I‘m not too sure what to say about this one. A semi-autobiographical look at a young boy‘s joyful childhood growing up in Burundi, and its rapid descent into horror as war and genocide tear his world apart.
I loved the depictions of his childhood friendships and some of the writing is quite beautiful, never laboured, and evocative. And then devastating. And it leaves you with so many questions.
What a painful, illuminating, honest and heartbreaking book! Told from the perspective of a young girl, this examination of Cambodia during Pol Pot‘s murderous reign doesn‘t look away from the atrocities conducted by the Khmer Rouge. The perseverance of the author and her family are inspiring and remind the reader of the strength of the human spirit. Difficult to read but so worth it! #ReadingWomen2020 #Booked2020 #AboutGenocide #challenge
With so many well written books on the subject of WW2, there is just no reason to pick this one up. It‘s drier than 2020 is long... and I need a book that can keep my attention now more than ever!

5⭐It's an intricate retelling of the Arthurian legend - with medieval setting, mythological creatures and the Britons against the Saxons conflict, though Arthur himself is long gone. It's also an insightful story about memory, asking important questions whether it's better to remember old sorrows and grudges, letting the vicious circle of hatred and grief spin further, or resort to oblivion and forget what you once have been...Beautiful writing 💜
This week ended as an unintentional Litsy-break, but I have been so busy with new-apartment-stuff, so I‘m not complaining 😅
Luckily, I remembered to post my third quarter round up for #Booked2020.

Many good ones, my absolute favourite was; Tvillingens dagbok/The Notebook. Clever writing indeed!
A heartbreaking retelling of events by the author who, as a small child, survived the Cambodian Genocide under the dictator Pol Pot and the brutal Khmer Rouge regime. I found myself stopping the book often to do my own research on the side, because admittedly I didn‘t know much about this topic before. I can‘t believe this was only about 40 years ago when roughly 2 million people were tortured and murdered in Cambodia. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
I put this tough topic / prompt off for a while, but appreciated learning about the Armenian genocide from this solid historical fiction choice. It's set in current day and early 20th century. I like Bohjalian generally, but this time it was hard to connect to his characters. I have a few theories about why, but still liked this novel.

Well, look at that - I finished a book! 😄 Jemisin‘s world is intricate and like no other I have read about, and I‘m so glad I finally read her series. 🙌
