Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger
Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger | Louis Sachar
16 posts | 30 read | 3 to read
Hooray! Wayside School is Open Again! All the kids from Wayside School had to spend 243 days in horrible schools while Wayside closed to get rid of the cows (Don't ask!). Now the kids are back and the fun begins again on every floor. Miss Much has prepared a Day on the 30th floor--with dogs and cats and frogs and skunks and pigs, and an orange named Fido causing a terrible commotion. In Mrs. Drazil's class, they're throwing a coffeepot, a sack of potatoes, a pencil sharpener, and a light bulb out the window to see which hits the ground first. But the big surprise is that Mrs. Jewls is expecting a baby--but one named Cootie Face or Bucket Head--and a substitute teacher is coming--and everyone knows what that means... Something strange is going on at the already peculiar Way side School, when Mrs. Jewls leaves her students with a succession of substitute teachers. "Wayside School devotes [will] turn pages eagerly...these additional anecdote about wayside school will surely tickle the funny bones of fans"-School Library Journal

This one does not disappoint either! Be sure to read books 1 and 2 first to understand all of the details.
It is interesting to see the differences between illustration from older books compared to newer books.

30 more strange stories about the students on the thirtieth floor.

I think this is my favorite of the three that I have read.

#thoughtfulthursday @MoonWitch94 @Texreader

1. Tomatoes and watermelon
2. Keeping the Moon
3. In Hawaii, we were offered a night boat ride to see the whales...I ended up getting sea sick, took some dramamine, promptly fell asleep at a table and woke up when we were docking. So no 🥴...but I did hug a dolphin once at an aquarium, it was my nieces birthday present from me. She wants to be a marine biologist 😁🐬🦈🦈

MoonWitch94 Thanks for playing ⛵️☺️🍉 4y

Mrs. Jewls is getting fat and nobody knows why. The kids are still hilariously misunderstood. There's a Gorf running amongst them. Miss Mush saves the day. And the substitute who can read minds offends everyone frequently. Can't beat good ol' Wayside School. #throwbackreadathon @Clwojick @monalyisha

monalyisha Just the word “Gorf” makes me want to hide. 😅😱 6y
Ajessgirl Omigosh I completely forgot about this book! They were such a hit while I was growing up! 6y
vkois88 @monalyisha right??? Lol... @Ajessgirl I loved these books when I was younger. Apparently there were a couple in-between books, but I never read those. I had fun revisiting these though 6y
Ajessgirl @vkois88 I will definitely need to re-read! 6y

This is darker than I remembered! It prays upon your deepest fears: uncontrollable urges, unintentionally hurting the people you love, having your privacy invaded, not being able to speak up for yourself, being invisible, being ignored, people finding out your secrets. But it‘s also hilarious. When Sachar makes a joke, he commits. Small, ridiculous details will nonchalantly be brought up chapters later. And it ends beautifully. I actually cried.😭

Christine11 Such a cute little bunny! 😍 6y
Sresendez12 I don‘t think I ever read this one! I‘ll have to add it to my list 😀 6y

ElleSkel Someday I hope to meet Moxie. #lifegoals 6y
umbrellagirl I really want cuddle your bunny! 6y
monalyisha Spoiler alert: I guess, if I‘m being objective, the ending could be easily misinterpreted as, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Until she meets a nice man & settles down.” And, “Hey lady, have a baby!” And, “Women + Babies = Bliss.” But I honestly don‘t think it‘s as gendered as all that. I think the message is more about the promise of a clean slate: tabula rasa. (edited) 6y
monalyisha @Sresendez12 Definitely do! I kind of want to go back and read the first one now, too! 6y
monalyisha @Elle_Skeldon She‘d be honored. If you bring bananas. Otherwise, she‘d be pissed. 😜🍌🐰 6y
monalyisha @umbrellagirl She‘s a great cuddle buddy. 💖 6y
ElleSkel A girl after my own heart! Except bring me TACOS! LOL 6y
Meeko93 I love your bunny 6y
Clwojick I have to get this book 6y
Beachesnbooks I used to love this book so much! Didn't the school get overrun by cows at one point? And they threw a computer out the window? Or maybe those are in the first book 6y
monalyisha @Beachesnbooks Ha! I love how memories work! There‘s one cow in this one; Ms. Zarves on the 19th floor has it in her classroom (Ms. Zarves & the 19th floor don‘t exist). And they throw a coffee pot, a bag of potatoes, a pencil sharpener, and a lightbulb out the window! 😅 6y
Beachesnbooks 😂😂😂 Clearly it's been awhile! Lol. I do remember Ms. Zarves! 6y

It may seem “strange” to you that I chose to read a Wayside sequel for the #ThrowbackReadathon & not the original. I did so specifically for these chapters. Ms. Nogard: she has a 3rd ear on top of her head & can hear her students‘ innermost thoughts. Whatever they‘re worried about, she uses her super-hearing to find out & expose it.

*Cont‘d in comments below 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: The concept really freaked me out. I used to sit on the bus & censor my thoughts. Another kid would choose to share my seat & I‘d think something like, “What an ugly sweater!” Then, I‘d panic. Instant inner turmoil. I‘d worry that they had a third ear & could hear me (if Ms. Nogard had one, anyone could!), so I‘d immediately follow it up with, “I bet she‘s nice though!” (edited) 6y
monalyisha 2/2: It was like the Panopticon, but for ears... the Panaudicon. To this day, whenever a silly superhero quiz offers mind-reading as a power, a particular revulsion comes over me. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO KEEP SOME THINGS TO YOURSELF. I just really, really dislike hurting people‘s feelings, apparently, but am also incredibly (& quietly) judgmental. 😅 6y
larah17 As a kid I was always paranoid about the exact same thing! And then I‘d try to just focus on something like a brick wall so people couldn‘t read my mind 😂 6y

Good morning!☀️

I have to go to work again today, i.e. school. (I work at a shapeshifting library inside a school: during the day it‘s a school library: after-hours, it‘s public). I plan to finish my book before I head out, though. And today, I‘m reading during my breaks! I‘m not letting anyone or anything stand in my way! And I‘m not going to drop my lunch on the floor & spend precious time picking up millions of tiny grains of quinoa, either!😆

ElleSkel This is so great! I really wish I could participate! 6y
Libby1 This is the second time you‘ve made me laugh today, @monalyisha ! Thank you for that gift. 6y

“The bad stuff rose to the top of the brain. Even if a person was very excited about something wonderful, the person still worried about what could go wrong.”

Clwojick This was me as a kid... I would be so excited about a vacation, but I would always end up super sick the night before because I would stress out over all the “what if‘s?” 6y
monalyisha @Clwojick This is still me. ? I performed my friends‘ wedding ceremony this past summer & I thought I was going to die. I‘m doing the same for my brother & his fiancée this summer & I already to feel similarly, haha. 6y

If Ms. Zarves (& her story) reminds me of “Welcome to Night Vale”, Doctor Pickle brings to mind none but the inimitable (except in this case, apparently) Doctor Jacoby from “Twin Peaks” (with a slight NPH/Lemony Snicket twist). Am I crazy?

#ThrowbackReadathon

Purrfectpages I never read Welcome to Night Vale, but I do love Sideways Stories! 6y

I forgot about Mr. Gorf entirely but reading about him again, I swear my pulse quickened & my breathing got shallower. PRIMAL FEAR.

He uses his third nostril to steal his students‘ voices (like some sort of bizarro Ursula). When they‘re silent, he creepily tells them how “nice & quiet” they are. By twitching his nose, he can imitate any of their voices perfectly. When an adult comes to check on them, he uses this trick to lie & say they‘re safe.

Clwojick I definitely never read this one! And now I think I kind of have to. ☺️😂 6y
monalyisha @Clwojick It‘s terrifying! He also uses their voices to phone their homes & tell all of their families how much they hate them. He likes it when everyone‘s crying. It‘s legitimately twisted. I‘m kind of mad about it, haha. 6y

@Clwojick I feel like this is a snack you‘d get behind. Maybe dipped in ranch dressing? 😂

#ThrowbackReadathon

Clwojick If I had Oreos rn, I‘d try it. Without the ranch lol. 6y
Clwojick Another favourite is snap peas dipped in sweet Thai chili sauce! 🤤 6y
monalyisha @Clwojick Do you have baloney on-hand?! 🤣 And what was it, again, that you dipped in ranch? Green apples? 6y

monalyisha @clwojick I mean... snap peas are delicious. As is chili sauce. That one I think I‘d actually try. 6y
Clwojick Yes! And yes! Granny Smith 🍏 6y
Clwojick And cinnamon sprinkled on watermelon. 🍉 🤤🤤🤤 6y
monalyisha @Clwojick Watermelon‘s one of my least-favorite fruits, actually. But the cinnamon part reminds me of doing tequila shots in college! I loved them with lime & salt (I think it was the process. It was like a ritual. It spoke to the lapsed Catholic in me. 😂). Anyway, when a friend of mine came back from studying abroad, she claimed they used cinnamon & oranges as chasers instead. NOT as effective at cutting the taste, let me tell you! 6y
Clwojick 😦 I cannot even imagine what that would taste like! I am a whiskey girl, not a tequila girl! Lol (edited) 6y
SandyW I've got to say, none of this sounds appetizing. 😲 6y
monalyisha @SandyW I think it‘s okay to admit that, haha. There‘s a strong possibility that it may all be objectively revolting. 😅 6y

Sorry for my prolonged absence this afternoon! I swear I wasn‘t snoozing on the co-hosting job. I was just at work (booooo). I‘m home for the night now, though, & ready to recommit. Hi, #ThrowbackReadathon-ers! How‘s it going so far?

P.S. Please note that in this photo, I‘m using an NES game as a pillow. Comfy? Apparently.

(Bonus #throwback challenge: can anyone correctly identify the game?)

Clwojick I keep getting the side eye at work today because I mayyyy have had my phone out all day. Ahahaha woot woot! It was so hard to stay away from Litsy today.... I‘ve been so excited for the #throwbackreadathon . ❤️ 6y
Clwojick Teenage mutant ninja turtles! 6y
