Dear Emma
Dear Emma | Katie Heaney
Harriet, the author of her college newspaper's pseudonymous student advice column "Dear Emma," is great at telling others what to do, dispensing wisdom for the lovelorn and lonely on her Midwestern campus. Somehow, though, she can't take her own advice, especially after Keith, the guy she's dating, blows her off completely. When Harriet discovers that Keith has started seeing the beautiful and intimidating Remy, she wants to hate her. But she can't help warming to Remy, who soon writes to "Dear Emma" asking for romantic advice. Now Harriet has the perfect opportunity to take revenge on the person who broke her heart. But as she begins to doubt her own motivations and presumably faultless guidance, she's forced to question how much she really knows about love, friendship and well-meaning advice.

Pickpick

This was between a so-so and a pick, because none of the characters were likeable and nothing really happened. I'm going with a pick because despite how annoying the main character was, I found myself relating to her in some ways, and overall I found it entertaining...but I wouldn't exactly recommend it 😆 I added it to my TBR a while ago after loving the authors first book, and I'm glad I was finally able to cross it off my list 🤗

BookishMarginalia I like the cover 🤓 3y

Bailedbailed

In the third chapter and I‘m close to bailing. Harriet is awful and stalker-ish and I‘ve yet to see any reason to care about her situation.

Update: I just skimmed through some intervening chapters to discover Harriet is the same booze-soaked, poor-decision-making mess throughout; then read the ending and learned I don‘t care.

Changed from blurb to review, and officially DNFed my #bookspin for August.

staci.reads It doesn't get any better 🙄 I stuck with it to the end and regretted it 🤨 4y
ravenlee @staci.reads I‘m sorry for that. I regret the half hour I invested in it, but I‘m glad that was all. I guess they can‘t all be winners. 4y

Have you ever had a friend go on and on telling you about their day or about an old relationship, while you keep wanting to say "and you're telling me this because...?" Well, that's this book in a nutshell. A college junior dates a guy for a couple weeks, then he stops responding to her texts. She then obsesses over his social media accounts & whines to her friends. While there are relatable moments, the characters and story are one-dimensional.

Holy Cr*p! I've officially listened to over 100 audiobooks this year. 📚📚📚📚 This has been one seriously awesome year for CRUSHING all my reading goals. ☺️

Also, for all of those of you that were wondering..... No, I don't ever sleep. And yes, I do listen to them all on double speed.😉

sprainedbrain I can‘t do double speed, but I seem to almost always be at 1.5x. When I listen to regular speed now it just seems so....sloooooooow. 😂 6y
Clwojick @sprainedbrain Nolan always laughs whenever I have my phone on speaker. He calls it my chipmunk books. 6y
croberts51 I should keep track of mine like that! I‘ve read about 6 since thanksgiving week. I commute two hours a day so I could finish 2 a week just from driving. Regular speed though 😁 6y
Eggs Congratulations! Like the way you track them in your lovely journal 📓😍😍 6y
ReadingRover As far as audiobooks go Let‘s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson is one of my favorites. It‘s laugh out loud funny. Also Strange the Dreamer is magical 🦋 if you haven‘t read it yet. American Gods is another one that‘s a full cast production that I loved. 6y
dariazeoli Double speed for the win! 🙌🏻 Nice Job! 6y

BeckyandBooks What do you use to listen to audiobooks? 6y
Clwojick @BeckyB I use Hoopla and Libby 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes Double speed?! How do you stand that! It always seems so weird...maybe I'd get used to it if I really tried it... 6y
Clwojick @Natasha.C.Barnes I honestly can't even listen to it at 1.5 speed anymore. It seems soooooo slow to me. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Clwojick Whooooaaaa. I just tried my current read at 1.25x and it was ok but some phrases are so fast and clipped. It's not that I don't think the books could be read faster bc they toooootally can be, it just bothers me that the cadence is unnatural. Either way, I started thinking maybe 2x was just a phrase you used and you maybe actually did 1.5x but now that I know differently my mind is boggled! 😳 6y
Clwojick @Natasha.C.Barnes yeah, with Hoopla the fastest it goes it's 1.5 and sometimes I feel like it's soooo slow compared to the 2x with Libby. The only time it gets to be too much is when I have my headphones in before bed. I'll drift off for a second, and then I'm completely lost in the story lol. 6y

Oof, I usually LOVE literary adaptions of classics in any form but this book was just too juvenile and lacked proper substance. A college advice columnist version of Emma that had so much promise and fell short. I hate giving books bad ratings but I struggled to finish this one.

SusanInTiburon I picked this up at the bookstore when I was in a troubled mood and wanted something that tasted like pink frosting. It hit the spot! I didn't even connect it with Austen, which is hilarious, because my husband and I were listening to Emma during our commute at the time. 8y
whelanmaria @SusanInTiburon I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I understand what you mean about books hitting the spot completely!! 8y
SusanInTiburon @whelanmaria And I can totally understand this one NOT hitting the literary adaptation spot. 🍭 8y

Can't go wrong with an Austen-inspired story! I think this one is relatable for anyone who's been to college - it brought back fun (and not so fun) memories for me. It was generally light-hearted, but there were some more serious undertones as well. It's a quick read and was rather entertaining.
