Planet of the Apes
Planet of the Apes | Pierre Boulle
Before you see the movie, read the original novel! First published more than thirty-five years ago, Pierre Boulles chilling novel launched one of the greatest science fiction sagas in motion picture history, from the classic 1968 movie starring Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowell, through four sequels and two television series . . . and now the newest film adaptation directed by Tim Burton. In the not-too-distant future, three astronauts land on what appears to be a planet just like Earth, with lush forests, a temperate climate, and breathable air. But while it appears to be a paradise, nothing is what it seems. They soon discover the terrifying truth: On this world humans are savage beasts, and apes rule as their civilized masters. In an ironic novel of nonstop action and breathless intrigue, one man struggles to unlock the secret of a terrifying civilization, all the while wondering: Will he become the savior of the human race, or the final witness to its damnation? In a shocking climax that rivals that of the original movie, Boulle delivers the answer in a masterpiece of adventure, satire, and suspense.

Inspired by @The_Book_Ninja 's post, I decided to pick Planet of the Apes to while away my ironing chores. I have box sets of the classic movies & the '70s TV show, but decided to go with the OG (Original Gorilla? ?), so gun-totin' Charlie H it is!
The "shock" ending of the film is given away only by its own promotional material, & was already a scifi cliché from the cover of 100 different issues of pulp SF mags from the 40s/50s. Still a classic!

quietlycuriouskate Now I'm tempted to indulge in a "damn you all to hell!" moment of my own. Might just content myself with a recitation of Ozymandias instead. 2w
Bookwomble @quietlycuriouskate I just lived that moment with Charlton - so corny! So great! ? "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair." ? 2w
Bookwomble Wow! I forgot what a Grade A arsehole Charlton Heston's character, Taylor, is! 2w
The_Book_Ninja I think they invested less and less into the subsequent movies but growing up in the 70s it was definitely an Ape-heavy childhood. I used to love the TV series and collected the Marvel comics. The franchise was awesome for me. My son absolutely loves the new movies and keeps saying “Dad you need to watch these”. I think I‘ll binge them over Xmas…I‘ll just need to let the ironing build up 7d
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja The original franchise was good given what they could do at the time. It's ages since I watched the whole lot, but I seem to remember Conquest of the Plant if the Apes being a good one, and I think that connects with the current prequels. If you've not watched them, you need to listen to your son, and get the ironing board out! 😄 7d

I really enjoyed this. Yes, it‘s a bit dry and pompous sometimes (I wondered if it was actually an Asimov pastiche that wasn‘t quite in the right key) and Rod Stirling‘s film adaptation made artistic choices that are more authentically sci-fi, but, within the franchise that it‘s still spawning, it earns its prototypical credentials as an enthralling adventure that‘s a thoughtful, moving critique of vivisection with a fine example of a twist ending

Ruthiella Does it have the same ending as the movie? Only saw it once on TV as a kid, but it‘s a doozy when you are 12 years old or so. 2w
The_Book_Ninja @Ruthiella There is a twist but it‘s different from the movie. It‘s just not as iconic an ending 2w
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja @Ruthiella I enjoyed this book, too. I picked it up a few years ago after a re-read of PKD's A Scanner Darkly, as a cinema binge-showing of all the Apes movies to that point is part of the narrative. It's definitely different to the film, and it addresses different social issues, but still through the medium of damned dirty apes! 🐒🦍🦧 2w

Weird. The book that inspired the films doesn‘t even remotely resemble any of the film incarnations. There‘s no resemblance at all even to the original with Charleston Heston from the 1960‘s. Hollywood took the idea and came up with a different concept. There‘s no pretense of nuclear Armageddon. It is worth a read just for the surprise at how different the original is. More science fiction than post-apocalyptic.

I always had a soft spot for this franchise. The series was wonderfully terrible, the films uneven in quality, and the books fair to middling, but I can still remember the excitement I felt when I woke to see this annual at the bottom of my bed on Christmas morning 1975. Alternate histories - past, present, and future - fascinate me still. I guess what we watch and read as children leaves a massive legacy.

AmyG I remember watching this in the theater. It will always be one of my favorites from my youth. Seeing the Statue of Liberty..blew my young mind. 4y
Mistermandolin @AmyG It‘s one of the defining images of my youth. Half-buried Liberty and Taylor pounding the ground: “Damn you all to HELL...!!” 4y

This was read in a couple of hours. I've never seen the movies, and I was really curious about them. So, I read the book. It was good but really disturbing. I liked how the author used the apes as a mimic of ourselves. Don't be lazy people!

TheBookgeekFrau I grew up watching the movies; never knew there was a book! 7y
Sic_Corneille @C.Perone I have no clue if the first one is similar to the book, but the sequels are all made up, apparently. I'll watch them one day! 7y
TNbookworm Did not know there was a book either! Love all The Planet of the Apes movies☺ 7y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I have long been a fan of both the original, and later, the new Planet of the Apes movies but had never read the book that started it all. OMG!! It was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I really do not understand why they changed the original movie in the ways that they did. The story as told in the original book is so much stronger, so much more startling , and really makes you think even more!!

MemoirsForMe I totally agree! The book was sooooo good and so much better than the movies. 7y

Baby boy is home from college and we've decided to binge watch all the Planet of the Apes movies starting with the original 1968 version. We've never seen any of them. Thought I'd check the Litsy database to see if there was a book and not really surprised to find it was a book before it was a movie.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk A.) I LOVE all of these movies and B.) the book is strange. You should check it out. 7y
Andrew65 Those original ones were great movies. 7y

Two things:
1. I've never read this book and I probably should.
2. War for the Planet of the Apes was a satisfying end to the latest trilogy and Andy Serkis deserves all the awards for breathing life into Caesar.

vivastory Saw this yesterday. A completely satisfying conclusion. I loved it. 7y
dariazeoli @vivastory I was so anxious through the whole movie worrying about everyone's fates! I'd love a rewatch now that I know what happens ❤️ 7y

This one is #surprising in a number of ways.

Surprise! It's by the French author of Bridge Over the River Kwai.

Surprise! There are two twist endings and neither one is anything like the original movie.

Surprise! You and I live a world where this book inspired nine (NINE!!!) major motion pictures, two different television shows, and so many novels and comics.

Surprise! Some of them are really really good. #aprilamazingreads @jess.how

howjessicareads Noel (my husband) keeps trying to convince me the movies are good... but.... 😂🙈 8y

#octphotochallenge #betterinthemovie

I think Charlton Heston was a better astronaut in the movie than the character in the book.

LibrarianRyan I had no idea this was a book. Cool 8y
the_hibernator @LibrarianRyan yeah, and it's pretty good, if a bit dated. Check it out if you like unique dystopias. 8y

Really enjoyed these first few sentences before falling immediately asleep on top of this book last night. Ok wait. No. I don't remember any of this. Back to word one!

For the #bookriot #readharder challenge, I chose this post-apocalyptic classic. I've been a big fan of all the films, but never got around to the book. How did it compare? Oh my! I was riveted from beginning to end. Some similarities, some major differences and some very cool twists and turns. If you've "gone ape" over this franchise, you're gonna love this book! And yes, I'll be spending the weekend binge-watching these monkeys. ???
