Half a Lifelong Romance
Half a Lifelong Romance | Eileen Chang
19 posts | 11 read | 27 to read
"Shanghai, 1930s. Shen Shijun, a young engineer, has fallen in love with his colleague, the beautiful Gu Manzhen. He is determined to resist his family's efforts to match him with his wealthy cousin so that he can marry the woman he truly loves. But dark circumstances--a lustful brother-in-law, a treacherous sister, a family secret--force the two young lovers apart. As Manzhen and Shijun go on their separate paths, they lose track of one another, and their lives become filled with feints and schemes, missed connections and tragic misunderstandings. At every turn, societal expectations seem to thwart their prospects for happiness. Still, Manzhen and Shijun dare to hold out hope--however slim--that they might one day meet again. A glamorous, wrenching tale set against the glittering backdrop of an extraordinary city, Half a Lifelong Romance is a beloved classic from one of the essential writers of twentieth-century China"--

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The story of star-crossed lovers in 1930s Shanghai. This isn‘t a story of politics or war, though. It‘s focus is relationships, between lovers, friends, and family. Very well done.

5/5 🌟

This an incredibly sad and heartbreaking love story that will stay with me for a very long time. The ending was so unbelievably heart wrenching. Definitely one of my new favourites!

Maybe quarantine-itis impacted this, who knows. Overall I did enjoy following the main characters‘ friendships and romance, and their emotional turmoil felt very real. But the pacing was quite slow at times with scenes that felt like tangents, and the dialogue, even among the friends, felt formal and stilted. Could be a translation thing, perhaps. Hard to say what plays a role in this bizarro world. Liked this but not a fave. 3/5 ⭐️

The thought of a daughter‘s unhappy fate could not but drive a mother to tears.

[I‘m not a mother but I know my mom would agree with this 100%.]

Happy memories quickly turn vague, while unpleasant incidents, especially those dating from childhood, stick in our minds, and rise up again for no reason we can find.

I absolutely love this cover. It‘s simple but so striking. I read a collection of Eileen Chang‘s novellas and I didn‘t enjoy it all that much, but I‘ve heard really good things about this book. I‘ve been wanting to read more translated fiction, too!

In Dec. @theboxwalla, sent me their December box. I‘ll be armchair traveling to China as I read, Half A Lifelong Romance & to India w/ Seven Sixes are Forty-Three. Both sound absolutely intriguing! I‘m especially looking forward to Chang‘s book, since they mentioned in a post, that it‘s rich w/ food descriptions, & the “lives are seamlessly woven around eating”. I‘m a foodie at heart, & love reading about feasts, afternoon teas, & celebrations.

#marchintoreading day 24: #autobuyauthors
From top left: Gene Luen Yang (comics), Eileen Chang (fiction - translated), NK Jemisin (awesome speculative fiction)
Bottom row from left: Nnedi Okorafor (also awesome speculative fiction), Yoko Ogawa (beautiful short novels - translated), Keigo Higashino (fantastic crime novels - translated), Ursula K Le Guin (classic fantasy).

Which authors do you buy/read without any hesitation?

jfalkens Not really, I have certain authors I look for but I usually check the back or goodreads before deciding unless it's a really good deal. 7y
merelybookish Great choices! I heard Gene Luen Yang speak and it was really inspiring. 7y
ScrappyMags Michael Connelly and William Kent Krueger in my mystery genre... Jennie Lawson and Jen Lancaster for my chic lit... and I've loved Chevy Stevens and Jodi Picoult too. 7y

merelybookish I would buy Zadie Smith, Alice Munro, Ali Smith and Megan Daum. For my husband, it's Neil Gaiman. 7y
Chachic I need to read more of N.K. Jemisin's books! 7y
MayJasper Terry Pratchett (comedy fantasy) is an auto buy for me as is Sebastian Faulks (serious novels). 🇬🇧📚 7y
Karkar Stephen King, John Sandford, Diana Gabaldon, Anne Rice 7y
rajithr I love Kigashino's mysteries. He resembles so much like how I thought Detective Kusanagi would be .. 7y
StefanyLC Dan Brown, Richelle Mead, Cassandra Clare anyone else I may have several of their books but I make sure the story is going to be intriguing before purchasing. 7y
LeeRHarry Khaled Hosseini, Barbara Kingsolver, Victoria Hislop and Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series - just realised that's a pretty mixed bag ! 😊 7y
Jeg I would buy Helen Garner, Elliot Pearlman, Kate Atkinson. Probably more but can't think right now. 7y
Bookwitchery Kevin Hearne, Kim Harrison, Andrew Peterson, Kathy Reichs, AD Marrow.... 7y

A selection of my #booksbyasianwriters. There a some real gems here but my favourite (and I haven't read all of them yet) is The Satanic Verses, stirring, discomfiting, transformative. #ReadJanuary

vivastory What's your favorite Rushdie? 7y
Moray_Reads @vivastory Probably Midnight's Children. Not exactly original but it was my first and it introduced me to magical realism and led me on to some other amazing authors. It was very influential in broadening my horizons as a reader ❤ 7y
vivastory @Moray_Reads I actually haven't read it yet, it'll be my next one. I've been wanting to reread "Satanic Verses" & then read "Joseph Anton." I had the enormous privilege to see him speak during the release of "Joseph Anton." One of the best readings I've ever attended. 7y

Moray_Reads @vivastory I am unbelievably jealous! Such a fearless, ambitious, challenging author. You'll love midnight's children (I hope) it forced me to read up on Indian history of which I was woefully ignorant, while I read. There's a particular passage that is so visually striking and so rhythmic I still find it breathtaking today. 7y
mklong @vivastory He is marvelous in person isn't he? I was lucky enough to have him as a guest Distinguished Professor at my alma mater so I've been able to attend several of his lectures and even speak to him a few times. I agree with @Moray_Reads that Midnight's Children is my favorite 7y
Moray_Reads Oh @mklong you're killing me! That must have been incredible. Thank goodness I have his books to console me 😉 7y
vivastory @mklong It was also one of the strangest readings I've attended as more than one audience member admitted during q & a that they'd participated in the protests against him when the fatwa was declared. They felt differently now, it was still a little shocking. 7y
mklong @vivastory Wow, what an experience. I've always felt like his situation was the canary in the coal mine, warning us of the dangers of extremism that we are only now beginning to understand 7y
vivastory @mklong Extremists seem to be encircling us. If it's not Isis it's Trump & Marine Le Pen. We're in a very dark & dangerous time. 7y
mklong @vivastory Yes, the fear of one extreme has sent people flocking to another. It is a very scary time indeed 7y

I had more books with dresses on them than I thought! Frog Music and I Woke Up Dead at the Mall are still TBR but I loved the other four. Miss Happiness and Miss Flower was something I read as a kid and was so pleased to find this new version of the cover.

MallenNC Those are pretty! I Woke Up Dead at the Mall is a title that gets my attention. 7y

Need a distraction? Travel to Shanghai in the 1930s in this story that asks, Have you missed your one chance at true love? This is quite the soap opera with spots of humor.

So much drama in this book about, you guessed it, a romance. Class differences, family disapproval and one very ugly incident threaten to tear the lovers apart. What especially wins it for me is Chang's attention to detail. An unforgettable read!
