On the eve of Election Day, here is a wrap up of the books that I read as part of my #OpenCitizen project. The books that I currently own are in the picture above. Books read, but returned to the library, include:
MARCH BOOKS 1-3 by John Lewis
MY OWN WORDS by Ruth Bader Ginsburg
THE ESSENTIAL DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR by Alison Bechdel
FUN HOME by Alison Bechdel
GEORGE by Alex Gino

Amandajoy What was the Open Citizen Project? 8y
vivastory I don't buy graphic novels as much as non-graphic novels but March is on my to buy list. John Lewis is one of the most inspiring current US politicians. 8y
Reviewsbylola I love this idea. 8y

BooksForYears @Amandajoy OpenCitizen was a self-imposed 4-week reading challenge that ends today. I was devoting 100% of my reading to important political topics: Feminism, diversity, LGBTQIA, and more - and tagging those posts with #OpenCitizen in honor of author Günter Grass' famous quote - "The job of a citizen is to keep his [and her] mouth open." 8y
BooksForYears @vivastory There's a gorgeous boxed set that I have on my holiday wish list 😍 8y
vivastory @BooksForYears That is the one I want. That's a perfect holiday gift idea. It sold out on Amazon right away when it first came out. 8y
SharonGoforth That's an awesome project! 8y

Another from my #NonFictionNovember #TBR - I own a physical copy, but am listening to this on audio so I can squeeze in another #OpenCitizen read before Election Day tomorrow.

saresmoore I remember really liking this read. And you knitted (?) backdrop is lovely! 8y
queerbookreader I am obsessed with her omg. I had to read part of this for a political philosophy class and I loved it 8y
BooksForYears @saresmoore I wish I could knit something like this. I am admittedly textile-challenged, so I bought this shawl. 8y

saresmoore @BooksForYears Well, I happen to love crocheting shawls and live in a humid subtropical climate. 🙃 If you have a need or want, I'd be happy to make you one! 8y
mklong If you love Wollstonecraft, check out this excellent biography of her and her daughter Mary Shelley 8y
BooksForYears @mklong Thanks for the rec! 8y
TheLudicReader I read Vindication in university. Good times. 8y

Next up for #NonFictionNovember and #SignedSunday is a book published not long after I finished Colson Whitehead's THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. The author is local, and he and I chatted for quite awhile during his signing and talk at my favorite indie bookstore. It's a slim book, and hopefully will be a good companion to Cora's fictional story.

The Empathy Exams: Essays | Leslie Jamison
post image
Mehso-so

The concept of empathy is a common thread that runs throughout the book, especially seeing the humanity in others. While I generally enjoyed this collection of essays, I connected most with the pieces where the author seemed to take the most care and effort in trying to view a situation from another's perspective. I really enjoyed the writing style and the clarity of the author's voice throughout.

shawnmooney You expressed your feelings much more diplomatically that I did when I panned this book a couple minutes ago. Good for you! :-) 8y
ReadingEnvy I liked the pain essay, but that's the one I remember. 8y
Mcoun I waited for this book on hold for about 2 months. I think there were maybe two essays that I liked. The one I remember is the one about people with Morgillons Syndrome. 8y

half_book_and_co I read it some time ago and still think about it. The writing style really resonated with me. 8y
Eyglo I just bought this book and had very high hopes...but at least it sounds like it has some good points! 8y
BooksForYears @Eyglo It's definitely a worthwhile read. It's rare that I love every essay in a collection, and this was no different. 8y

#PhotoADayNov16 Day 1 - November TBR (part 2)

Not only is it #TBRTuesday but it's the first day of #NonFictionNovember - here is my (overly ambitious) non-fiction #TBR.

Each of the reads fits into the four categories for Non-Fiction November: New, Controversial, Important, and Fascinating. The only book not pictured is OUTLAW MARRIAGES by Roger Streitmatter, as I'll be reading that on my e-reader.

BooksForYears @Eyelit I try to sneak in a few Persephones whenever possible 😇 8y
kspenmoll Maus wonderful; Wollstonecraft as well. Let us know about Empathy ...📚 8y
the_hibernator Is Maus considered nonfiction? 8y
BooksForYears @the_hibernator It is... a graphic memoir/creative nonfiction hybrid (at least that's how I'm filing it 🙂) 8y

My October reads were a solid mix of awesomeness! There are graphic memoirs, graphic novel, non-fiction, historical fiction, feminist satirical poetry, memoir, and feminist religious criticism - all dealing with topical and complicated issues. I can't wait to see what November brings!

#Booktober Day 30 - Best of October

These books are definitely my favorite reads of the month, and most likely will reappear on my Best Reads of 2016 list. They share some commonalities - all are non-fiction, and all shine a bright light onto the struggles against endemic racism, sexism, poverty, and class as they exist throughout the US but especially in the Deep South.

#OpenCitizen #BesrOfOctober #MenWeReaped #March

Crystalblu March was amazing! 8y
JackieSmith I really want to read The Men We Reaped, but I need to mentally prepare myself for what I know will be an emotional experience. 8y
