A new year & a new nonfiction challenge! #Nonfiction2026

Last year we read about people wanting a change, and fighting for it….so this year we are going to take a deep breath and remember what people fight for, the good things, the things we do not want to lose, the old friends & new acquaintances of Auld Lang Syne, our passions & loves, escape the grind & news & “touch grass”.

As always, fill these any way you choose that works for you.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Also, please feel free to combine with other challenges like #NaturaLitsy (edited) 7h

ncsufoxes I totally forgot to go back last year & do this one. Definitely one of my favorite challenges since I read a lot of NF. Adding it to my list for this year 7h
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ncsufoxes I think last year was hard for many, lots going on in real life 6h
Amiable @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Amen. I let go of a lot of challenges last year and just worked to keep my head above water. I appreciate the new board! 6h
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Amiable you are not alone and you are very welcome. We are in for the long haul, but we need to take care of ourselves and keep our spirits up too! Take care of yourself out there in this crazy world. 5h
CatLass007 Thank you! I enjoyed 2024‘s challenge so much that I‘m still reading all the prompts and my answers. Last year, not so much, although I‘m still plugging away. I‘m looking forward to 2026! 4h
rockpools This is really lovely. It‘s so easy to get bogged down in the heavy stuff. I need this sort of challenge this year - thank you 🌼 4h

Happy New Year, fellow #MonthlyNonfiction readers! What will everyone be reading in January? And do you plan to go through the Dewey classifications in numerical order, or just jump around each month?

I‘ll be reading The Ride of Her Life, by Elizabeth Letts. (600‘s)

Everyone welcome! I‘m tagging those on my 2026 list. If anyone would like to be added or deleted, please comment below.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I figure a new year is a good reason to read this one. I'll jump around as the mood strikes me. 3d
IriDas I will likely go in order because that‘s how my brain works. 😂 My first book is 002.09 HOUST The Book by Keith Houston. 3d
willaful I'm reading Floored, which is pretty interesting. 3d
See All 13 Comments
TheAromaofBooks The vast majority of my NF books are from the 600s, so this year I think I am mostly going to focus on that section. I could use as much landscaping and gardening advice as I can get here at our new house 😂 2d
TimEW @IriDas I‘m going through the DDC in order, as with you that is how my brain works. I have spent the last week looking for books. I used Open Library openlibrary.org for searching through books by the DDC numbers. What a treat that was. I looked through hundreds of books from 010 to 090 that they have listed on their web site, I had to stop and pick a book. Some of the books are offered as ebooks for borrowing or free download. 2d
TimEW So the book I picked for my January read is The Library Book. It is a compilation of library stories by various authors curated by Rebecca Gray. 2d
IriDas @TimEW Thanks for the info about the site. I don‘t think I‘ve used it to read a book before. Also, love your choice of book. Sounds interesting. 2d
TimEW @IriDas Your welcome. The OpenLibrary site is part of the Internet Archive. I think it was set up as just a lending library to stop copyright litigation. Along with Project Gutenberg it has become my go to place for books. 2d
TimEW @IriDas Just looked at a review of the book you picked and that sounds interesting to me. 2d
TimEW @TheAromaofBooks I‘ve also picked out a book from the 600s for month July called “A History of Garden Design”. Combining my love of history and my desire to create a nice garden. 2d
TheAromaofBooks @TimEW - That one sounds super interesting!! 1d
TimEW @julieclair I wanted to see what your #monthlynonfiction pick was about. I used Open Library and tried the locate function connected to the book. It sent me to search.worldcat.org and on the page for The Ride of Her Life, it listed all the libraries that had copies and retail outlets with prices and links. This is my escape, I have a new avenue to hunt down books. 🤓🎉🙏 P.S. The Ride of Her Life is going on my reading list. (edited) 1d
julieclair @TimEW I have never heard of Open Library before. Just checked it out. What a find! I can totally see myself spending lots of happy browsing time there. Thanks for sharing! 18h

#MonthlyNonfiction is back for 2026!

Read at least one nonfiction book each month. 12 nonfiction books in the year. Optional bonus prompts available for extra books and tracking by Dewey category.

Everyone welcome!

Very low key… dip in and out as your schedule allows. Read through all the Dewey categories if you‘d like… or just read whatever nonfiction books spark your interest.

Tagging those already on the 2026 list. 😀

Lauredhel Yes I'm in! 2w
peanutnine Yes definitely! Thanks for hosting again! 2w

rockpools Yes please! I fell off everything this year, but would love another go this year. Thank you! 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I would love to join!! I always try to reach 25% nonfiction and never make it, and added challenge is helpful. 2w
KT1432 Ohhh I like this!! I‘d like to join! 2w
MonicaLoves2Read I'm in for another year! 2w
jenniferw88 I'd like to join 2w
AnishaInkspill hi, I'd like to join, I liek reading nonfiction and like how this sounds easygoing, I may not be able to do all but definitely quite a few. 2w
IriDas I would like to join. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I've been updating Goodreads a bit, adding some books that I have acquired, deleting those added to my TBR because I entered a giveaway 11 years ago, eliminate duplicates, and all that jazz. I've noted some of the non- fiction books that I own and found their DDN. I have something for a majority of the categories. Now, can I stick with it? 😁 2w
Texreader This is awesome! Please include me. Not sure I can do it every month but I‘ll try. I love nonfiction 2w
TimEW Add me to the list please. I‘m a slow reader, but I like the idea of picking out a read from each category. 2w
TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! 2w
do-re-mi @julieclair, just double checking, do the non-fiction books need to be read in order, starting with Generalities? I'm not really good about sticking to strict monthly themes anymore. I guess it's the reading rebel in me. 🙂 🙂 🙂 2w
julieclair @Lauredhel @peanutnine @rockpools Yay! Glad you‘re back for another year! 😀 2w
julieclair @ChaoticMissAdventures Glad you‘re joining us! 25% nonfiction is a good goal. 2w
julieclair @KT1432 Yay! Glad you‘re joining us! 2w
julieclair @MonicaLoves2Read Yay! Glad you‘re back! 2w
julieclair @jenniferw88 and @IriDas Welcome! So glad you‘re with us! 2w
julieclair @AnishaInkspill Glad you‘re joining! It is definitely an easygoing challenge. Participate when you can. 😀 2w
julieclair @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I admire you for cleaning up your Goodreads. I need to do the same with my Litsy and StoryGraph lists. I love that you already have books for most of the categories! I bet your newly organized list will help you stick with it! 😃 2w
julieclair @Texreader Hooray! Glad you‘re joining! This is a very low-key challenge. Dip in and out as your schedule allows. 2w
julieclair @TimEW Welcome! So glad you‘re with us! Read at your own pace. This is a very easygoing challenge. 😀 2w
julieclair @do-re-mi Some people like to read the books in order, but you can read the books in any order you like. You don‘t even have to read one from every category. Just pick a nonfiction book you‘d like to read each month, and that‘s it! 😃 2w
AnishaInkspill @julieclair thank you, that's really good to know, next year I'm going to read the easier Stephen Hawking book. Not sure how this will go but just doing it. 2w
do-re-mi Thank you. 🙂 2w
julieclair @AnishaInkspill Good for you! And, I didn‘t know there was an easier version of A Brief History of Time. I need to tell my son! 7d
julieclair @do-re-mi You‘re welcome! Glad you‘re going to join us! 7d
AnishaInkspill @julieclair I'm not sure if this helps as I am new to these books. As I understand it Briefer History in Time is an easier read than Brief History in Time, cont ... 6d
AnishaInkspill @julieclair ... cont but this wasn't easy enough for me so I started with Hawking's Brief Answers to the Big Questions to help me feel more confident to read the other two books. 6d
julieclair @AnishaInkspill Brief Answers sounds even better! 😘 4d

November #MonthlyNonfiction2025 reads @julieclair
#NonfictionNovember was a busy one ☺️

julieclair Wow, great month! Rediscovering Turtle Island looks interesting to me. Sea Turtles have been coming to Hilton Head Island, SC, where I live, for hundreds of years. The idea of seeing a “turtle island” through the eyes of First Nation people sounds fascinating. 1mo

Updated schedule for #SheSaid!

We had 1 book with 5 votes (Wild Swans) and 4 with 4 votes. I added them all to our schedule for 2026 along with our 2 fiction reads. I did bump Wild Swans back to March, so we could read it and the follow-up book by the author after (and hopefully 🤞 when the hold lines at the library are not so long for a new release 😬). Then there were about 12 books tied after that…so new vote this summer.

Time for our last #MonthlyNonfiction2025 selection of the year! What will everyone be reading? My choice is Rick Steves‘ European Christmas.

We will be continuing for 2026. Please comment below if you‘d like to be added to, or removed from, the tag list.

Everyone is welcome! The challenge is simple: read one nonfiction book each month.

Tagging all who participated this year. It has been fun exploring nonfiction together!

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I did horribly this year! But please keep me on the tag list. I'm hoping to do a better job next year. I cannot promise to go through the categories in order, though. 🤣 1mo
ReadingInTheRealWorld Please add me to the list. 🙂 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I actually have read a nonfiction book from my personal collection for every section this year!!! I'm super pleased with my progress, so keep me on your list!! This month, I'm finishing (or trying to!) Agatha Christie's autobiography that I started at the beginning of November. It's so good but THICK 😂 1mo

willaful @TheAromaofBooks I really enjoyed that, I recall. Her second memoir is on my #10BeforeTheEnd but I stupidly loaned it to my mom! 1mo
willaful I've been reading mostly memoirs, should make an effort to diversify next year. 1mo
MonicaLoves2Read I'm going to read Ain't Nobody‘s Fool: The Life & Times of Dolly Parton by Martha Ackmann 1mo
peanutnine I tried to read at least one book in each category and I've got one left for Language that I'll be reading for December! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @willaful - Oooo what is the title of that one? I may have to read it next! Her writing style is so friendly and companionable. It's like having a visit with a favorite auntie. 😂 1mo
willaful @TheAromaofBooks It's about her second marriage to an archeologist and called Come Tell Me How You Live. Seems absolutely charming! (edited) 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @willaful - I will definitely check it out!! It's interesting because it looks like she actually wrote that before her longer autobiography, so I bet they would complement each other and fill in some gaps!! 1mo
ferskner I'm in for next year! I've had a very strange reading year so I didn't participate like I thought I would, but I'm excited for next year. 4w
julieclair @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I don‘t go through the categories in order, either! Glad you‘re back for another year. Participate when you can. This is a very casual challenge. 😘 3w
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks You have done so well with this challenge! Glad you‘re back for another year! 3w
julieclair @MonicaLoves2Read I bet that will be interesting and inspiring. I‘m such a Dolly fan! 3w
julieclair @peanutnine Good for you! I tried, too, but missed two categories. 3w
julieclair @ferskner So glad you‘re back for another year! 💙 3w
julieclair @willaful I‘m just the opposite! I didn‘t read any memoirs and want to read several next year. 3w
MonicaLoves2Read I'm reading The Typewriter and the Guillotine 3w
julieclair @MonicaLoves2Read That book sounds fascinating! Looking forward to your review. 2w

Bookwormjillk How many do you want us to vote for? 2mo
Suet624 Hi, I think you can remove me from this list. Next year I‘m really committed to reading my books on my shelf so I can start moving them out. I want to thank you for your work in organizing this group though. The books have been really interesting and informative. (edited) 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookwormjillk vote for any you are interested in reading with the group. 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Suet624 we need to start some challenge group for that. Reading books off our own shelves. I need to do that badly too 2mo
Singout Thank you, Melissa! Organizing this list is a workout! 2mo
MallenNC Great list! Some I‘m not familiar with and others I‘d already read so I just picked some that seemed intriguing. 1mo
