How to Become the Dark Lord (and Die Trying)
How to Become the Dark Lord (and Die Trying) | Django Wexler
A hilarious fantasy adventure in which a young woman stuck in a time loop tires of trying to defend the kingdom from the Dark Lord and instead decides to become the Dark Lord herself. Davi isn't your average zoomer. For starters, she's somehow become trapped in a fantasy world - and not one full of rainbows and unicorns, but one packed with all manner of terrifying monsters and deadly magic. Proper Lord of the Rings stuff. And, for reasons unknown, the humans of the Kingdom look to her for protection against the Dark Lord. To make matters worse, Davi's stuck in a time loop. So every time she fails to defeat the Dark Lord (which is every time) she has to start over. But Davi has a plan. What if instead of trying to defeat the Dark Lord . . . she becomes the Dark Lord instead?

I thought I'd be fine after reading the content warnings, but it just wasn't for me. Too many passages in the first few chapters squicked me out and I had to bail.

julesG I had a similar experience. 1mo

This is very amusing. I have every intention of reading the next book. It's like the main character is stuck in WoW or some other fantasy RPG. I love that.

Davi has spent the last 1000 years living & dying trying to save the fantasy realm she finds herself in. Eventually, she decides to throw caution to the wind & be the bad guy. Things can‘t get any worse, right?

Very fun! A raunchy, violent take on your typical portal fantasy story. Davi‘s humor & snark in the middle of a truly unimaginable situation brings a lot of lightness to the story. & I loved the world building! & the cliffhanger!🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

This was a bit of a silly read but I ultimately enjoyed it. Davi can‘t die. Or she dies but then comes back to life. She‘s lived for 1000 years. She‘s told she‘s the savior of humanity. The last time she wakes up after dying she decides on a different path.

Lots of magic, orcs and other magical creatures and a journey through the wilderness. First in a series.

📚📚📚📚 A fun romp D&D style story featuring a wide range of likeable characters. Dark Lord Davi is winging it and we‘re along for the ride. Anticipating Book 2 in this duology.

Dark comedy time loop fantasy as narrated by Deadpool‘s twin sister, essentially. After trying a million times over thousands of years to save the humans, Davi switches teams and attempts to become the Dark Lord, nemesis of humankind, instead. Raunchy, and surprisingly moving in parts. Quite a lot of fun, apart from all the dying.

This is a very funny, raunchy, epic fantasy that feels like a D&D campaign or an MMO (think World of Warcraft). The protagonist is just a great character. She levels using her experience and quirky charm to work on achieving her goal of becoming the next Dark Lord. If you are looking for a fun fantasy read, I highly recommend! 5⭐️

From the title alone, I thought this looked like a fun, cheeky read, but it ended up being a bit of a mixed bag for me. I really liked some of the characters as well as the world it‘s set in, but the humor quickly becomes stale and the main character is so sex obsessed that it got old fast. Also, not nearly as much happens as I would have expected for a book this length.

I can‘t wait for book 2. This is a quirky, silly, fun, quick, somewhat bizarre listen! Groundhog Day type story. MC has lived many lifetimes. The story is hilarious & fun. Davi is great as the Dark Lord wannabe! There‘s brutality but it‘s dished up with a bit of humor/snarkiness. Our MC has a LGBTQ love interest that will make you smile. The cosmic horror really shows up at the end of the story in the funniest of ways. Not for everyone.

How to write a fantasy-ish computer game recap with lots of gore, sexual content/violence, self-harm/suicide from a female POV and fail at it.

Davi is the centre of her universe. Whenever she dies she respawns at the beginning of her adventure and has been doing so for over a thousand years. Yes, that would blunt the edges of any of us, but she was too blunt to be likeable.

DNF @ 22% - there was nothing that enticed me to read on.

3.5/5

After 200+ lives, Davi is tired of failing to defeat the Dark Lord on behalf of the Kingdom. She decides it's time for a new strategy. In this life, she's going to become the Dark Lord, since she'll just reset at the beginning again when she dies.

I thought this was a very fun read with a strong narrative voice, but it still created a interesting world that left me full of questions and anxiously anticipating the next book in the series.

Soubhiville Sounds like a fun premise. 🙂 9mo
