Read for #ChloeGongReadalong I didn‘t immediately lock into the story & characters in this trilogy like I did with Gong‘s These Violent Delights & Foul Lady Fortune series & I‘m barely acquainted with Shakespeare‘s Anthony & Cleopatra but the 2nd half of the book kicked it up a notch & it was a wild Hunger Game-ish ride to a BIG ending cliffhanger. Color me hooked now & impatiently waiting for book 2.

I‘m not familiar with Shakespeare‘s Antony & Cleopatra, so I have no idea how this retelling compares. At times I was bogged down by the worldbuilding, but the characters & the action was very well written. & THAT ENDING! Can‘t wait to see what is to come!

She succumbs to her massive attraction.
Honestly I loved this, I was laughing too.
To fight not being in love was written well. 👀♥️

Also the body thing is a bit 😵‍💫 to me..however it‘s the Qi or person you‘re in love with, was an interesting under the plot vibe.

Massively glad it wasn‘t Anton who betrayed her.

Poor ENO!! 😭😭😭

5feet.of.fury When I read that in Chapter 14 & Calla implied she didn‘t “jump out” I thought for some reason that it was Calla‘s qi but she took a different body. So then I was totally freaking out at the reveal & flashback! Now I get why she doesn‘t jump, Anton thinks the real Calla is gone, but…who knows. Interested in how that plays out 3mo

Catsandbooks So I've been thinking how did no one notice she was different when she stole Calla's body because the eye color always matches the person whose qi it is. Like she's always knows it's Anton because of his eyes. So did the girl before have the same color of Calla's eyes or is she something else and somehow Calla's eye color remained? And if they did have the same color or a close color, I thought only royals had that color? 3mo

Catsandbooks I think August more saw her as a pawn for a larger person pulling the strings so he eliminated her as a way to disrupt things. I was surprised at the ease in which he killed her though. Definitely thought there would have been more of a fight. 3mo

Catsandbooks I like the idea of qi and any magic. I do feel like Gong is trying to do a little too much in this book though. There's so much going on, it feels a bit overwhelming and confusing, but maybe that's how we're supposed to feel? Maybe like the cities themselves we're supposed to feel like everything is a bit of a mess lol 3mo

Catsandbooks Lots of world building to keep track of! The jumping is interesting and I'm just waiting for Calla to start doing it again since she hasn't in so long. Also remember this book is Gong's first adult novel so it will most likely be darker than the violent delights saga 3mo

Meshell1313 I always feel like I should be re reading the Shakespeare play before or while I read her books. I think I remember things but then I look them up to compare anyway or to look up a character. I love making the comparisons. 3mo
