A powerful listening experience. It's a sad, horrific, true story of the massive consequences of health inequality, told with humanity and grace. I understand now why this became his cause, and there's hope in the fact that so much has and still can be done to help. (Though as an American, it's hard not to fear we've taken such a wrong turn, we soon won't even be able to help ourselves.)

Librarybelle On my to read list! 7d

I started this one a few years ago & then life got busy & I put it aside. I‘m happy that I finally went back to finish it. I had this cathartic moment as I was finishing that the topics & subjects covered in this book are really difficult things to face & come to terms with. Not making excuses for people because they just need to unlearn that sh—. But I can also see why people can‘t unlearn it. US history is so entwined with racism that most don‘t

ncsufoxes even realize it‘s racism. I really felt that what Bryan Stevenson said captures why it‘s so hard to overcome & recon with our past. “Recognizing the unbroken links between slavery, Black Codes, lynching, & our current era of mass incarceration is essential. Like generations before, we must struggle for an end to bigotry. We must fight to repair the damage created by centuries of racial injustice. We must commit to a new era of truth & justice, one 2w
ncsufoxes in which we honestly confront our past so that we can understand what remedies are needed to achieve healthy communities & justice for people who have been fairly excluded & targeted. Our nation must acknowledge the four hundred years of injustice that haunt us.” 2w
ncsufoxes “In Germany, there has been a meaningful reckoning with the history of the Holocaust; this sort of reflection & remembrance has been largely absent in America, where many people resist confronting the most disturbing & difficult parts of our past.” #realhistory #honesthistory 2w
Librarybelle So true…US history is so entwined with racism that most don‘t see it. Great review! 2w

Librarybelle Good Morning! It‘s a beautiful morning in South Central Pennsylvania. Today is chores in the morning followed by a fashion webinar hosted by Jane Austen‘s House (love that I can see evening programs in the UK in the afternoon here). I need to read the next Nancy Drew book this weekend, but I started this one to get back to the library on Monday, and it‘s such an important read…everyone should read this #HonestHistory #RealHistory 4w
ShelleyBooksie Good morning! It's a rainy day here in my neck of the woods. Need to do some chores then I plan to write some #Litsylove and dip into the book Sleepless Nights by Canadian Author Pierre C Arsenault 4w
TheBookHippie Getting all my above ground gardening planters (25) ready to plant - it still freezes here overnight… I plant after May 20 generally. But first late brunch, coffee… my electric blanket died and it‘s hard for my joints to not have it before I sleep and before I get up. (RA) new one arriving today! Last two nights without it have been tough. 😵‍💫🫣😝 happy Saturday all! 4w

dabbe Hi, everyone. Drinking one cup of ☕️ and then going for a dog walk before it hits 100 degrees. Then, we‘ll shelter inside while praying to the ac gods. I‘m sure some putzing inside the house will occur. Happy Saturday! 🤩 4w
DebinHawaii Woke up all stuffy with a cold I think. 🤧Enjoying the morning at the coffee shop as usual & errands. Hopefully a nap later too. 4w

#Read2025 #MonthlyNonFiction2025 #RealHistory #HonestHistory

Read with #SheSaid for April, Brittney Copper writes clearly & passionately & I like how she weaves her personal experiences in with culture, history & current events. It‘s dismaying that this book was written in 2018 with Trump in office the first time & reading it in 2025 things just continue to get worse. Truthfully as a white woman, it was uncomfortable reading at times as she ⬇️

DebinHawaii … is spot on in her evaluation of our collective role in the injustice & bigotry that hold women of color & thus all women back. I think I highlighted half the book, but the two quotes pictured especially stood out for me because at the end of the day, Cooper focuses on hope & building the kind of world we want to see. (edited) 1mo
Librarybelle I should read this! 1mo

Last night on IG Tad Stoermer was discussing the recent book ban by the Naval Academy. He talked about how we have the power to continue to push back on the narrative. Use our power on social media to disrupt the algorithms. Keep reading & posting books that are banned. He said “No permission required. They erase. We restore.” #publichistory #resistancehistory #honesthistory #resistance #howrevolutionary

Time I get to this one . @Librarybelle suggested the tag #RealHistory @dabbe suggested #HonestHistory Remembering the sanitary history of my school days , I remember thinking, is this all there is? Doesn‘t seem some people, stories are left out ? Over the years there are more options available. Older ones below.

Repost for @Librarybelle

This is very low key—no tag list, so feel free to participate how often you would like. I am reading one nonfiction a month that looks beyond the history found in schools.

If you would like to participate, post your book and thoughts each month, using #RealHistory and/or #HonestHistory . I‘ll make a bibliography for those interested.

See original post at https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2852508

Librarybelle Thanks for reposting! 2mo

Fair warning…this may be a bit political. Though, as @TheBookHippie recently posted, reading is political.

I am beyond angry. Today‘s loss of IMLS, and the recent news of the future changes at the Smithsonian, are terrifying. Imagine a world without the services you rely on at the library or visiting a museum that provides a sanitized, incorrect history. In the US, that‘s what we will soon see.

So, I plan to read one nonfiction title a month ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️ …that tells a full picture of history, not a sanitized version of a certain point of view. History is made of layers, and up until fairly recently, most of the stories we know come from the winners or those with the loudest voice in the room. The last 20-25 years has seen an increase in the stories hidden for decades, because they were of individuals who were not of a certain demographic. The news is out; you cannot remove these people from ⬇️ 2mo
Librarybelle ⬆️ …existence again. I want to read these #RealHistory titles to keep the memory of those silenced voices alive. Feel free to join if you wish. This is more of a read what you wish each month, and perhaps I‘ll collect a bibliography of titles read. History is so important. The silenced voices are important. Books are important. My choice for April is this book way too long on my shelf. I‘m passed due reading it. 2mo

TheBookHippie I have read this. It‘s very good. I think we should make a hashtag and I‘m going to go to my shelf. FYI our poet this month was political I‘m told! 2mo
Librarybelle @Tamra I‘ve yet to see the documentary! 2mo
Librarybelle @TheBookHippie I‘ve not read anything by Millay, so I‘m looking forward to it! I‘m bad at making catchy hashtags! I used #RealHistory , but I‘m open to anything. 😁 2mo
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle @dabbe is the expert 😂 2mo
Librarybelle Thoughts, @dabbe ??? What makes a good hashtag for this? @TheBookHippie and I would like to know! 😂 2mo
dabbe @TheBookHippie @Librarybelle #realhistory is fantastic! 🤩 Maybe #honesthistory or #hh would, too. 🤔 2mo
ncsufoxes A few weeks ago I pulled this book back off my shelf. I‘ve read about a 1/4 of it & haven‘t gotten back to it. It‘s one I need to get to but right I feel like there are too many important books to consume right now. All of this right now is so infuriating & well the only way to put is f—-ed up. (edited) 2mo
Librarybelle @ncsufoxes It totally is. Ugh! 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads This tells the story of my history and ancestors. 2mo
