It‘s past noon on the first day of 2019 over here and what better way to kickstart my reading year with the fantastic Mr Gaiman! From his extraordinary mind combined with the stunning illustrations of Chris Riddell, this is a reimagined fairy tale like no other. It‘s a ‘fusion‘ of Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. You think you know the story, but there‘s a plot twist! I love it!

"And she laughed."

I have finished THE BEAST IS AN ANIMAL by Peternelle Van Arsdale.
This book was very odd but interesting. The story flows and connects well. The main character weren't annoying in any way. It has a little bit of romance but it doesn't focus on it to much on. I enjoyed the bit of romance. It's like it's own fairy tale.
I honestly enjoyed it! It wasn't at all what I guessed or expected. [??? out of 5] #firstreadoftheyear

I still have books on the go from 2017, but these will be my #FirstReadoftheYear. I knew I'd like Rupi Kaur's poetry, but Bridget Jones? It's not the sort of thing I usually go for. I'm trying to read outside my go-to genres though, so why not? Much to my surprise, I've started enjoying it; even lol'd once. I doubt it'll make my list of all-time faves, but I'm not hating it so far, so yay! #1stBookof2018 #NewYearReads #JaninBooks18

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I really want the two Rupi Kaur books!! 📚😌 7y
writerlibrarian Rupi Kaur's poetry is wonderful and emotional. Bridget I read in zigzag a long time ago. I rather read the inspiration aka Austen. Bridget is funny but a bit too hysterical for my taste. 7y

Home Fire: A Novel | Kamila Shamsie

Mehso-so

Some excerpts in this book were beautifully written, but overall, I think Shamsie tried to pack this book with too much, too quickly. The characters felt somewhat superficial, except for Isma, who we lost touch with after the initial section written from her perspective. Most of the main events required too much suspense of belief for me to fully engage- especially that ending.

batsy Yes! I had a problem with the superficially-drawn characters, except Isma. 7y
BarbaraBB Oh.. so sorry that you didn‘t like it. It was one of my absolute favourites last year, although i agree on Isma. 7y
Mdargusch Was it “profound “? 7y

Reviewsbylola You took a risk for your #firstbook. Sorry it didn‘t work. 7y
minkyb Sorry this didn‘t do much for you. I loved it. However, my daughter (30) was not thrilled with it either. It‘s always a crapshoot. 😅 7y
LauraJ Instead of writing a review, I‘m just going to refer everyone to yours. I couldn‘t have expressed myself as well as you have. 7y
emilyhaldi @LauraJ you're too kind, thank you! I had so much to say about this one that it was hard to narrow it down, but I prioritized the things that bothered me the most 😆 Happy to hear you agree with me! This book was so hyped up I was bummed that it just didn't work for me. 7y

Pages for You: A Novel | Sylvia Brownrigg

Pickpick

Still reeling from my experience with Call Me By Your Name, I was desperate to find another novel about first love. I absolutely fell into another state of ecstasy over Pages for You; it is wildly captivating + that all-consuming, intoxicating, sensual, and ultimately, fragile, bubble you create with another person was perfectly expressed. The writing is a gift (some find it pretentious) and I can barely wait for the sequel to arrive in the mail.

mhillis I just read Pages for Her without having read this one first! Great review📚 7y
MicheleinPhilly I absolutely LOVED this. 7y
mauveandrosysky Oooh! Adding to my list. 7y

The only #litsychallenges I'm taking part in are the monthly photo challenges, but I'm going to try to stick to those. And this finale to the Riyria Revelations series is my #firstreadoftheyear. It's off to an amazing start!! #readingresolutions #janinbooks18
