How to Be an Antiracist | Ibram X. Kendi

I'm joining @Andrew65 in #12Booksof2021, sharing one book every day that was our favorite read from a select month. February's face was a tough decision, but I really enjoyed reading this book. It had a lot of insights and information that was really valuable to me, and that I've been thinking about since I read it. #Nonfiction #Antiracist

Andrew65 Excellent choice. 3y

Had to reread this before the start of the new school year. Chavez's book is absolutely amazing and I am so glad that I had it in my life. #EnglishTeachers #TeachersOfLitsy #WritingWorkshop #antiracist #antiracistteaching

A short but powerful read with very scary statistics around birth and motherhood for black women in the UK. #booked2021 #antiracist

A solid addition to the #antiracist discussion with a focus on how racism affects all, specifically against white people‘s own self interest. Topics like targeted universalism were fully presented as well as how racism ties to environmental health concerns. Really well researched.

This is the book our committee chose (after much deliberation) to begin our work with teachers in the district (K-12). The hope is that it will be less threatening for some than other books we have read.

Scochrane26 My pastor bought this for her teen. Not sure if she‘s read it yet. 4y
Reggie That‘s cool ya‘ll are even doing that. 4y

There‘s a lot to process in this book. I read it slowly and had a Zoom book group discussion afterwards. I recommend both, if at all possible. DiAngelo moves readers through history, scholarly aspects, and lots of specific examples as she proves her thesis. When you finish, the problem of white fragility will be crystal clear. Now that I‘ve finished, I plan to 👇🏻

tjwill Still on my TBR! I need to get to this one soon. 4y
Scochrane26 I did a book study of this with a group. We are going to do How to be an Anti-Racist next. 4y
MicheleinPhilly My employer purchased copies of this and How to Be an Antiracist for all employees this summer. Looking forward to both. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @TrishB Yes—it is worth the time. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @tjwill If you Google, there are some intelligent opposing articles (also some not so intelligent). Still, it‘s worth the effort. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MicheleinPhilly Nice! I‘d start here and move to the other. Or possibly alternate between them ... 4y
gradcat @BarbaraTheBibliophage Nice review! I do hope that you like it, too, @squirrelbrain ... I‘ve read Kendi‘s but not this one. ♥️ 4y

Getting ready to start this one today. It‘s my Zoom book group‘s choice for August. And I‘m leading the discussion. Time to get cracking!

#Bookgroup #BLM #blacklivesmatter #whitefragility #antiracist

alisiakae I just finished this book today (working on review now!). It was also my book club‘s August selection, but I ended up missing the Zoom book club. 🤦🏻‍♀️ (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft I actually saw you were reading it. Looking forward to your review! That stinks you couldn‘t be at the book meeting. I am leading our discussion, so I have to make it! (Not until 9/3 actually) 4y
alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage I could have been there, I just completely forgot about it! It was the day I had the house inspection, Meet the Teacher Zoom, new build mtg with site supervisor, and a bunch of other things. I didn‘t catch a breath until 9 that night when I realized it was book club night but if had already ended! 😟 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft Yikes! That‘s a lot! 4y

Wow. I feel kinda shook. My world view is being challenged- that‘s a good thing. By feeling like I grew with Ibram as he questioned his racist beliefs growing up and how to become antiracist today. I was not expecting to go through his life in the book, but it ended up being a good way to really relate to him. Everybody read it. #antiracist

Changing minds is not a movement. Critiquing racism is not activism. Changing minds is not activism. An activist produces power and policy change, not mental change. If a person has no record of power or policy change, then that person is not an activist. #antiracist
