One of my favorite lines early in the book. The first part of the novel with the childhood and background of Mary Anne was definitely my favorite portion and really sets up the rest of the story.

"Words fascinated her, the shape of the curling letters, how some, by repeating themselves more often, had importance."

Mary Anne is both pawn and player, both used and user, and she comes across as all the more real because of it. While I wouldn't say it's the best book du Maurier wrote as claimed on the cover of this edition, I always enjoy her writing and continue to slowly collect and read my way through her works.

This is good for what it is. But it isn't Rebecca.

Mary Anne was du Maurier's great great grandmother and mistress of the Duke of York. So she wrote a historical fiction novel about her life.

The more I read this, the more I came to realise that I had already read it. However, that will have been when I was very young- and probably a bit young to properly understand the story.

As the book drew on I became more frustrated with Mary Anne‘s choices as she didn‘t appear to be able to let anything go. I‘m not sure, however, that she deserved what happened to her at the end.

Recommended if you like historical ‘fiction‘

TrishB A mixture of all 😁 that was cheating wasn‘t it! I got a bit frustrated too. I like to think she was initially doing it for her children. But I also think she was addicted to being important/in the spotlight and couldn‘t let go. 5y

squirrelbrain I agree entirely @TrishB - at first she was trying to drag the family out of the slums, then once she‘d met the Duke she became too convinced of her own attraction. 5y

squirrelbrain @TrishB - I thought the portrayal of men and women was interesting. Women were hardly mentioned and if they were they were downtrodden / subservient (her Mum / Martha). The men on the other hand were of course all completely obnoxious, other than perhaps Bill. I thought Charley and (her son) George were whingey little so-and-sos, only out for what she could get them. 5y

TrishB Yes exactly! And the only way a woman could be anything was ultimately under the control of men. That was very depressing. I was actually trying to think what would you do! If you couldn‘t marry well you really were screwed....(not supposed to be a pun.....) 5y

Never heard of Mary Anne before, or seen this book. She had a full life! But such a stressful way to live. Women had so few choices (well I could start an alternative conversation on choices now!).
Wikipedia calls her a courtesan (and author) does that mean you just sleep with the aristocracy rather than the riff raff!?
What‘s you‘re thinking Helen?

squirrelbrain No reading for me today yet unfortunately, however I‘m beginning to think I‘ve read this before but many years ago. Still enjoying it though, and it‘s the same story now as then - how is it alright for men to behave in this way, but not women?! (edited) 5y

Trying to see how long I can stop outside before I start snivelling and 🤧 sneezing! Had two types of hay fever drugs but to no avail...

On a more positive note I‘m loving this book so far - interesting to try and work out how much is true and how much is ‘artistic licence‘.

Mary Anne certainly seems the only one with any brains / guile to get herself on in the world...

Just about to start Chapter 10 @TrishB - how are you getting on?

I found this to be an interesting fictionalized story of Daphne Du Maurier's great great grandmother, Mary Anne, who was a bit reminiscent of Thackeray's Becky Sharp. While not the best of Du Maurier, I've yet to read one of her works that I do not like.

CrowCAH @Texreader have you tried Frenchman's Creek? It's a lovely take of seeking adventure only to find she has it all at home. Beautiful. I might have enjoyed it cause it involved pirates 😊; a fav topic of mine, cause I'm writing a fiction book with them as characters!
