Pages for You: A Novel | Sylvia Brownrigg

A wry, tender novel of sexual and intellectual awakening. Something made her risk a look at the reader, who took a sip of black coffee. And another. She turned the pages. She pursed her lips. Flannery abandoned her breakfast and watched the woman drink her coffee. It wasn't that she wanted the coffee herself. That wasn't it. Rather, she wanted to be the coffee: she envied the dark drink its chance to taste those lips.In a steam-filled diner in a college town, Flannery Jansen catches sight of something more beautiful than she's ever seen: a graduate student, reading. Flannery, a seventeen-year-old, new to everything around her -- college, the East Coast, bodies of literature, and the sexual flurries of student life -- is shocked by her own desire to follow this beauty wherever it takes her. By chance she finds herself enrolled in a class taught by the remote, brilliant older woman; intimidated at first, she gradually becomes Anne Arden's student outside class as well. Whatever the subject -- Baudelaire, lipstick colors -- Flannery proves an eager pupil, until one day she learns more about Anne than she ever wanted to know.A bittersweet, exhilarating, sentimental education, Pages for You confirms Sylvia Brownrigg as "one of the most exuberantly agile minds among younger American writers" (Dan Cryer, Newsday) and is her sexiest, most poignant work to date.

Not as beautiful as call me by my name or find me but still a heart breaking poetic tale of first love all the highs all the lows and the crushing heart breaks we all endure in our teens . A great read written in small snap shot lyrical chapters

The lackluster reviews for this one have me surprised. It is the elegant, raw tale of a first love. Flannery is a college freshman when she falls in love with chic, sophisticated Anne. Their passionate affair lasts until the spring, when Flannery is then faced with her first heartbreak.

I loved the stunning prose that were also very relatable. #booked2018 #LGBQTMC

Reading is how I get myself in a #deepsleep every night. But lately my books have been keeping me up until close to midnight every night and I have to admit, waking up in the morning isn‘t easy!!

Last night I finished a book around 10pm but instead of going to sleep like I should have, I reached over to my bedside table and grabbed a new one. 😅 #septemberdanes

Cinfhen And I just bailed on three in a row!!! I NEED new book inspiration 😜 6y

Kalalalatja Haha I really want to read in bed, but my bf isn‘t a fan, so I haven‘t made it work yet. Luckily, I‘m home all day, and a big fan of naps, so I don‘t mind reading in bed during the day 😄😄😄 6y
Reviewsbylola My husband comes to bed MUCH later than me most of the time and he is also the type of person that gets in to bed and is asleep within seconds so lamps don‘t bother him at all. @Kalalalatja 6y

I flew through the first half of this story of Flannery's coming of age story. But then crawled through the second half. I enjoyed the writing...but I fear I was just not in the right mind set for the book. I am on the fence about reading the companion novel Pages for Her. Thoughts?

Flannery, a university student, falls in love with Anne, 10 yrs her senior. This starts beautifully & the language is poetic & sensual throughout. Flannery & Anne are interesting, each strong in their own way, & the dynamics of a relationship wonderfully observed. But I didn‘t share Flannery‘s absorption in her new love. She was like a precocious uni student; it didn‘t quite hold my interest. Saved by the lyrical writing.

It‘s been a long day. Enjoying a sip of wine and the last 80 pages of this book. I loved the start but it waned a bit once they got together - no dramatic tension, lots of knowing book references, which I can‘t bear (even in a university novel). But also some beautiful writing so I‘m hanging in there!

Reviewsbylola I just bought this. I hope I like it. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 7y

I never felt fully immersed or deeply moved by this book, and I think I can pinpoint exactly why: the third-person narration kept me at a distance the whole time. How I wish I could have been deeper inside 17-year-old Flannery's head as she experienced first love with the poised and sophisticated Anne. I wanted to be wrecked by this but it just didn't happen.

mauveandrosysky Don't hate me @BooksForEmpathy 🙈🙈🙈💕💕💕 7y
BooksForEmpathy @mauveandrosysky Hiii! Oh no! I could never hate you, even with this book between us haha! This hit me in such a sweet, sentimental way and I am really enjoying the sequel where we understand more of Anne in a surprising and fresh way. Anne was emotionally distant for a reason, and it is evident in the second book. I connected with both characters and really felt like I had been on both sides. It will remain special to me 😘. 7y
BooksForEmpathy I do see what you mean though, however I really felt captivated by Flannery and how she was so overwhelmed and swelling with new emotions and the romantic and brave acts of love she felt compelled to carry out made me feel softer towards myself when I think of that age. I did not lose control of myself the way I did with CBMYN though. That was just an incomparable experience. But if you ever feel THAT again please tell me!! 7y
mauveandrosysky @BooksForEmpathy I suspect I'd enjoy Anne's perspective more than Flannery's, so I'm sure I'll read the sequel eventually! I do like the idea of following up a brief but memorable love years later (like the Before Sunrise trilogy, one of my favorites). I feel like I'll be chasing the CMBYN high forever!! When I think about comparable experiences A Little Life always comes to mind, which I know you loved too. It's few and far between though! 7y

Still reeling from my experience with Call Me By Your Name, I was desperate to find another novel about first love. I absolutely fell into another state of ecstasy over Pages for You; it is wildly captivating + that all-consuming, intoxicating, sensual, and ultimately, fragile, bubble you create with another person was perfectly expressed. The writing is a gift (some find it pretentious) and I can barely wait for the sequel to arrive in the mail.

mhillis I just read Pages for Her without having read this one first! Great review📚 7y

Absolutely loved this book. Slightly bereft it's over, what a reading experience. Feel like I lived Flannery and Anne's love affair with them, the highs and the lows. I didn't want it or the book to ever end.

MamaGina Dare I say it? This sounds similar to "Carol" but better.? 8y
