Long ago, the town of Lucille banished all the monsters. When a painting of Jam‘s mother comes to life intent on hunting a new monster, Jam must decide who to believe.

A powerful story about what makes a monster & how a monster can hide when we don‘t have the words to talk about them. I loved Jam & Redemption, & I really appreciated the ending. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕

As a lifelong reader, I don't think I have ever read a book that's so evocative. I'm a wreck.

Young love. Protection of one's secret. Acceptance, (makes you wonder, is it really "better to be late than never?") Corrupt religious practices (beating the sin out). Grief. Deep, bone-crushng grief. Unconditional love of the parents.

Every child in the LGBTQ+ community should be able to be themselves. To form their own identity. To be accepted.

I read the first chapter, describing Feyi's first sexual encounter since the death of her husband in an accident five years before. Didn't care enough to continue. DNF

5/5 ⭐️ I absolutely loved this book! While it is a romance, it's more about grief and the journey to love again after you lose someone. Also I love the friendship between Feyi and Joy! So glad I read this one! #queerbc

This book was not written for me, so of course I struggled with it. And I'm totally fine with that. I think for those who need this story, it'll give them a lot. I was a bit lost between the Nigerian ghosts and gods, but also somehow fascinated. It's a unique read for me, but I'm not sure if I would another book by this author.

Jari-chan @Liz_M Thank you for the tip. I might give it a try. 6d
Pogue When I read this it was confusing, but then I read her book Pet and it cleared up much of Freshwater. I wish I had read Pet first. 6d
Jari-chan @Pogue Oh, I wanted to read Pet, but it wasn't available 😕 6d

Lily's self-discovery as a Chinese-American lesbian in early 1950s San Francisco.

A map of SF would definitely have helped. Location obviously had an important effect on how Lily was feeling at various points in the story but the street names didn't really help me locate myself. But still an interesting and engaging story. I did spend quite some time unsure whether the title meant yesterday evening or the final appearance/performance.
