The Orphan's Tale | Pam Jenoff
Mehso-so

A heartbreaking journey of Noa and Astrid‘s & their circumstances that lead to their involvement of the circus during WWII. When there is so much sadness & brokenness, the circus serves as a beacon of hope for the circus employees and show goers. Enduring raids, loss of lives & love, and being ostracized, the unlikely pair form a sisterly bond through the trapeze. Life is fragile, but their resilience is strong as the rope that holds in the sky.

This was my 5th time reading this one and it just gets better each time! One of my favorite elements, besides the incredible descriptions, is that the author gives us the opportunity to view the circus from both the inside, from the perspective of the performers and creators, and the outside through the characters of Herr Thiessen and Bailey. It provides a complete picture of the enchanting world. It‘s a forever favorite for me.

“You‘re in the right place at the right time, and you care enough to do what needs to be done. Sometimes that‘s enough.”

Very enchanting. I wish some of the characters had been developed a bit more, but it was very atmospheric and sweet.

Mirette On The High Wire by Emily Arnold McCully, 1993. Caldecott Award Winning Book. This book has very colorful and vibrant images. It takes the reader back 100 years into the past. The story is about a little girl who wants to learn to walk a tightrope. She has a curious and adventurous spirit.

Truly and honestly picked for the gorgeous cover and topic of the circus, “TFCOMS” was overall not bad. Hough develops a strong voice in Stark, but the novel largely turns into episodes of her marriages with men we barely get to know, and an extremely limited cast of interesting side characters. The fact that Hough ends this book with a BJ is crazy work. Worth the read if you like reading circus fiction. No “Water for Elephants” for sure!
