A wealthy family shrouded in scandal; a detective tasked with solving an impossible cold case; and a woman with a dark past collide in Hannah Morrissey's stunning new Black Harbor mystery, The Widowmaker. Ever since business mogul Clive Reynolds disappeared twenty years ago, the name Reynolds has become synonymous with murder and mystery. And now, lured by a cryptic note, down-on-her-luck photographer Morgan Mori returns home to Black Harbor and into the web of their family secrets and double lives. The same night she photographs the Reynolds holiday get-together, Morgan becomes witness to a homicide of a cop that triggers the discovery of a long-buried clue. This could finally be the thing to crack open the chilling cold case, and Investigator Ryan Hudson has a chance to prove himself as lead detective. If only he could stop letting his need to solve his partner's recent murder distract him. But as Morgan exposes her own dark demons, could her sordid history be the key to unlocking more than one mystery?

This was a dark thriller that just happened to take place over Christmas. Check the CW in this one, it was well crafted but the child sexual abuse was hard to get through. The pace was fast and the mystery was solid. #wintergames #holiday Word Search - 2,410 pt Wintery read - 25pt, Participation 1pt Total: 2,436 @Bookworm54 @AmandaBlaze @tdrosebud @Coueriamb @Sarahreadstoomuch @RedxoHearts @Airykah13 @katiekat311

Such a good book!!! I was not expecting the ending of the book. It set up for something much different in my opinion. I didn‘t realize this was book 2 in a series until I finished reading it so I guess now I‘ll happily go back and find book one to read it. I‘m sure it‘s just as good as this one

“In her thirty-one years on this planet—most of them spent here in this frozen purgatory—Morgan had learned that some people were born purely and inherently evil. And Black Harbor was their breeding ground.”

Second in a series, this is a follow up to Hello, Transcriber. This is a whodunit of the finest caliber. I thought as the story unrolled that I had figured out who was behind all the bedlam, and I was still wrong. We are back in Black Harbor, this time with Morgan, a wispy girl, trying to keep her mess of a life together after suffering years of abuse. A late night decision to stop for gas puts her in the center the homicide of a cop.

This mystery/thriller is more tedious and oppressively violent than clever or exciting. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#the-widowmaker

Publication is expected December 6.

Kangaj1 I agree. I really liked Hello, Transcriber, but I abandoned this halfway through. 2y

I‘ll admit I was a bit lost at first as I hadn‘t read the first in this series, but caught on eventually. There‘s a lot to unpack here…the murder of a police officer, the witness, Morgan (who has turned into a vigilante after being horrifically abused as a child), Hudson, a police investigator out to solve his friend‘s murder. Greed, jealousy, vengeance…it‘s got it all. Other than being a bit lost occasionally (my fault), I liked it (especially 🔻

robinb the denouement which had chills, thrills, and a twist or two even though it was over-the-top in believability at times. TW: physical and sexual abuse/torture. 3.5/5⭐️ 2y
