Moonshot by Brian Floca tells the truth tale of Apollo 11. This book is an amazing way to introduce young learners to this historic event. Young readers can see illustrations of scientist, preparing for the launch of Apollo 11 and can also read about the journey that they took. I would especially recommend this book to any teachers or parents of budding scientists.

Another #MiddleGrade finished this month! I love that Mamie (named after the First Lady) chose Michael Collins to write to out of the 3 Apollo 11 astronauts. He was the best - in her words - because he stayed with the ship. Mamie‘s adventures and circumstances that she experienced that summer were also incredible. Her bff Buster really was the best! #32 #BookSpin #15 #BFC22 #20in4 #PANTONE2022 #Blueberry #MGMsrchThroughTime #MiddleGradeMarch

This was cute. I liked the relationship the main character had with her best-friend/neighbor. There was quite a bit of interesting Apollo 11 trivia. However, the resolution was a bit too speedy.

A quick, accessible look at the complexity of planning the first manned mission to the moon. There's not much more to say about this one, really.

My son and I read this one for Build Your Library curriculum Level 6.

cozypunk An excellent follow-up book would be Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11. The illustrations are incredible! 3y

A quick #bookreport from #hiselderliness for @Cinfhen

Just 1 book “If you‘re interested in the moon & how they got there then this is the most fantastic book you‘ll ever read. If you‘re not interested in the moon, it‘s a bit repetitive. They had to practice for three years to get there you know”
Me: So what about you then, did you like it?

**Incredulous glare**
“I said it was fantastic didn‘t I?!!”

Lesson: Don‘t poke the tiger 🐆😳

Centique The starry picture is from the Dark Sky Project at Lake Tekapo (where I was just on holiday - not my photo though). It‘s a dark sky reserve for the benefit of astronomers. 3y
Crazeedi I love the moon! 3y
Cinfhen Beautiful location for a getaway, no NOT the moon 🌙 although outer space is cool too! Another wonderful review from my favorite reviewer #HisElderliness 3y

Moonshot written and illustrated by Brian Floca is a super cute NF picture book for any student interested in space-which we know is a good chunk of students! Winner of the Caldecott medal, this book will take you on the journey of Apollo 11. Students can read all about the events that took place, and what it means to be an astronaut. #ucflae3414su20

ashleyshugars For this specific picture book, I would recommend using it as an IR, as it is very interest based, following UDL strategy 7.1. For EL students, try using a KWL strategy in conjunction with ESOL strategy 50. Try this resource for some different classroom incorporation ideas: https://www.readworks.org/lessons/grade2/moonshot-flight-apollo-11. (edited) 4y
JessicaO Hi, Ashley! Thank you for sharing this book. I am trying to expand my library that I and slowly growing with my non-fiction type books and this is a great choice. Your description makes it seem so interesting, and I know that students like seeing factual information in this way. I like that you said in your classroom resource description that this book is interest based! I will keep that in mind when implementing something like it in my class! 4y
DrSpalding Read works is another excellent resource! This could be used as reference material as an independent read but it could also support your space unit in science. The author/illustrator has won numerous awards. This would be a great book to add to your classroom library. 4y

Stunning in detail and scope - especially the illustrations. Text isn't less stunning or detailed, it's just a different style - poetic maybe? Read aloud, it's matter-of-fact but not dry. To quote the front flap, "Simply told, grandly shown..." Has the most informative endsheets I've every laid eyes on. My only critcism: I wish author included resources for futher reading or investigating. #dw2020reads #nonfiction #kidslit #readyoursign #cancer
