This is either one of the best books I‘ve read on the Christian practice of contemplation—or I read it at exactly the right time. Or both. It made connections between contemplation and the fruit of the practice in ways that clicked for me. I‘ve found contemplation to be an exercise in trust & letting go. Laird‘s descriptions of the journey into silence dovetailed with that experience—it resonated deeply. I‘m so glad I read it at the time I did.
I seem to have a talent for choosing strange books to start with when it comes to new-to-me authors. Annie Dillard wrote this slim text, 66 pages, over the course of 3 days when a young girl went down in a plane crash on the Washington island where she was living. She writes about a child‘s face literally burning off…but in the style of Mary Oliver. On hallucinogens (which she was falsely accused of using while penning the book). It‘s a lot.👇🏻
Thank you Lynn - your book package arrived with great timing! I appreciate you sending them! 😘😘😘
@DebinHawaii #5joysfriday
It‘s Saturday morning in wintery Western Australia, but I have some weekly joys to share:
1. Watching this cormorant find the only patch of sun to dry itself.
2. Waking up to this double rainbow 🌈🌈.
3. Celebrating the start of two weeks holiday with my husband, & my promotion. I‘m a ‘Senior School Psychologist‘ 😁.
4. This sunrise 🌅😍.
5. Plasma donation number 6 for 2024 💛💪.
Wanna share some joy @Rissreads @Jeg ?
I clearly remember being assigned Morrison‘s novel “Song of Solomon” in 8th grade English: I couldn‘t recall the story now but I can recall the feelings of nostalgia, beauty, contemplation the book drew from me (which is hard to do in a 14 year old)! This book of essays has not replicated that (I think Morrison is a better fiction writer than essayist) but it still doesn‘t take away from the pleasure of, in a way, “being in her company.”
Truly it was an honor to get to read an early copy of Have a beautiful, terrible day.
A collection of blessings and reflections, this book can be devoured in a sitting or taken bit by bit, depending on your mood. There were so, so many blessings that spoke to the weariness in my spirit, that made me feel seen and understood.
And thank you to the publisher Convergent and to NetGalley for the digital ARC - I‘m so grateful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
