Middletide: A Novel | Sarah Crouch
15 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
In this gripping and intensely atmospheric debut, disquiet descends on a small town after the suspicious death of a beautiful young doctor, with all clues pointing to the reclusive young man who abandoned the community in chase of big city dreams but returned for the first love he left behind. Perfect for fans of All Good People Here and Where the Crawdads Sing One peaceful morning, in the small, Puget Sound town of Point Orchards, the lifeless body of Dr. Erin Landry is found hanging from a tree on the property of prodigal son and failed writer, Elijah Leith. Sheriff Jim Godbouts initial investigation points to an obvious suicide, but upon closer inspection, there seem to be clues of foul play when he discovers that the circumstances of the beautiful doctors death were ripped straight from the pages of Elijah Leiths own novel. Out of money and motivation, thirty-three-year-old Elijah returns to his empty childhood home to lick the wounds of his futile writing career. Hungry for purpose, he throws himself into restoring the ramshackle cabin his father left behind and rekindling his relationship with Nakita, the extraordinary girl from the nearby reservation whom he betrayed but was never able to forget. As the town of Point Orchards turns against him, Elijah must fight for his innocence against an unexpected foe who is close and cunning enough to flawlessly frame him for murder in this scintillating literary thriller that seeks to uncover a case of love, loss, and revenge.

Good but not great. This book didn't wow me like I had hoped it would. It was interesting though and I will look forward to giving this author another try when she writes another book. This was her debut.

It‘s basically a hybrid of Where the Crawdads sing and Gone girl but not as well written. Was it just me that had the solution half way through? There was only one obvious solution. And expensive for a kindle book. Might make a good tv movie but for better value and way better writing, buy the other two instead.

What an impressive debut novel! This literary thriller, told in 2 timelines, mostly in the 1990s in a small Puget Sound town, is a genuine delight to read! Elijah longed to escape the town, but when his career flounders, he returns in this homecoming/love story wrapped in the mystery of the hanged beautiful town doctor. Brief chapters keep up the pacing & there are surprising plot points, too! Would make for a great book club choice!

Ruthiella Sounds great! 3mo

TorieStorieS @Ruthiella This was a five-star read for me for sure! I was a little hesitant because of the early comparison to WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING, but I really enjoyed this!! 3mo

This was a great debut mystery novel and it sucked me in from the very first page. I believe that Sarah Crouch is a fantastic new voice in the mystery genre and I definitely look forward to more novels by her. This novel followed Elijah Leith from 1973 when leaves the small town he grew up in only to return and then be accused of a horrible murder years later in 1994. Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me an advance copy!

A failed writer returns to his small hometown only to be accused in the mysterious death of a resident lawyer. As a former flame and his close friends uncover the truth, more secrets and lies are exposed in this mystery that is compared to Where the Crawdads Sings meets The Girl on the Traun.

This was definitely a so-so novel for me. A very slow build, so I kind of had to push through the first half. I didn't quite guess the ending and parts of it were pretty implausible as it was revealed. Overall, it was a decent read.

This one‘s a really nice, slow meditation on home and belonging first, and a mystery second. Although the main plot catalyst is a murder, I largely read “Middletide” as an examination of human nature and our relationships with the spaces we inhabit.

Do you ever read a book and it makes you wonder if maybe a whole genre just isn‘t for you anymore? For me, that was Middletide, a literary thriller about a failed author returning to his PNW hometown. When the dead body of the town‘s doctor is found on his isolated property, Elijah finds himself under scrutiny. This book is a love letter to the Pacific Northwest, beautifully bringing its scenery to life, but that‘s where my praise ends. ⬇️

LeafingThroughLife Elijah, who should be compelling and sympathetic, is, at best, wooden. At worst, he is annoyingly selfish, eagerly leaving behind the love of his life with unkept promises and then returning to badger her back into a relationship too quickly after the loss of her husband. Beyond that, the leading evidence, sloppy police work and simplistic resolution to inadequately developed tension tested my suspension of disbelief beyond its breaking point. ⬇️ 4mo
LeafingThroughLife I definitely feel like I‘m in the minority with this unpopular opinion, so maybe it‘s the book or maybe…thrillers just aren‘t for me anymore? 🤔 So, yeah. There‘s my April #bookspin - a quick, if unsatisfying, read. 4mo
Sace I appreciate your review so please don‘t be upset if I choose to spend this comment gushing over the soft and squishy and cuddly blanket in the background. 😊 4mo

TheAromaofBooks I feel like the thriller genre has become somewhat oversaturated. It's hard to find ones that give that really KAPOW-mind-blown moment. But beyond that, I'm happy to find ones that just have good pacing and resolutions that actually make sense, even if they don't have THE TWIST - even that seems to be becoming more of a challenge. 4mo
LeafingThroughLife @Sace Haha! I love it! One of my good friends makes a baby blanket for almost every baby shower she has to go to. After many years of me whining that I‘d never get to have one because I neither am a baby (ok, this is questionable maybe…. 🤣) nor do I have a baby, she made me this beauty! So it‘s my “baby blanket” and it‘s the best! 😁 4mo
LeafingThroughLife @TheAromaofBooks Yeah, right? I can live without a mind blowing twist if that means the rest of the book can generally have a narrative thread that doesn‘t inspire the eye rolling of disbelief. 🙄 I think this one was trying to do/be too much in a quest to not be “just” a thriller and it suffered for it. 4mo
Sace @TheAromaofBooks I don‘t read a lot of thrillers but I would agree with you about over saturation. 4mo
Sace @LeafingThroughLife I‘m glad you have a baby blanket to snuggle in. 😊 4mo

What are your #BOTM picks?
I am, as usual the past few months, disappointed.
All the prediction sites got me excited, but they were wrong. 😞 I did end up thinking Middletide could be interesting. That way I got Annie Bot as an add on, which I really want, but missed when it came out.

DestinyMorna I chose THE PARADISE PROBLEM for my main pick and added on PART OF YOUR WORLD. #BOTM 4mo
