It‘s no surprise that this Steinbeck was a pick as I have enjoyed almost all I have read so far.* Ethan Allen Hawley comes from a wealthy old New England family, but there is no longer wealth, just a name and the home he shares with his wife and 2 children. Ethan is a grocery store clerk and is scrupulously honest. Until one spring/summer, when he sets in to motion a plan to restore a little of that wealth. #MyPartnerPickedIt
pickI love to read Steinbeck‘s writing. This collection of stories allows the reader to witness as the young boy, Jody, learns life lessons. The lessons can be harsh. The story of Gabilan was particularly gut-wrenching. Through it all, I was just reminded of how much I love the way Steinbeck puts words together and views the world. Truly beautiful.
1. I learned how to drive a car on a manual. My dad took us to a local street, parked on a hill, and then said, “ok, now drive.” 😖 Anyone who has ever driven stick knows that once you have mastered the art of not rolling backwards on an incline, you‘re golden. 😀
2. Had to tag this book. Although it was a van, not a car. That still counts, right?

pick“The Winter of Our Discontent”, technically it‘s a reread but because it‘s been more than 20 years it read almost like a new story. A story of a man lost between a glorious past of his ancestors and brutal present of not only his diminished status, but also a struggle to gain his place in the world. He finds out he can take certain steps to make gain but nothing comes without price. I loved this book before and I loved it now.

pickFirst time reading this and I've not seen either movie version so I only vaguely knew the story and the book is not quite what I expected. But I did very much enjoying the descriptive writing.
