The Gospel According to the New World
The Gospel According to the New World | MARYSE. CONDE
10 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
One Easter Sunday, Madame Ballandra puts her hands together and exclaims: 'A miracle!' Baby Pascal is strikingly beautiful, brown in complexion, with grey-green eyes like the sea. But where does he come from? Is he really the child of God? So goes the rumour, and many signs throughout his life will cause this theory to gain ground. From journey to journey and from one community to another, Pascal sets off in search of his origins, trying to understand the meaning of his mission. Will he be able to change the fate of humanity? And what will the New World Gospel reveal? For all its beauty, vivacity, humour, and power, Maryse Conde's latest novel is above all a work of combat. Lucid and full of conviction, Conde attests that solidarity and love remain our most extraordinary and lifesaving forces.

#Guadeloupe #ReadingtheAmericas2023 I should have started with a different book by Condé as her latest and last book is a parody of the life of Jesus who is born a bastard in Guadeloupe. I did not have the background for it either in her voice or humor. The telling comes very much from the verbal story sharing tradition and there are persistent sneers at history and religion written by colonials but it was slow and pointless to my ears.

Currey I should add that this book was short listed for the International Booker Prize this year, so clearly others did hear her voice 1y
BarbaraBB I didn‘t like this one at all unfortunately 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
rockpools Yup. I just did not ‘get‘ it. Felt I was majorly missing the point. 1y

I made it half way, but I didn't care enough to continue. I thought there were moments of such beautiful, brilliant writing, but just not enough meat to the book. It was ostensibly about Pascal, but he was such a blank space of a person, there was nothing to grab onto. Things happened around or to him, but with no central core to it, it all just felt like a random series of circumstances.

Panpan

Not my kind of book. A man is in search of his origins and we follow him along his journey. The book touches upon themes as colonization and race but mostly it‘s about the people he meets. Not for me.

Cinfhen Gorgeous photo! So sorry the book was a pan! Should I even bother?!?? 2y
sarahbarnes Ugh, bummer. Echoing @cinfhen - should I bother to try it? 2y

AnneCecilie Sorry about the book, but I love the picture of Versailles 2y
squirrelbrain That‘s a shame but loving your pic! ❤️ 🇫🇷 2y
BookwormM Still waiting for my library hold bet it doesn‘t arrive before the winner is announced 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @sarahbarnes I‘m not sure. It is well written but I just don‘t like stories about people on a journey, meeting new people and insights in every chapter, just to move on in the next one. 2y
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie @squirrelbrain Thank you, it‘s a beautiful place. Work though, so it was an efficient & short visit! 2y
BarbaraBB @BookwormM It‘s not as good as Still Born! 2y
Cinfhen I hear that! I don‘t think I‘d enjoy the experience either. I might read it later on but for now I‘m passing on Gospel. 2y
Librarybelle Beautiful pic! 2y
sarahbarnes Hmmm. Thanks for your thoughts on this one. I‘ll see if I feel motivated to try it before it‘s due back at the library. 2y
TheKidUpstairs I bailed about half way through, seeing your review helps confirm I made the right choice! I thought there were moments of such beautiful, brilliant writing, but just not enough meat to the book. It was ostensibly about Pascal, but he was just such a blank space of a person, there was nothing to grab onto. Things happened around or to him, but with no central core to it, it all just felt like a random series of circumstances. 2y
BarbaraBB @TheKidUpstairs I feel relieved you felt the same. I was wondering if it was just me but you say it so well: there was too little Pascal to hold on to. Thanks! 2y

My hold for the tagged, from the International Booker Shortlist, came in just in time for #TitlesandTunes.

And you just can't have an #IslandVibe without the Marleys. Damian Jr Gong Marley's Welcome to Jamrock is a perfect summer party album, and one of my favourite tracks is All Night: https://youtu.be/VJMTVD9rHDQ

@Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB I chose the same book and am glad you add a Marley! 2y
Cinfhen Woohoo 🙌🏻 I so agree with you….we NEED all the Marleys 😎 2y

Pickpick

In 2006, I first fell in love with Condé! ‘I, Tituba' remains an engrossing 'addition' to Miller's 'The Crucible'. I‘ve taught 'Crossing the Mangrove' 7 times and each time I‘ve discovered something wonderful and engrossing! Condé has been dubbed the 'Grand Dame of Caribbean Literature' and the 'Queen of Caribbean storytelling' for a very good reason! This latest work, translated and transcribed by her husband Richard Philcox, is simply stunning!

BarbaraBB I am about to start this one and your review makes me eager to! 2y
