The Lonely Hearts Hotel
The Lonely Hearts Hotel: A Novel | Heather O'Neill
With echoes of The Night Circus, a spellbinding story about two gifted orphans in love with each other since they can remember whose childhood talents allow them to rewrite their future. The Lonely Hearts Hotel is a love story with the power of legend. An unparalleled tale of charismatic pianos, invisible dance partners, radicalized chorus girls, drug-addicted musicians, brooding clowns, and an underworld whose economy hinges on the price of a kiss. In a landscape like this, it takes great creative gifts to thwart ones origins. It might also take true love. Two babies are abandoned in a Montreal orphanage in the winter of 1910. Before long, their talents emerge: Pierrot is a piano prodigy; Rose lights up even the dreariest room with her dancing and comedy. As they travel around the city performing clown routines, the children fall in love with each other and dream up a plan for the most extraordinary and seductive circus show the world has ever seen. Separated as teenagers, sent off to work as servants during the Great Depression, both descend into the citys underworld, dabbling in sex, drugs and theft in order to survive. But when Rose and Pierrot finally reunite beneath the snowflakes after years of searching and desperate poverty the possibilities of their childhood dreams are renewed, and theyll go to extreme lengths to make them come true. Soon, Rose, Pierrot and their troupe of clowns and chorus girls have hit New York, commanding the stage as well as the alleys, and neither the theater nor the underworld will ever look the same. With her musical language and extravagantly realized world, Heather ONeill enchants us with a novel so magical there is no escaping its spell. From the Hardcover edition.

First book finished in October. I wanted to finish this before the end of September but it didn‘t happen. I really enjoyed this story. It was dark and beautiful, raw and gritty, whimsical and tragic. The writing had some wonderful poetic descriptions. One of the best books I‘ve read this year.

I baked cinnamon buns with brandy-poached cranberries and a glaze made out of the leftover liquid! Unfortunately, I had a couple issues with the dough that meant I had to knead it by hand, and they aren‘t as good as usual. Edible, yeah, but not stellar. 😔

At least the extra work gave me more time with THE LONELY HEARTS HOTEL. It‘s nothing like I imagined it‘d be. I‘m obsessed with it.

Major TW for child sex abuse, though. #audiobaking

The lonely hearts hotel by Heather O‘Neill is based in an orphanage where two gifted orphans fall deeply in love with each other. They will go to extreme lengths to make their wishes come true. I really enjoyed this book because it shows how friendship, love, art and music can save us from ourselves. Sexual abuse, drugs, pain and suffering occurred several times in the book which can make it a not easy read for some readers.

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review Aleks! It‘s certainly a heart-wrenching book! I was just missing the explanation of the motif! 5/6 4y

I feel like there should be trigger warnings SOMEWHERE in/for this book! 😓

Author starts out with an incestuous rape scene and it didn‘t get any better from there. There was nothing about either mc that I actually remembered because the author didn‘t bother to give them any personality, really. I know that they were beaten, starved, molested and locked in cabinets for days at a time (as well as other horrendous abuses)...

danielle.reading But other than that, nothing. The author was so clearly focused on the tragic shit happening to these characters that they didn‘t even bother with giving them personalities, or for using on their, what I‘m assuming to be, magical traits. And let‘s get into the authors weird obsession with mentioning the male mc‘s penis, from literal minutes out of his mother‘s womb the author is making him having an erection and it only gets worse from there. (edited) 4y
danielle.reading At the age of eleven, the author says how much more “endowed” he is and then we jump into a very detailed molestation and that, my friends, is where I had to bail. Mind you I was on page 25 at this point! Reading about gratuitous sexual abuse and child abuse is not my idea of fun. Also, it is exceptionally weird and icky, for me, because I have a 12 yr old son. 🥴 I can‘t. I am not okay. 🤢🤢 4y
ItsAnotherJen It was a beautifully written book. Disturbing and dark...yes. However, the writing was excellent! I couldn't put it down. I agree it needs a warning label because most reviews do not mention the physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Definitely not for everyone. 4y

MsMelissa I read Suzanne last year (or the year before?) when it was part of Canada Reads. I thought it was ok, but felt as if maybe something had been lost in translation (what may be described as beautiful writing in French isn‘t necessarily as beautiful when translated to English). 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira @Book_Fiend_Melissa could be. I felt that her writing, in La femme qui fuit, was like glass lace. I remember a very lively bookclub discussion also ☺️ 4y

It‘s weird to say about a book I read basically in one sitting, but this was a quiet, slow read for me. It‘s whimsical and humorous, brutal and sad, full of hope and absolutely heartbreaking. I‘ve seen this book compared to The Night Circus, but honestly I‘ve not read anything like this. Such beautiful, stunning writing.

I‘m going to need a moment. 😢

#GrandHotel #WanderingJune.

I quite enjoyed this story about orphans Rose and Pierrot.

Cinfhen I almost purchased this book 2 weeks ago ~ couldn‘t decide if I‘d like it?!?!! 5y
JennyM @Cinfhen it always gets very mixed reviews. It‘s pretty sad, and I remember being frustrated in parts, but I also remember I quite liked it. But I don‘t remember much of the story (although that‘s not uncommon for my in-one-ear, out-the-other brain). 5y

This book was so unexpectedly multilayered. The characters are in equal measure gentle and fiery, poetic and provocative, likeable and brutal. I loved getting to know Rose and Pierrot - their personalities unfold in a way that feels organic and raw and real.

Not a fan. I listened to the audio and the narrator was good, but it wasn‘t enough. I thought, at the start, I was going to like it, but it didn‘t turn out that way. I didn‘t like any of the characters, and I didn‘t care about what happened to them (except when they were young and still at the orphanage). Disappointing, especially since I really liked “Lullabies for Little Criminals” by this author.

Finished my last read of 2018! I ended up for the most part really enjoying it and gave it 4.25 stars; I did have issues with a few parts of the writing and I enjoyed the later parts of the book much more than the earlier. Now I want to start a new book but I don‘t know what I‘m in the mood for to kick off 2019. My first read of 2018 ended up being one of my favorites (If We Were Villains) so I‘m feeling the pressure!

Still trying to decide if this was one of the best or worst books I've read recently, and while I'm not ready to recommend it to a friend, I am glad I read it. The style of this novel is singular and the story is littered with pretty turns of phrase. The characters and chapter titles are whimsical within a fully realized world.

I audiobooked this one and picked it purely based on the cover and title... and then the reader introduced me to a special brand of heartbreak cocktail: 2 parts sexual abuse, 1 part emotional abuse, 1 part physical abuse, 2 parts drug abuse, 2 parts broken dreams, 3 parts hope, 4 parts tragic event after tragic event - mix thoroughly and pour over icecubes made of tears and lost innocence. Oh yeah, and it's a love story. (a wonderful downer)

Dark themes (child rape, sexual and physical abuse and rape, and more). Writing was a little too clever with multiple metaphors heavily layered throughout. Overwrought. I was expecting something along the lines of Night Circus. Would not recommend.

This book started out making me really uncomfortable. The author certainly does not hold back any descriptions or shy away from any subjects. After I got over myself, I came to see it as a strength in an author to be completely honest in the storytelling. The ending was unexpected and worth reading through the whole thing. I bought this book because of the unbelievably beautiful cover - i did not expect the story inside!

Valink @JuliWilliams I do that at Target and at the book store. If The Immortalists isn‘t a BOTM pick I may cave and buy it.
