Mixed reviews on this one, but I‘ve loved several that had same kinds of mixed reviews, so giving this a shot tonight! Another one down from my TBR shelf!!!

First book finished in October. I wanted to finish this before the end of September but it didn‘t happen. I really enjoyed this story. It was dark and beautiful, raw and gritty, whimsical and tragic. The writing had some wonderful poetic descriptions. One of the best books I‘ve read this year.

I baked cinnamon buns with brandy-poached cranberries and a glaze made out of the leftover liquid! Unfortunately, I had a couple issues with the dough that meant I had to knead it by hand, and they aren‘t as good as usual. Edible, yeah, but not stellar. 😔

At least the extra work gave me more time with THE LONELY HEARTS HOTEL. It‘s nothing like I imagined it‘d be. I‘m obsessed with it.

The lonely hearts hotel by Heather O‘Neill is based in an orphanage where two gifted orphans fall deeply in love with each other. They will go to extreme lengths to make their wishes come true. I really enjoyed this book because it shows how friendship, love, art and music can save us from ourselves. Sexual abuse, drugs, pain and suffering occurred several times in the book which can make it a not easy read for some readers.

I feel like there should be trigger warnings SOMEWHERE in/for this book! 😓

Author starts out with an incestuous rape scene and it didn‘t get any better from there. There was nothing about either mc that I actually remembered because the author didn‘t bother to give them any personality, really. I know that they were beaten, starved, molested and locked in cabinets for days at a time (as well as other horrendous abuses)...

It‘s weird to say about a book I read basically in one sitting, but this was a quiet, slow read for me. It‘s whimsical and humorous, brutal and sad, full of hope and absolutely heartbreaking. I‘ve seen this book compared to The Night Circus, but honestly I‘ve not read anything like this. Such beautiful, stunning writing.

I‘m going to need a moment. 😢

This book was so unexpectedly multilayered. The characters are in equal measure gentle and fiery, poetic and provocative, likeable and brutal. I loved getting to know Rose and Pierrot - their personalities unfold in a way that feels organic and raw and real.

Not a fan. I listened to the audio and the narrator was good, but it wasn‘t enough. I thought, at the start, I was going to like it, but it didn‘t turn out that way. I didn‘t like any of the characters, and I didn‘t care about what happened to them (except when they were young and still at the orphanage). Disappointing, especially since I really liked “Lullabies for Little Criminals” by this author.

Finished my last read of 2018! I ended up for the most part really enjoying it and gave it 4.25 stars; I did have issues with a few parts of the writing and I enjoyed the later parts of the book much more than the earlier. Now I want to start a new book but I don‘t know what I‘m in the mood for to kick off 2019. My first read of 2018 ended up being one of my favorites (If We Were Villains) so I‘m feeling the pressure!

TFW you‘re a little bit into 3 books you need to finish before the end of the year, yet all you want to do is re-read the Shatter Me series because your mood-reader tendencies are in the driver‘s seat 😂

I just adore this book! It was just as good the second time! It reads like a gritty fairytale about trauma, addiction and enduring whimsical love. So engaging!

Went to Cirque de Soleil tonight with my family. How appropriate while I'm listening to a book about a ragtag circus from Montreal. The show was great! 🎡🎪🤹🤡

Had the day off of work today and binge read all day. Oh my goodness it was so good I want to start it all over again. I guess I‘ll read through Heathers backlog instead.

This one is definitely #underrated . It doesn't have great reviews on #litsy but I absolutely loved it and still think about the magic of it often. #31bookpics @howjessreads Also showing the tone of snow we got yesterday!

Still trying to decide if this was one of the best or worst books I've read recently, and while I'm not ready to recommend it to a friend, I am glad I read it. The style of this novel is singular and the story is littered with pretty turns of phrase. The characters and chapter titles are whimsical within a fully realized world.

My next book club pick! So excited 😻😻

Just started it this afternoon!

I audiobooked this one and picked it purely based on the cover and title... and then the reader introduced me to a special brand of heartbreak cocktail: 2 parts sexual abuse, 1 part emotional abuse, 1 part physical abuse, 2 parts drug abuse, 2 parts broken dreams, 3 parts hope, 4 parts tragic event after tragic event - mix thoroughly and pour over icecubes made of tears and lost innocence. Oh yeah, and it's a love story. (a wonderful downer)

Dark themes (child rape, sexual and physical abuse and rape, and more). Writing was a little too clever with multiple metaphors heavily layered throughout. Overwrought. I was expecting something along the lines of Night Circus. Would not recommend.

Now, thanks to Irving, he had a life philosophy that he could not afford to have. This was a common denominator of most addicts, which Pierrot would become.

This book started out making me really uncomfortable. The author certainly does not hold back any descriptions or shy away from any subjects. After I got over myself, I came to see it as a strength in an author to be completely honest in the storytelling. The ending was unexpected and worth reading through the whole thing. I bought this book because of the unbelievably beautiful cover - i did not expect the story inside!

I showed GREAT restraint at Target this morning and didn‘t buy any of these books! And The Lonely Hearts Hotel is a signed copy!!

Looks like organizing home libraries was the thing to do this holiday break! Here we moved shelves, I reorganized my book shelves, cleaned up the area, and I‘ve moved the books that I want to try and focus on to the shelves we moved to the family room (by the fireplace) And of course what happened right after I did this so many lists of new shiny books coming out in 2018 were posted! 🤪🤪🤪
