Nick is toxic and so is Madeline 13mo
AmyG Nick is an entitled ass. I was so happy Laura finally spoke up. And Madeline? A bitch. 13mo
See All 20 Comments
Karisa Nick more than deserved to be tossed out. He charged across the country to attack and belittle Laura. Who does that?! Madeline was not nice, but I felt a little bad for. She was invited there by Asher and most of her ill will seemed in her head. I thought it‘d have been more suiting to just ignore her. She seemed totally unnecessary to the plot. 13mo
Sargar114 I‘m not entirely certain why Madeline showed up (as a character in general) other than to maybe garner sympathy for Asher. She wasn‘t very redeeming. Nick deserved what he got and much more. So glad Laura found her voice and laughed when Polly teased her for being mild. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa @Sargar114 🤷🏻‍♀️no clue why she is in the story 🙄 13mo
DebinHawaii Maybe Madeline will come into play with Polly‘s story? I hope not but 🤷🏻‍♀️… But I was very happy that Laura called her out when she told Nick off. I was proud of Laura! 13mo
Sargar114 Oh good point @DebinHawaii 13mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii ohhhhh duh I didn‘t think of that! 13mo
IndoorDame @DebinHawaii ooh, I hope not! That hadn‘t occurred to me. I‘m so ready to have seen the last of Madeleine, but you‘re probably right. 13mo
IndoorDame Are people really as awful as Nick? I think I would‘ve walked out of that dinner just as a bystander. So toxic! 13mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame Yes. I‘ve known several and lucky me have in-laws like this. I‘ve walked out of my share before I cut ties totally. 13mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie yikes! I‘m sorry. Not that my life is full of people who are like rainbows and puppies or whatever, but most of the truly awful people I know are sneakier about it. That level of overt hostility in public would definitely take me by surprise. 13mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I am so use to it -being who I am where I live -if someone is kind I about fall over dead. My in-laws are like that to anyone not “fit” to be in their presence 🤣🤣🤣🤣 especially girls who marry into their family. I love seeing this type person in a book. It means the author has experienced it too generally! So it‘s not just me. Ha. 13mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie solidarity is so important! I think that‘s one of the reasons I‘m still in the city… 13mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame reason number one I‘m moving as soon as last kid is launched. 13mo
IndoorDame Good! I definitely picture you being happy in a big city 13mo
mollyrotondo I‘m was glad Laura said something but I thought she should have said more and everyone should have played a part in kicking him out. They all just sat there like lumps. I‘m glad she did it finally but it could have been more exciting 😂 13mo
Read4life I‘m so glad I wasn‘t drinking my coffee when I opened this one 😂 Douche canoe asshat 😂 Yeah. That about sums him up. 13mo

Maggie
All this knowledge, she amassed over the last two decades of child, rearing all useless now ….

What did you think of Maggie‘s confessions about how she raised her daughter?

vlwelser It does give some insight into the tension between her and the daughter but also between the siblings. I love the advice Laura gives. 13mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser me too! That was really wise. I started liking her more then. 😅🤣 13mo
mcctrish I totally turned back to liking Maggie. It would be hard not to react as she did back in the day 13mo
See All 10 Comments
AmyG Maggie may have had lots of education and practice in psychology but being a parent? Throw all that out the window. I just thought this made her more human. 13mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I agree it humanized her. 13mo
Karisa @AmyG Yes! That scene was wonderfully human. I bet we get more of Maggie if there is a Polly/Asher book on the way. 13mo
Sargar114 Well said @AmyG 13mo
DebinHawaii I agree @AmyG it definitely humanized her. 13mo
mollyrotondo I flip flopped between liking Maggie in the beginning to not liking her when it came to Laura and Nick but then liked her again when she confessed to her mistakes between her and her daughter. Everyone struggles no matter how much experience we think we have. 13mo

Happy Friday 🎉🎉 finished this for #sundaybuddyread and I‘m really happy with how it all wrapped up. This is touted as a stand alone book but I consider it a sequel to The Bookish Life of Nina Hill. Most of the lovely characters from Nina are in this and I‘m happy to see them. We meet some new people in AAR and I hope there are further developments from this lovely part of the bookverse coming our way

We re-enter the world of Nina Hill but from a different perspective. Laura, decides to make a change in her life and moves across the country to attend grad school. The friends she makes helps her to find herself while recovering from a trauma. It‘s much more lighthearted than I‘m making it sound, but also delves into the seriousness of life and the problems we all deal with. Quite enjoyed this world and was happy to go back. #sundaybuddyread

I like the people all living together
The book is a bit over the top messy for me and the drawing out Bob & Laura 🙄
So your thoughts?!

AmyG I am with @IndoorDame ….I love the house, too. I want to live there! (edited) 13mo
vlwelser I like the chaos but too many characters too many subplots and Laura and Bob need to just do it. 13mo

Sargar114 It fits for this world. I‘m enjoying it. I think the reason schedule (not blaming - is what it is) may be why it feels more drawn out. This book could very easily be read in a day and maybe have a different perspective. 13mo
Karisa Yup, it‘s a fluffy, warm read but fits for me right now. I love seeing how they all took her in. Then when they did the same to Nick, I wanted to shout at them STOP! 13mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 ha. Could be. Good thing we‘re having fun 🤣🤣🤣🤣. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa SAME!!!! 13mo
Larkken @vlwelser 💯 agree 13mo

Larkken @Karisa yes! I got so annoyed at the housemates for including him in the house dinner. Like, can‘t you read the room? 13mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken WHO thinks this is a good idea?! 😝 13mo
mcctrish There is a total chaos vibe but I still love it! The setting itself is the best character 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I agree the setting is the best! 13mo
DebinHawaii I like the chaos & that it is overall light & makes me laugh right now. 🤗 13mo

Read4life I like the whole vibe. The messy characters, the chaotic house, the quirky antics and conversations. I‘m happy I‘m reading (and laughing) about it and not living it. 🤓 13mo

Laura ….

Thoughts ?

IndoorDame She‘s too polite. I have a sneaking suspicion that if she was willing to make more of a scene Nick wouldn‘t still be an issue. 13mo
vlwelser She needs to be more aggressive with these trolls that keep trying to run her life. 13mo
AmyG I like Laura alot. @IndoorDame I am wondering if there may be a little blow up with Nick, where she really has it out with him and her Mom, too. Some people, myself included, it takes an awful lot to push my buttons but when I‘ve had it…I speak out. 13mo
See All 13 Comments
Sargar114 Agreed @IndoorDame! I wonder that as well @AmyG 13mo
Sargar114 I like Laura, I find myself relating to her a lot, especially at that age, so I understand her wanting to not make a scene but she really needs to advocate for herself. 13mo
Larkken I think she‘d make a better friend than a Book character. 13mo
mcctrish @Larkken ❤️ 13mo
mcctrish I get the feeling that Laura had to? give the people what they wanted to get to do her thing ( marks, school stuff = sports, go wherever Nick was going) and now that Laura is just doing what she thinks is best ( she had an almost life ending accident so she should be making big decisions like that, she more than anyone would realize how close she came to being dead or disabled ) they just don‘t like it #suckstobethem 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I‘m thinking it was her all along but it got worse with accident and she was like ENOUGH. My life. Not yours. But is still not strong enough 🤷🏻‍♀️😫 13mo
mcctrish She‘s going to get that back bone if it kills her @TheBookHippie 🤣🤣 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish Hopefully SOON. 13mo
mollyrotondo She‘s annoying. She knows Nick is a jerk so don‘t FaceTime him. He barges in don‘t invite him to your room. When he says I‘m her fiancé speak up and say ex fiancé. And don‘t go to the dinner your clueless landlord invited him to. You don‘t have to spend time with your ex fiancé who is clearly abusive! 13mo

AmyG People and their exes. Getting over them and moving on. Growing up and away from people towards who might just be best. (edited) 13mo
vlwelser This was also weird. Too many characters for sure. 13mo
IndoorDame She certainly upped the drama with Maggie and Polly but I‘m not sure this book needed any more drama. And Madeline herself didn‘t seem very interesting so I could‘ve done without… 13mo
See All 14 Comments
Sargar114 For a book with so many wonderful characters there are quite a few awful ones as well!!! I guess that‘s life. Madeleine was despicable. I hope she gets together with Nick and goes away as well!!! 13mo

TheBookHippie @Sargar114 oh yes pair those two up and buhbye.. 🤣👀 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa yes pair them up!! 13mo
mcctrish The comment madeleine made to Maggie “it‘s funny, you‘ve gotten older but everything else looks the same” WHO SAYS THAT ?! I know Maggie made the dig about her looking fit first, but if you‘re worried your old boyfriend‘s mother hates you maybe don‘t lead with that 13mo

Sarah
Good grief?
So that‘s the daughter…any clue what that‘s about??

IndoorDame Maggie hinted that she tried to be controlling about something when she should have sat back and admitted Sarah was an adult entitled to live her own life, but that seems pretty out of character for Maggie so I‘m super curious… 13mo
AmyG Sarah sure is mad at Maggie. Hopefully we find out what happened. As a mother, I get that it‘s hard to accept some of the decisions your kids make. I find alot of this book to be about…acceptance of people for what/ who they are they are. 13mo
vlwelser Why did this character even come over? She's extra but not in a good way. 13mo

Nick announcing himself as Laura‘s fiancé
Excuse me
That was all sooo abusive and Lauras mother?! Unreal.
Why on earth is Nick still even there?
I threw the book.
So your thoughts?
And those pictures on his camera?!?!? Creepy.

IndoorDame 😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬I‘m listening to the audiobook so I can‘t actually throw the phone but I can‘t decide which of those two makes my blood boil more! I think Nick, but mom‘s running a close second! 13mo
AmyG Nick wants what HE wants. End of discussion. Not a fan AT ALL. And her mother wants the same. I know many who just see the world through their own lens and want things/ people to be what they want them to be. 13mo
vlwelser So creepy. I'm glad this got a book throwing. 13mo
See All 13 Comments
Sargar114 Nick = 🤮. Completely abusive behavior. It seems like Laura is aware of it but doesn‘t want to seem like the “bad guy” when “everyone loves” Nick. Just needs to go. 13mo
Karisa I can‘t believe she let him inside! @IndoorDame Exactly! Laura‘s mom and Nick are both just horrible. As Sargar put 🤮 13mo
Larkken Yes! All of the 🤮🤮🤮 13mo
mcctrish This was another instance when I was mad at Maggie. Laura said Nick did not need to come to dinner, she didn‘t want him in LA at all and Maggie was all “it‘s a party!” Like read the room Maggie! I appreciated Laura‘s but of backstory to how/when they met and how Nick has super duper social charisma and she liked being in his tailwinds BUT she‘s waffling with her reactions to him and making herself look like the party pooper ( but I get it ) 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 🤮🤮🤮 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish SAME 😡 13mo
mcctrish Nick is a mansplaining patronizing arse ( this section has brought out some serious reactions in me 🤣) (edited) 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish SO ABUSIVE!!! 13mo
DebinHawaii @mcctrish I agree to the reactions! I got SO angry when he made little negative comments & belittled her in front of her friends! 🤬😡 13mo
mollyrotondo @mcctrish yes! I totally agree that Maggie was the worst friend in this moment. No one should be inviting Nick along and welcoming him. Laura has made it clear she is not his fiancé and said she doesn‘t want him there so ignore him and move on. Don‘t invite him to dinner Maggie! It just makes no sense. How is that any better than what Laura‘s mom has been doing? And Nick is complete garbage. 13mo

Polly

Polly‘s opinion of dating
And the guy at the bar?
Um…
Hmmm
Asher?

What do you think of Polly?

IndoorDame I appreciate her take on dating getting some representation. It‘s not the stereotypical attitude but I totally know women who think similar things 13mo
AmyG Polly tells it as is it is. I like her alot. She is amvery kind and strong woman. She gets bored easily with men as she needs one to keep her interest…has to meet the right guy. Is it Asher???? 13mo
See All 19 Comments
vlwelser I love her. It seems like she may have made a choice to be sober. I could be totally wrong. Was she just messing with that dude? No idea. 13mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I like her too. 13mo
vlwelser I also liked what one of the characters said that she's actually a scientist and everyone is her test subject. 13mo
IndoorDame @vlwelser 😂 that was a fabulous line! 13mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser @IndoorDame it‘s probably true… 13mo
AmyG @vlwelser Yes…what a great line. 13mo
Sargar114 That scene with the guy in the bar was hilarious. I totally think Polly was just messing with him. Polly is delightful. I appreciate her perspective on dating, but I do wonder if it‘s because she was hurt in the past and doesn‘t want to make herself vulnerable again. I wonder if she likes Asher as well but doesn‘t want to ruin the friendship or her relationship with Maggie. We seemed to have stepped away from her perspective. 13mo
Karisa @vlwelser 👩‍🔬 It‘s perfect! Polly‘s a great character. 😂 I loved when Maggie‘s daughter said Polly was dressed as a cartoon and she just wanted to know which one. 🤣 13mo
mcctrish @Karisa I loved that too! And I think @Sargar114 you are right about not wanting to mess with her space. Asher will need to play a long game with her and running right to his phone to message Madeline is not cool 13mo
Sargar114 @mcctrish I‘m guessing him messaging Madeline made @TheBookHippie throw the book as well 😂 13mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 SERIOUSLY WTF 😵‍💫😝 13mo
mcctrish I‘m with you @TheBookHippie this was a peak book throwing section 13mo
DebinHawaii Polly is the best! I love her take on things. I liked how she stayed for the confrontation with Maggie, Asher & Sarah & then called Asher on his behavior. 😆 13mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii Polly is my fav!!!! 13mo
Read4life I‘m definitely ready for Polly‘s book. @vlwelser I think you may be right about her decision. Something has her holding back with Asher & she doesn‘t seem like one to do that. 13mo

Nina like her any better or is it worse ?
How about her boyfriend ?
The trivia night…

AmyG Nina is just a sweet, quirky woman. I‘ve always liked her. 13mo
vlwelser I like Nina. But she seems somewhat overbearing from another character's perspective. It could just be Laura being a bit shy and unconfident. 13mo
Sargar114 I‘m okay with Nina. I think she was a bit rough when we first “met” her in this story, but softens as you get to know her…and that feels true to life. 13mo
See All 8 Comments
mcctrish I like Nina, I wonder if not knowing her from her book makes getting to know her/understand her harder? She also isn‘t babying Laura and Laura needs that 👏🏻👏🏻 13mo
DebinHawaii I like Nina & think she is good for Laura & love that Laura pushes back with her a bit. I enjoy their banter! 13mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I think that‘s accurate . 13mo
Read4life I really like Nina. I think I like her more having read the first book than I would if I hadn‘t. But I still would have liked her. She‘s unapologetically herself & I love it. 13mo

Maggie slipped therapist names under door..
Upset about her daughter and strangely the earthquake…
What‘s going on with Maggie???

AmyG I am curious if something happened between her and her daughter….OR….does she just not like her daughter as a person, and vice versa. I feel there is more there. 13mo
vlwelser This was chaos. I have no idea what's happening with her. 13mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG ooooo that‘s brilliant. I wonder. 13mo
See All 27 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser SAME 🤪 13mo
IndoorDame @AmyG oooh, it hadn‘t occurred to me that they maybe just dislike each other. I love it! That‘s a perspective authors tend to shy away from with mother daughter relationships, but I don‘t know why cause it‘s perfectly true to life 13mo
Sargar114 I feel like something may have happened. And maybe with all 3 of them by the sounds of it. But it‘s interesting that the daughter came over after the earthquake so I wonder if Maggie historically doesn‘t like that and her daughter knew that so she came out to try and extend an olive branch. 13mo
Karisa @Sargar114 I got the feeling it was to check on her mom after the earthquake too. The daughter mentioned something about embarrassing Maggie in front of her beloved garden club? I thought it was a reference to a past event. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They definitely seem to have different world views. A bit of a theme with Laura and her mom too (and Nina)… Just re-rewatched Everything Everywhere All at Once—beautifully captured mother/daughter struggles in that. 13mo
Sargar114 @Karisa good connection between the various mom relationships and how they are similar! 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa oh yes, that. 13mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 possibly …. Hmmm. 13mo
mcctrish I felt unsettled by how Maggie told Laura about putting the list of therapists under her door. It felt like a semi invasion of privacy or public declaration that Laura needs help. On the one hand no one should be concerned about going to a therapist but nobody knows Laura‘s story really ( or needs to) so it could be any number of things and Laura obviously needs support to deal with her accident and her mother and effin‘ Nick. This stuck out 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish glad to not be alone in being conflicted about that move.. 13mo
mcctrish So then I wondered, is it just me 🙋🏻‍♀️ or did Maggie do something like this to Sarah? S feels mom always takes Asher‘s side, Asher feels Sarah never supports Maggie. Sounds like family where everyone SWEARS they have explained their position and no one has listened to the actual words coming out of the persons mouth 13mo
mcctrish @Karisa we watching EEAO recently and watching that mother- daughter relationship play out is so heartbreaking, as an outsider you see both sides and when you are on the inside it‘s just awful 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish people have to hear it -communication is nothing without comprehension of what is and has been said… (edited) 13mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish The inside has such nuance… 13mo
Sargar114 @mcctrish in Maggie‘s defense she did just say she slid her a list of names at first. But I agree she was pretty candid when Laura followed up and that seemed strange. But you‘re also right that people shouldn‘t care about needing therapy. 13mo
mcctrish @TheBookHippie listening is an art and many people in this story aren‘t doing so well ( except Bob) 13mo
mcctrish @Sargar114 you are right and Laura needs to realize she needs to talk to someone, she has a lot going on and needs the support to sort it 13mo
Karisa @mcctrish Yes, love that movie so much 13mo
Karisa @mcctrish @TheBookHippie I didn‘t think about that (Maggie‘s casual outing of Laura‘s problems) but now that you mention it… Maybe just saying everyone has issues and normalizing it? 13mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa Yes. Everyone always …and it just felt a little like “I know what you need” when Laura clearly knows about who and what Maggie does and can ask for the info… it goes with the don‘t give help to someone not asking even IF they could should use it.. it‘s not up to Maggie. @mcctrish (edited) 13mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie Yeah, I hear you a little too much and things talked about between the two of them are not the whole house‘s business. @mcctrish 13mo
Sargar114 @Karisa knowing Maggie as we do, I‘m guessing normalizing mental health care was more her intent 13mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I‘m sure that was her intent -I think it‘s impact many have been different and maybe this may explain problem with daughter. Someone‘s intent can be pure but their impact can still do harm. I think that‘s the biggest thing I learned in my 20s about racism -if impact is harmful intent doesn‘t matter. It‘s hard to rectify self with. I fail at this often intent/impact .. in all things 😫😵‍💫 13mo
DebinHawaii Yes to all of this -both the relationship, I feel like it was ongoing but something g finally broke it. Maybe as @Karisa said the garden club incident? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also was bugged by Maggie being public about the list but I think Maggie doesn‘t think about it like that. She seems to like having a support system around & thinks most things are the business of the whole house. 13mo
mollyrotondo I also thought it was over exposing Laura by mentioning the therapy in front of Bob. It‘s not like Bob and Laura know each other sooo well that Laura would want to let him in on her mental health plan. I also don‘t understand the feud between Maggie and her daughter. It seems sort of flat. 13mo

Bob. What do you think of him after learning more?

AmyG He just seems like a kind, decent guy. He likes his gardening and sports and I think he just wants someone who likes him…for him. He is so unsure of himself….he also needs a “cheerleader”…which seems to be Laura. (edited) 13mo
vlwelser Team Bob 100% 13mo
IndoorDame He seems sweet if maybe a little boringly “perfect”. Though I was totally into his public garden space initiative, so I‘m hoping for hidden depths 13mo
See All 11 Comments
Sargar114 I agree @IndoorDame he‘s kinda too “perfect” and it can get a bit overdone, but it‘s okay for the story so I‘m on board. 13mo
Karisa Sunflower Bob! 👏👏👏He‘s very down to earth (sorry, just couldn‘t resist). 😅 13mo
mcctrish @Karisa I saw this and said “sunflower Bob” 💛💛 he‘s the best and a bit nerdy and I‘m cool with it 13mo
Karisa @mcctrish 🌻💛💐 13mo

Bob
Laura
Will it ever happen 😝🙄

“Anything is interesting when it‘s explain by someone who cares about it…”

Fun watching them “flirt” or annoying troupe?

AmyG I think it will happen. I hope it happens! I am being patient. 13mo
vlwelser They're cute. But it's definitely drawn out a bit. 13mo
IndoorDame @vlwelser agreed. I‘m rooting for them, but ready for them to get on with it 13mo
See All 11 Comments
Sargar114 I‘m finding it fun to watch develop. I could see how it could be annoying, but since I care about the characters and so far removed from the beginnings of relationships in my own life, I‘m enjoying it. I think it will happen by the end but better it happens when they‘re not already living together. 13mo
Karisa @AmyG That‘s where I‘m at too. They are so comfortable together. The enjoyable, quirky characters around them helps with the waiting. 13mo
mcctrish I‘m completely okay with how Laura and Bob are playing out 13mo
Read4life Well said @Karisa . I think I‘d feel like it was too drawn out if it didn‘t have so many great characters around them. 13mo
mollyrotondo It‘s way too drawn out for me. It‘s a lot of romance waiting games and not enough personal growth. I also really hate all the sports bonding. That‘s great they have that in common but I find it super irritating. The writing seems super unnatural in those parts. 13mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo the sports thing was like they were 15 years old or I do not get it or both 🤣😵‍💫 I dunno it‘s clumsy 🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie maybe that‘s why it‘s irritating to me: it‘s too juvenile. They do sound like they are 15 years old 😂 but exactly I could just not be getting it. But I do think it‘s written very clumsy. I certainly want them together but if they are going to act like this then I don‘t need to be a witness to them getting together 😂 13mo

On we read… hopefully more Polly 🤣🧡✊🏼
Maybe some more story background about Maggie!
Chapters 23-32 this week!
Are you still enjoying it??

Happy Sunday !!!
🧡I thank ya for Bookclubbing it with me🧡

AmyG I am absolutely enjoying this book! 14mo
IndoorDame Definitely still enjoying it! Looking forward to the next section! 14mo
mcctrish Totally loving it 🥰 looking forward to so many things maybe happening 14mo

vlwelser I love this book. I'm looking forward to reading more of it. Maybe later today. (I have some Chloe to read first.) 14mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser me too lots of reading and research today… 14mo
Larkken I liked this! Looking forward to the rest of the convos 🥰 had to finish it as it was a library loan so hopefully I‘m getting the timeline right… 14mo
Karisa I‘m enjoying it too. Warm, light reads are great! It‘s a good counterbalance to my book set in Syria for #foodandlit I‘m betting we‘ll hear more about the Maggie and her daughter dynamic and Polly/Angus will get closer. Unless Waxman is saving those for sequels… 14mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa she‘s been teasing a Polly book👀 14mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie I‘d read that book! 🙋🏻‍♀️ 14mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa oh it would go right on our schedule !!!! 14mo
DebinHawaii Yes, I am enjoying it. I‘m in a state where I need either light & humorous or mystery/thriller right now—nothing too sad or heavy, so it is working for me. 💜 14mo
DebinHawaii @Karisa @TheBookHippie Yay to a Polly book! 🎉💯 14mo
Sargar114 This book is such a delight to read. I am very much enjoying wing back in this world! 14mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 it is so much zen. 14mo
julieclair I am loving this book! Great pick! (Unless Laura and Bob don‘t get together. Then I will have a totally different opinion. 😉) 14mo
mollyrotondo I am not loving this one as much as I loved Nina. I feel disconnected from most of the characters except Polly 😂 i thought I really knew Nina by this point in her book but I don‘t feel connected to Laura in the same way. I understand her car fear but feel far away from her in every other way. There‘s also way more romance novel vibes in this one than in Nina‘s story. But I‘d definitely be up for a Polly book or Maggie book 😂 13mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I have thrown the book once okay fine twice. 👀😅🤐 13mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie 😂 I‘m glad I‘m not alone. The Nick this is beyond irritating and I‘m sure I‘ll get more and more frustrated by him. And the constant image issues get on my nerves. She puts on a bathing suit and it‘s like a 90s teen movie when everyone is shocked when the girl takes off her glasses 🙄 13mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I feel like it‘s YA 🤷🏻‍♀️ or romance 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m not liking it. 😵‍💫🤣🤪😝😅 13mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie I enjoyed Nina‘s book a lot more lol 13mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo same. Really enjoyed Nina. However not enjoying Nina in this book😵‍💫😝 13mo

Okay it‘s a lot of people intertwined😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫
I could look back at Nina‘s book -but I just don‘t care.
Are you keeping up or ignoring it?

Omg tulips 🤣🤣😅😂😵‍💫😵‍💫can‘t escape them

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania

Bottlebrush trees I love too.

AmyG I feel that Nina‘s story is irrelevant at this point. I am happy it‘s a stand alone book. If one likes this and hasn‘t read Nina Hill, they can do so. 14mo
IndoorDame I haven‘t looked back. I may reread Nina‘s book eventually just for the sake of it, but it won‘t be because I‘m reading this. 14mo
mcctrish I read Nina‘s book just long enough ago that I‘m like “wait, I should know these people right?!” I don‘t need to reread it, I know what I know and I have 100 literal books piled around my house I haven‘t read ( if not more) 14mo
See All 11 Comments
vlwelser So many people..... 14mo
LaraReads Haven‘t read Nina‘s book, so I‘m just letting all these names wash over me. So many! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 14mo
TheBookHippie @LaraReads I read it and I‘m just ignoring them all🤣👀 14mo
DebinHawaii Yeah, I don‘t know that I‘ll go back & read it as there are too many others to read, but it does make me wonder who we have met before that I am not quite remembering! 🤔 14mo
Sargar114 I agree you don‘t need to know there references. It also kinda helps not keeping up since it is from Laura‘s perspective mostly and she doesn‘t really know it anyway, so you sometimes share the feeling of being lost lol 14mo
julieclair I haven‘t read Nina‘s book, so I haven‘t met any of these people before! 14mo
mollyrotondo @Sargar114 agreed! I‘m reading this as if I‘m Laura 😂 I don‘t remember all these people. I remember the bookstore people at that‘s it. I‘m just ignoring it because we don‘t even really see these people who are being name dropped. But I love all the gardening talk and wish this book came with photographs 😂 13mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo my thoughts exactly! Show me the pictures!! 13mo

Trivia practice at Nina‘s thoughts ?
So. Nina?
Is Nina the same for you ? (if you‘ve read her book..)
What did you think of all the L names 🤣

IndoorDame Nina seems so much more intense and aggressive when we don‘t get her internal perspective. I would not be friends with this version of Nina, I think she‘d stress me out. 14mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I had the same exact thoughts. Yikes. 14mo
mcctrish I thought this scene with Nina and the trivia meetup made Nina more like her book version. I‘m happy she‘s popping in and I can‘t wait for trivia night 14mo
See All 18 Comments
vlwelser Trivia night will be the true test. She does seem aggressive but that's Laura's perspective. I hate all the L names. This fucks with my brain. 14mo
Larkken I really liked the first book. This Nina is confusing me - but then I‘m remembering the trivia night scenes in the first book now as maybe not being her best… 14mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken I think you‘re right!!! That makes total sense! 14mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser right ? 😵‍💫 14mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish me either!!! Drama drama. 14mo
Karisa I feel like this section softened Nina‘s edges a bit but I still did find her more likeable in her book. I‘m glad she‘s invited Laura into the trivia group. It gives her another way to branch out 14mo
Karisa I‘m looking forward to trivia night scenes. Probably because I want to see if I‘d know the answers 🤓 14mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I think the same!!! 14mo
DebinHawaii Yes, trivia night will be interesting. I agree @IndoorDame I think Nina‘s quirkiness & personality & general awkwardness were softened by reading her internal perspectives. I think in certain moods I‘d want to hang out with her though & as I am competitive (although not Nina level) with trivia, I find that humorous. 14mo
Sargar114 @Karisa I agree, she was much less intense this section. The L names were silly but felt true to the quirkiness of the book so I was okay with it. 14mo
julieclair I have not read Nina‘s book yet, but meeting her in this book, she is much more intense than I imagined. 14mo
julieclair Oh my gosh. I want to live in these rooms! 📚📚📚📚📚 14mo
TheBookHippie @julieclair meeeee tooo! 14mo
Catsandbooks I haven't read Nina but I actually like her. Ik she's intense but I just see her as inexcusably herself 13mo
mollyrotondo This scene was better for Nina. The whole book so far has portrayed her as being so one note and annoying. Even Bob said at one point that Nina makes him feel dumb. This scene softened her a bit by just simply giving her more to say than just one line trivia points. I loved Nina in her book so it‘s disappointing that she isn‘t lovable in this book. 13mo

Maggie talking with Laura Laura‘s opinion of therapy …
What do you think about Maggie?
Thoughts ?
Lauras mom sending the box..

📸how I picture Maggie - I think 🙃

AmyG I like Maggie. She wants to help but it‘s her business, therapy, so she knows how to approach Laura. 14mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I love that part of her. 14mo
IndoorDame I love Maggie! I want to know more about her story!!! And I like her willingness to dive in and help Laura since a lot of therapists try so hard to separate their professional and personal lives. 14mo
See All 12 Comments
mcctrish I love Maggie and I think your pics are perfect. I want to know her story. We started watching Shrinking on AppleTV recently and I picture Maggie being part of their circle 🤣 14mo
vlwelser Maggie is great. I also think the box from the mother seemed well intentioned. 14mo
Larkken I am also on team Maggie! 14mo
Karisa @mcctrish I was just watching that yesterday! Maggie could totally work in their office. Maybe be a love interest for Harrison Ford…. 😂 That‘s LA too—good connection! 14mo
mcctrish Oh @Karisa it‘s all coming together 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 14mo
DebinHawaii Maggie is wonderful. I am still wondering about the rift with her daughter & what caused it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 14mo
Sargar114 I love Maggie and her willingness to help 14mo
julieclair I think it‘s wonderful that Laura ended up in Maggie‘s house. Maggie is just the right person to get her talking and starting on the road to healing. 14mo
mollyrotondo I love Maggie. She is just want Laura needs to help nudge her into therapy. I really want a whole book on Maggie lol. And these pictures are beautiful! I definitely picture Maggie like this! 13mo

THIS is how I‘m picturing Bob.. feel free to share your ideas and tag me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😅🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway -what do we think of Bob?

AmyG I am not sure I picture him like that but….love the guy. He is just so sweet and oblivious about his looks which is endearing. (edited) 14mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I‘m sure he doesn‘t 🤣 I couldn‘t find exactly what I wanted and I‘m snowed in 🤣🤣🤣 so I picked this😱🙃 14mo
IndoorDame I do like his total attentiveness to Laura and his willingness to be in the moment. I‘m rooting for them to get together. But I find the idea that he‘s oblivious to his looks unlikely given his dating history and the area he‘s living in. 14mo
See All 28 Comments
mcctrish I like the sunflower Bob the best! Maybe Bob is oblivious to his looks because they don‘t make someone worthy of love, actions do. His failed romances just make he feel less worthy 14mo
vlwelser I love him. He's so pretty. But has a hard time communicating. He seems to be ok with Laura though. 14mo
AmyG @vlwelser I just feel he isn‘t very confident. @TheBookHippie I sort of pictured him as a Hugh Dancy (when he was young). 14mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish I like the sunflower Bob the best too! 😆 14mo
LaraReads @mcctrish now he shall forever be known as sunflower Bob in my head! 🤣🌻💁🏻‍♂️ 14mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 🌻🌻🌻 you are probably right! 14mo
Larkken @vlwelser this made me chortle. Damning through faint praise, maybe? 14mo
vlwelser @Larkken I think that's a Friends reference. The young people use it quite a lot. 14mo
Larkken @vlwelser ohhhh oh well 💀😆 14mo
vlwelser @Larkken still questioning whether it came from Friends since no one that uses it was alive when that was on. 14mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser ♥️♥️♥️ 14mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG oh that‘s a good one! 14mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser that friends is the favorite of a bunch of high school girls here just blows my mind. 14mo
vlwelser I loved it when I was a high school girl so I do get that part. How is it not dated and irrelevant? 14mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser it‘s peaceful they tell me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 14mo
vlwelser I do love young people. They never stop surprising me. I'm looking forward to getting a new batch of college interns this summer. 14mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I introduced them to Violet Femmes and The Cure this past week…👀 14mo
vlwelser Oh good. Now I have Violent Femmes playing in my head. 🖤❤ 14mo
DebinHawaii I am not sure how I picture Bob in my head, but Sunflower Bob works for me… 😉 14mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii the sunflower is quite the popular!! 14mo
Sargar114 I was picturing darker hair for some reason, I had Tim Rozon in Schitts Creek in my head. But Sunflower Bob definitely works. 14mo
julieclair I‘m on Team Sunflower Bob. 🌻 14mo
Catsandbooks I like any of these versions of Bob 😉 13mo
mollyrotondo I like sunflower Bob too. You guys are the best! Lol but Bob is very sweet and needs to develop more confidence! 13mo

Laura & Bob
Basketball
Gardening
Car riding
Denny‘s
Claw game pink cat
Lots of similarities
Bob hmmmm are they going to couple up?

So Laura‘s PTSD…
What do you think of Laura ?

AmyG They had better become a couple. Maggie seems to be on track to help Laura with her ptsd. I feel that this house and everyone in it…will help her to heal. (edited) 14mo
IndoorDame I hope Laura decides to get help for her PTSD! I think she‘s finally found a supportive environment and is poised to really heal if she‘s open to that. 14mo
mcctrish @IndoorDame I think you are so right with her being poised to heal. I want Laura to stay in the house until she feels strong and then she can move out, not because of school 14mo
See All 18 Comments
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I had those same thoughts. Stay. Heal. Rest. 14mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I hope she can heal here. 14mo
vlwelser I hope Laura gets help. But I think these people are good for her. She just needs some confidence. Not just but it will help. 14mo
LaraReads @mcctrish yes, me too! Another move is too stressful right now! 14mo
Larkken I enjoyed the claw game digression! I forgot about that. When we were traveling for a while my friend group and I used to try to get something from every claw game we saw. Some were def more generous than others! 14mo
Karisa @mcctrish Yes! Hoping she stays. I wonder what the commute would be like? School could provide her with the therapist she needs. Universities these days are so much better at providing support for mental health. Maggie‘s nudging will also help but paying for sessions out of pocket seems daunting. (edited) 14mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa AH that was on my list to figure out the commute! 14mo
DebinHawaii Yes, I hope she stays & that she gets the help she needs for the PTSD. I like that she beat Bob at basketball & he was fine with it because I feel like her ex would not be. The claw game—I suck so badly at it! I think I get too impatient! 🤣 14mo
Sargar114 I feel like they couple up once she moves out. I can‘t imagine she does the commute once she starts school. But I think she‘s found a “family” already out in CA 💙 14mo
julieclair @IndoorDame You said it perfectly! And I do hope she is ready to heal. She deserves a happier and more grounded life. 14mo
Catsandbooks I think her and Bob are good for each other! 13mo
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii I also suck terribly at the claw game 😂 I‘ve never once played a generous claw game machine 😂 13mo
mollyrotondo I like Laura and Bob together. They need to stop being so hesitant with one another though! 13mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I won the claw game once… it was a grand day! 13mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie I think my brother has won me something from a claw game but that‘s as close as I‘ve gotten to a win 😂 13mo

Then high school: The Confessions …
Polly theatre
Laura jock nerd
Anna Art nerd
Maggie stoners !!
So
You?
Me 4.25 GPA -detention every damn day for my opinion or being dresscoded 👀✊🏼

AmyG I was so shy in high school. I didn‘t really come out of that until college. 14mo
IndoorDame I didn‘t really have a group in high school, but I definitely had friends who identified as stoners, art nerds, theater kids… 14mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I had those too but mostly my friends in detention. 👀 which were stoners art nerds theater kids and nonconformist ✊🏼 14mo

mcctrish I didn‘t play sports or an instrument, those were the main after school clubs. I wasn‘t on student council either. I took art all through school and ballet outside of school. And I swam but not on a team. I don‘t think I‘m a joiner. Or a group person. I was late everyday and never made it to home room for announcements and O Canada. I was always in the caf with the low achievers 🤣🤣 my grades were good, which is why the vp was not impressed 14mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 🤣👀 well we could have been friends then. 14mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG ♥️🙃 14mo
vlwelser Jock nerd for sure. 14mo
mcctrish ❤️❤️ 14mo
LaraReads The quiet smart girl. That‘s literally what people wrote in my yearbook, “you are so quite.” Coworkers & friends laugh about it because I‘m kinda loud. But only when I get going. I‘m perfectly happy not talking at all! I had 3 best friends who I could do anything (getting up to no good) or nothing (lounging in my bedroom) with & be so happy. I didn‘t really bother with the rest of the school. 14mo
LaraReads @AmyG same! 14mo
TheBookHippie @LaraReads 🤣😵‍💫 my best friends all went to public school I saw them at the roller rink every Friday and Saturday. 🛼🛼🛼 14mo
LaraReads @TheBookHippie man, the roller rink. Ours was called the Skate-A-Rena. Miss those days. The best! 14mo
TheBookHippie @LaraReads my dad owned the local roller rink for 31 years. 🛼 it was the best way to grow up. 14mo
LaraReads @TheBookHippie that is so awesome! 😃 14mo
Larkken @LaraReads everyone thought I was smart and quiet too. And I was in drama so the combo always seemed to confuse ppl. 14mo
Karisa @IndoorDame I‘m with you here. I had my work friends, my church friends, my smart kid friends (many of whom were jocks but not me), and my party friends. I happily drifted between them only realizing near senior year that about half were older. So senior year, I had my bike shop friends. They liked to make prank calls and cussed like sailors 😅 14mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 that‘s the best! 14mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie The days before caller ID were glorious for bored small town kids 😂 14mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa this and ding dong ditch it and kick the can… 14mo
DebinHawaii I didn‘t have a group. I was quiet & had a small circle of friends & was a reader & in journalism & took AP English & History, but wasn‘t great in all subjects. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 14mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii my son is like that history and English IB (international baccalaureate) 14mo
Sargar114 I am Laura to a tee! Jock-nerd, so never really fit in with either group. 14mo
julieclair I loved high school! I was part of a group of about 30-40 kids who took honors/AP classes, and were leaders and joiners. There was always something fun going on. 14mo
Catsandbooks I was a teacher's pet. Took tons of AP classes. I had a great group of friends. I was friendly with pretty much everyone. 13mo
mollyrotondo I was in the band wing all the time lol more music geek than band geek since I hated playing in public. I wrote music for the band to play. They were my closest friends lol I was also an honor and AP student. So definite cool kid music nerd 😂 I always say now that I used to be a cool person once 😂 13mo

Polly & Laura & swimming and talking about healing timelines ..so sad she thinks she should be healed.
Something is so wrong about that.
Also I think back home people were misusing her experience against her. You?
Thoughts ?

I like Polly more Polly please…

AmyG I feel that Laura didn‘t get the support she needed from those close to her…back home. That now, from these people she barely knows, she may get that and the “found” family she needs. Polly is awesome! 14mo
IndoorDame Yes! I totally got the vibe that her NY “support system” was using this to keep her down for some reason… And I hate her mother for not believing in mental health. She‘s a phd, she should know better! 14mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame UGH. Just made me sick. 14mo
See All 22 Comments
TheBookHippie @AmyG I‘m hoping so. She‘s so young. I hope they help her heal. 14mo
mcctrish I LOVE that the secret garden in this book has a swimming pool! Laura‘s family is awful. I agree with @AmyG this new group will show Laura what ‘family‘ can be and help her with her recovery. I totally get that it can be frustrating with the healing process/timeline, the greatest gift you can give yourself/someone else is the time needed to get to the other side. It doesn‘t ever go away but it can feel so much lighter 14mo
vlwelser I loved that Polly was like that's yours now. We all need a Polly for an extra confidence boost. 14mo
Karisa @vlwelser @TheBookHippie Yes! Polly is so awesome. She fully embraced Laura right from the start. How many people go years in a new place before finding a support system? Laura lucked out with Polly/Maggie (edited) 14mo
LaraReads Polly is so great. There is nothing better than having a true cheerleader in your corner. Laura needs that! 14mo
LaraReads @Karisa totally agree! 14mo
TheBookHippie @LaraReads I agree I like her so much. 14mo
Larkken I like how the author is able to write a variety of really quirky people and highlight how their differences help them to be friends. Very soothing, this highlighting of differences in a way that makes them all feel normal. 14mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken I think this is my favorite thing about this book. 14mo
Larkken @TheBookHippie yes! I just want them to get on with the romantic tension so I can get back to the cast as a whole 😆 14mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken 💯💯💯 14mo
DebinHawaii Polly is the best. I hope she gets a book or more time in this one. I hate the pressure so often given to “get over” things especially grief & trauma. The lack of support from Laura‘s family is angering. I agree @IndoorDame her mother & the rest of her family should know better! 😡 (edited) 14mo
Sargar114 We all need a Polly in our life. I wonder if Laura “thought” she was healed because she‘s never had the amount of support she has experienced in her short time in California. 14mo
julieclair I love those nifty swimsuits and hairstyles in the vintage ad! 14mo
julieclair @Larkken Yes! These quirky characters all feel like real people. I can totally see myself being friends with them. 14mo
TheBookHippie @julieclair I would wear all those suits so cute! 14mo
julieclair @TheBookHippie I want the blue gingham check 2-piece and the sailor-type one-piece. 😀 14mo
Catsandbooks I adore Polly! I hope if the author writes another book in this universe it's about Polly 13mo
mollyrotondo Polly is the best friend for a woman who is long overdue for a true friend who actually listens to them and supports them. Laura‘s connections in NY do seem to keep her down or at least don‘t care about her. I will say I don‘t like how the book portrays East coast people as stuck up and self absorbed v. the West coast characters who seem more warm hearted. I‘m from the East coast 😂 but I‘m glad Laura has finally found true friends. 13mo

AmyG Laura and Bob better get together or I will be seriously mad. 14mo
IndoorDame Love that this is a real shop! I‘ve only been to LA once, so I always appreciate local color when I read about it to help me figure out the current vibe of the city. 14mo
mcctrish Any sandwich shop that serves up cornichons on the side is my kind of sandwich shop. Another reason LA is on my travel plans. I wonder if the Waffle is still open ( I know the pandemic killed even the tried and true places) it had the best chickens and waffles. I‘d like Bob and Laura to go there 💛 14mo

TheBookHippie @mcctrish I think this sandwich shop just closed😵‍💫😭. We stay in Koreatown and the food there 🤤🤤🤤🤤. 14mo
vlwelser You've got me looking up food recipes for all of the books. Not just reading together. 14mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 14mo
Karisa The sandwiches sounded delicious! @AmyG The Laura/Bob thing has got to happen. With this much set up, it‘d be cruel for it not to 😂 14mo
Larkken @mcctrish are cornichons really considered that spicy? I eat them by the handful, haha 14mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken 🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn‘t think so either? 14mo
mcctrish @Larkken maybe if your go to pickle is bread and butter? 14mo
DebinHawaii You can‘t beat a good sandwich shop! I I would have happily consumed both of the ones they ordered. Heartbreaking that it closed… 😣 It is so hard for the small restaurants especially these days. 14mo
DebinHawaii @AmyG Agree! 😉 14mo
Larkken @mcctrish maybe! I love all pickles 😂 14mo
Sargar114 LA as a character in this book is delightful. @TheBookHippie there is a YT or IG account called “LA in a minute” that does all sorts of historical tidbits about the LA area, and it‘s so fun. He did a series on foods invented in the Los Angeles area. 14mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 ooooo thx!! 14mo
mcctrish @Larkken me too! 14mo
julieclair Sandwiches are one of my favorite foods! And Laura and Bob absolutely have to get together. It will be too disappointing if they don‘t. 14mo
Catsandbooks This was a cute scene. And I love a good sandwich! 13mo
mollyrotondo I‘m sad this sandwich place closed. I love when real city spots are mentioned in a book. This would have been a good place to go on an LA visit. 13mo
