The one with the long legs is at home and #GhostCat is blissfully conked out.

I guess that means I'll be able to get lots of things done around the house while listening to an #audiobook.

My #Roll100 #67, I actually finished it a few days ago but between being work busy & trying to figure what I think about it, I hadn‘t posted it yet. I‘m still unpacking my feelings about this one. It is beautifully written & I loved the natural elements, but I hadn‘t read any reviews before starting & it ended up being much heavier & darker than I thought & I don‘t think I was emotionally ready for it. ⬇️

DebinHawaii …There were a lot of triggers from domestic abuse to sexual assault & A LOT of animal death (which is something I struggle with reading about). I felt pretty wrecked after reading the second half especially. I also thought the beginning was stronger than the end. Still, all that aside it‘s a pick for being well researched & written & making me think & feel. 🩶🐺 16h

The Noh Mask Murder | Akimitsu Takagi
post image
Pickpick

An old seaside mansion. Dark gothic atmosphere. An exotic setting. Sinister locked-room mystery. Depraved and broken characters. A public prosecutor in search of the truth. Unreliable narrators.
Japan, unsettled nation during the aftermath of WWII. Multiple elaborate murders. Elegant, refined prose. An outstanding translation.
...

Yuki_Onna Continued:
Eerieness creeps through the pages like the seaside mist underlying the story.
Historical murder mystery, social commentary, character study, domestic thriller, gothic literature.
Maybe the perfect book for the perfect time exists. The Noh Mask Murder has it all.
5/5⭐

Finished last night & read with #ChildrensClassicRead2024
I hadn‘t read (or been read to) Heidi since I was a small child or seen the movie in eons so it was fun to go back to the Alps with Heidi. She is adorable but I forgot how much of a little butt head Peter was! Lots of charm, sweet & fun. Who doesn‘t love an alpine field with flowers & goats?!? Just mean old Miss Rottenmeier I guess!!💛🐐🌱🐐🌼🏔️

Finished today for #Naturalitsy #LitSolace #SpringEquinox I‘ve been listening to it in my car mostly as I run errands & It‘s a pleasant listen (narrated by the author) & free on Audible but now, I might want a print copy as I feel I may have missed out on the illustrations. As someone who battles depression, I can relate to the author & how the beauty of nature can improve mood & mental outlook. Lovely.💚

PurpleyPumpkin I also embrace nature‘s healing power. Taking a walk outside is so therapeutic and relaxing. Thanks for mentioning that this is available on Audible. I‘ve added it to my library and will listen to it soon!🍃 4d

The Other Valley: A Novel | Scott Alexander Howard
post image
Mehso-so

Odile lives in an unnamed valley close to a lake. East of the valley is the exact same valley, just 20 years in the future. West of the lake is 20 years in the past. Citizens can petition to visit the valley to the East or West under special circumstances and after consideration and under strict security conditions by the Conceil.
Odile notices such visitors one day after school and identifies who they are, and by that... ⬇️

julesG ... that her friend from school will die.

Speculative Fiction about time's progress and whether we should or even can interfere with it.

What made me put this down over and over again was that there are no punctuation marks or indentations that indicate dialogue. I know this is a current trend, but it's annoying when you have to track back half a paragraph because you did not notice there was dialogue until the end of it.

TrishB That current trend needs to be over! 5d
julesG @TrishB Yes, sooner rather than later. 5d
Bookwomble @TrishB Seconded! (Actually, thirded!) 5d
Lindy I just picked up my library hold but haven‘t started reading it yet. I checked just now to see the dialogue style in the Canadian edition and it‘s without dialogue marks. In general, I don‘t mind, although it depends on the author‘s skill. I find the absence tends to contribute to my immersion in the story rather than detracting from it. 4d
julesG @Lindy It might be easier when you read the finished novel. The eARC had strange line breaks and that made the missing dialogue "landmarks" even more of a nuisance. 4d
Lindy @julesG Yes, digital ARCs can be rough 4d
