Mary Anne | Daphne Du Maurier
13 posts | 12 read | 10 to read
The highly anticipated reissue of the du Maurier classics American fans have been waiting for "Daphne du Maurier has no equal." Sunday Telegraph " Likely to rank as the author's best book." Saturday Review "This novel catches fire." New York Times She set men's hearts on fire and scandalized a country Master storyteller Daphne du Maurier evokes the rise and fall of one of her most unforgettable characters. An ambitious, stunning, and seductive young woman, Mary Anne finds the single most rewarding way to rise above her miserable cockney world: she will become the mistress to a royal duke. In doing so, she provokes a scandal that rocks Regency England. Mary Anne glitters with sex, scandal, corruption, and the privileged world of high society. Based on the true story of one of du Maurier's own distant relatives, Mary Anne's love of money and the men who spend it embroil her in risks that threaten her very existence.

One of my favorite lines early in the book. The first part of the novel with the childhood and background of Mary Anne was definitely my favorite portion and really sets up the rest of the story.

"Words fascinated her, the shape of the curling letters, how some, by repeating themselves more often, had importance."

Mary Anne is both pawn and player, both used and user, and she comes across as all the more real because of it. While I wouldn't say it's the best book du Maurier wrote as claimed on the cover of this edition, I always enjoy her writing and continue to slowly collect and read my way through her works.

Took myself out to dinner after a long day of travel for work. Decided the flight delays warranted some special treats which I savored with Du Maurier's Mary Anne.

This is good for what it is. But it isn't Rebecca.

Mary Anne was du Maurier's great great grandmother and mistress of the Duke of York. So she wrote a historical fiction novel about her life.

The more I read this, the more I came to realise that I had already read it. However, that will have been when I was very young- and probably a bit young to properly understand the story.

As the book drew on I became more frustrated with Mary Anne‘s choices as she didn‘t appear to be able to let anything go. I‘m not sure, however, that she deserved what happened to her at the end.

Recommended if you like historical ‘fiction‘

squirrelbrain @TrishB - what do you think were her reasons for doing what she did: money, the children, or for revenge? 5y
TrishB A mixture of all 😁 that was cheating wasn‘t it! I got a bit frustrated too. I like to think she was initially doing it for her children. But I also think she was addicted to being important/in the spotlight and couldn‘t let go. 5y
squirrelbrain I agree entirely @TrishB - at first she was trying to drag the family out of the slums, then once she‘d met the Duke she became too convinced of her own attraction. 5y

squirrelbrain @TrishB - I thought the portrayal of men and women was interesting. Women were hardly mentioned and if they were they were downtrodden / subservient (her Mum / Martha). The men on the other hand were of course all completely obnoxious, other than perhaps Bill. I thought Charley and (her son) George were whingey little so-and-sos, only out for what she could get them. 5y
TrishB Yes exactly! And the only way a woman could be anything was ultimately under the control of men. That was very depressing. I was actually trying to think what would you do! If you couldn‘t marry well you really were screwed....(not supposed to be a pun.....) 5y
squirrelbrain 🤣🤣 or not as the case may be...! @TrishB 5y

Never heard of Mary Anne before, or seen this book. She had a full life! But such a stressful way to live. Women had so few choices (well I could start an alternative conversation on choices now!).
Wikipedia calls her a courtesan (and author) does that mean you just sleep with the aristocracy rather than the riff raff!?
What‘s you‘re thinking Helen?

TrishB What do you think about her choices Helen and what happened to her towards the end? 5y
Lindy I like your definition of courtesan. 5y
squirrelbrain No reading for me today yet unfortunately, however I‘m beginning to think I‘ve read this before but many years ago. Still enjoying it though, and it‘s the same story now as then - how is it alright for men to behave in this way, but not women?! (edited) 5y

squirrelbrain I did tap on your spoiler, as remember roughly how it ends, but I‘ll answer in full when I‘ve finished, probably tomorrow now.... 😁 5y
TrishB @Lindy let‘s make it sound a bit nicer because it involves rich, posh people 😁 5y
TrishB @squirrelbrain feminist me is indignant! (She usually is) same old....look forward to your final thoughts 👍🏻 5y
Lova I just want to say I love this bookmark 5y
TrishB @Lova from my lovely friend @Caroline2 . I was torn between matching with a penguin or an orange one. Orange won 😁 I love matching my bookmarks. 5y
Caroline2 I‘ve started matching my bookmwarks lately too!! You‘ve had that effect on me Trish!!! 😆 5y

Trying to see how long I can stop outside before I start snivelling and 🤧 sneezing! Had two types of hay fever drugs but to no avail...

On a more positive note I‘m loving this book so far - interesting to try and work out how much is true and how much is ‘artistic licence‘.

Mary Anne certainly seems the only one with any brains / guile to get herself on in the world...

Just about to start Chapter 10 @TrishB - how are you getting on?

julesG Hay fever this year is crazy. No drug seems to work. My problem is that I start snivelling as soon as I step inside. 5y
Cathythoughts Hay fever is a curse 🙄hope it eases up. Book sounds great ! Stacked 5y
TrishB Chapter 2, part 2. I‘m still loving it. Mary Anne is awesome, I wouldn‘t like to be left with her choices, but she just gets on with it! I‘m out tonight so reading will resume tomorrow 💕👍🏻 (edited) 5y

Just started this one @TrishB - based on Chapter 1 Mary Anne is a little minx - she‘d be on Love Island for sure!

@Meaw_catlady - sorry to hear you had a bad week. Here‘s one of my neighbour‘s cats enjoying my book as much as I am....

#notmycat!

Meaw_catlady Hahah what a cutie! I had a neighbor cat when I was younger that would come over and take naps with me in my house... it was hilarious 😻! Thanks for sharing ! 🤗 5y

I found this to be an interesting fictionalized story of Daphne Du Maurier's great great grandmother, Mary Anne, who was a bit reminiscent of Thackeray's Becky Sharp. While not the best of Du Maurier, I've yet to read one of her works that I do not like.

Cozy Sunday reading and I'm looking forward to relaxing with a new DuMaurier novel. It appears that this may be based on her great great grandmother.

#slowread This took me months to finish, didn't engage me, and it was before I bailed on books, so I muscled it out. #readjanuary

Texreader I didn't care for this one either. 7y
CrowCAH @Texreader good to know I wasn't the only one! Lol 7y
Texreader I've tried a couple more of her books and they just didn't stand up to 7y
CrowCAH @Texreader have you tried Frenchman's Creek? It's a lovely take of seeking adventure only to find she has it all at home. Beautiful. I might have enjoyed it cause it involved pirates 😊; a fav topic of mine, cause I'm writing a fiction book with them as characters! 7y
