The Wild Hunt is stirring - and the dragons are finally waking from their long sleep... Cat Barahal was the only survivor of the flood that took her parents. Raised by her extended family, she and her cousin, Bee, are unaware of the dangers that threaten them both. Though they are in beginning of the Industrial Age, magic - and the power of the Cold Mages - still hold sway. Now, betrayed by her family and forced to marry a powerful Cold Mage, Cat will be drawn into a labyrinth of politics. There she will learn the full ruthlessness of the rule of the Cold Mages. What do the Cold Mages want from her? And who will help Cat in her struggle against them?

I enjoyed this despite the fact that it is a very unique mashup that the author calls Afro-Celtic post-Roman Ice Punk Regency. I mean there are very disparate things happening but they all seem to work. I also really love the relationship Bea and Cat have with each other. There was also a bit of a cliffy at the end so I'm curious to see how everything plays out.

It‘s my favorite day of the month which means all of my RNG picks are decided and I can plan my May TBR. The three library books are hold overs from last month, the tagged is my #CalibreRoulette, and my #BookSpin picks are The Hobbit and Early Riser. So thankful it‘s not back to back chunksters again!

I finished COLD MAGIC and ate lettuce wraps! The book had some really good bits and also some dull patches. I‘m glad I reread it before diving into COLD FIRE because I‘d forgotten basically everything except the broadest outlines of Elliott‘s alternate world.

The lettuce wraps were awesome. My tofu came out with the perfect level of umami, and my once-disappointing peanut sauce improved tenfold for having been frozen. #audiocooking

Nutmegnc Peanut sauce is the holy grail in my house! We had the perfect recipe...then it disappeared and we‘ve spent 10 years trying to recreate it!! 3y
xicanti @Nutmegnc oh no! I hope you get it back someday. 3y

Today‘s #audiocooking session left me with a big stack of crepes! I filled three of them with mushrooms & bleu cheese for a most excellent supper.

I spent a lot of today with COLD MAGIC, which is a reread I‘d mostly forgotten. So far, there‘ve been bits I was hard into and bits that kind of bored me. Thankfully, my crepe-making took me into a cool bit. Hopefully it stays good from here.

Come-read-with-me Wow! You are amazing - this looks absolutely delicious! 3y
xicanti @Come-read-with-me it‘s one of my favourite meals! I first had crepes with this filling at a kiosk in Grand Central Station in NYC. Now I make it for myself as often as I can. 3y

A #coldday read featuring cold magic. I‘m about 3/4 of the way through it. to be candid, Kate Elliott needs a better editor. There‘s a lot of interesting ideas in here, but the writing needs work. The only reason I haven‘t bailed is because my dad gave it & the sequel to me and has read them as well. #fantasy

(All temps in Celsius, Fahrenheit means nothing to me...)

1. -20 feels like -31, going up to -17 feels like -28
2. -10 or so in winter, 20-25 with a breeze in summer
3. 19
4. All weather! It is lovely to curl up inside with a warm drink and a good book when it's stormy or dreary out though
5. I don't really read by season, but tagged one of my fave books that is winter weather-y

I enjoyed the journey. It felt a little drawn out but that didn‘t bother me because it was full of surprises. Not shocks, just -oh! didn‘t see that coming!- moments. I have to try and find the next one now!

When I was browsing in Powell‘s, this book was in my basket and an older gentleman walked by and said, “that‘s a great series!” So of course I bought it. 😂 I love recommendations from other readers!

Owlizabeth This *is* a great series, I read it ages and ages ago and remember loving it! 5y

The beginning was so slow & really hard to get into, but the second half really got me interested, so I‘m excited to see where book 2 takes it!

A history lesson. "Listen, my father had written. Listen to hear if they are telling the truth or only part of the truth, for that is the lesson of history...Ask yourself if part of the story is being withheld by design or ignorance"

Day 24 #readingwomenmonth - favourite series. The Spiritwalker trilogy by Kate Elliott is definitely one of my favourite series. Alt Earth fantasy, Napoleonic era, with magic and the intelligent descendents of dinosaurs and much much awesomeness.

Cat is definitely gryffindor, but I think Bee is #ravenclaw

I tagged book 1 of the Spiritwalker trilogy, but the pic comes from The Secret Journal of Beatrice Hassi Barahal

#siblings for #aprilbookshowers day 10. If you want to be really technical, Cat and Bee are cousins, but seeing as they grew up together for nearly all of their lives, I'm gonna go ahead and call them sisters, not to mention Cat's brother Rory who shows up later in the series. #diversereads #YA #fantasy

tea.n.books Also shown is Labyrinth Lost, which has a great dynamic between the trio of sisters, Alex, Lula, and Rose. Even though the sisters aren't often in-scene for ~plot reasons~ Alex as narrator still shows their bond and they do some great sisterly growing over the course of the novel. 7y

This book is so frustrating! I absolutely loved the worldbuilding, the plot, and most of the characters. But it drove me nuts how all the characters had to explain things to each other--even to the extent of Cat explaining things to herself! It also used my biggest story pet peeve (one I have difficulty explaining) near the end. I'd like to read the rest of the series to find out what happens, but I know I won't.

UGH THESE PEOPLE EXPLAIN STUFF TO EACH OTHER WAY TOO MUCH. But I love the worldbuilding!

I'm enjoying this book, but I'm sure I would be enjoying it even more if it didn't have so much as-you-know-Bob. I'm hoping at least some of this excessive exposition is lies. I think at least one piece is.

Clare-Dragonfly Specifically, this whole "eldest Hassi Barahal daughter" thing. After the third repetition, I'm sure that it's a lie and that Cat's aunt and uncle are sacrificing her to save their own daughter. Talk about cold. 7y

Had trouble getting fully into it at first. Found it more engaging in the second novel.
