The Motel Life: A Novel | Willy Vlautin
post image
Pickpick

Here is another audiobook from the haze that was February. It‘s a gritty tale of two brothers who have been surviving on their own since their teens. Everything gets turned upside down early one morning when one of them has an accident. The book walks a fine line by making the reader empathize with everything the main characters have been through while not hiding how absolutely stupid and horrible some of their decisions are.

Percival Everett really is a must read.

Wounded is a modern western about John, a black horse trainer who lives with his uncle in Wyoming. He is tolerated but when a gay man is brutally murdered the atmosphere in town turns grimly. John cannot ignore it. In the mean time his life gets busy with guests on his farm, animals and love.
And all his characters are so fabulous again. I am saying it again: I love Everett!

BarbaraBB @Christine Thank you 💕 1mo
Suet624 This sounds just up my alley. A horse trainer, a farm, animals, love. Come on, Percival! 1mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 It‘s an oldie (2005) so I guess one of your libraries must have a copy waiting for you! 1mo
Suet624 Well, believe it or not, none of them have it. I just ordered a copy from Blackwells. 1mo

#WeeklyForecast 05/25

On this lazy Sunday I started The Family Experiment, John Marrs‘s most recent book. Next will be one from another author whose backlist I am making my way through. I came upon this cheap edition of this Percival Everett so had no choice but to buy it.
Bury Your Gays is another one from the #ToB25Longlist which is excellent this year.

TrishB Enjoy 😁 1mo
squirrelbrain I hope you like Bury Your Gays! 🤞 Well, I hope you like all of them - you know what I mean! 🤪 1mo

In Watershed, Everett draws parallels between the current and historic treatment of both Black and Native Americans in the US. And, of course, he still infuses the book with his trademark humor. This was terrific, and I‘m not surprised—the man is a marvel.

Butterfinger I can't believe I have not heard of him till James. I'm going to redeem that. 2mo
JenP He‘s a brilliant author 2mo
Amiable My friend just gave me this one and said it was really good —have you read it yet? 2mo

BarbaraBB He‘s so good. We‘re lucky he has such an extensive backlist! 2mo
Hooked_on_books @Butterfinger I only discovered him a couple of years ago with The Trees and he‘d already been writing for decades. I‘ve been trying to redeem that as well. 2mo
Hooked_on_books @Amiable I haven‘t read it yet, but I have it. I‘m thinking I‘ll read that one in February. I‘ll try to remember to tag you in my review! 2mo
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I‘m sad that it took me so long to find him but THRILLED that he has so many books for me to explore! He‘s incredible. 2mo

Another gem found in a neighborhood #LittleFreeLibrary ! I‘d never even heard of this one, but if Everett writes it I will read it. Grateful today to be outside in the currently fresh air in San Diego, even as I‘m feeling so much sadness for our northern neighbors, including some good friends who lost family homes. 💔

AmyG Devastating 😞 2mo
Butterfinger I'm so sorry. It is all so sad. 2mo
Hooked_on_books I completely agree about PE. I‘ll read anything he writes. 2mo

ImperfectCJ I can relate to the simultaneous gratitude and sadness. Family back east keep asking if we're okay in San Diego, and when I say we are and that our college kid is safe at school so far, too, I feel it acutely, almost a guilt at feeling grateful to be safe (so far) when such destruction is happening only a couple of hours away. And of course knowing that our safety is contingent on something as capricious as wind patterns. 2mo
BkClubCare I found this book last year and because it was PE I took it home. Thought it was great. Our hearts go out to all with threats of 🔥- very sad in so many ways. 2mo
sarahbarnes I‘ve never heard of this one by him either - what a find! So terrifying what is happening. 💔 My daughter is just south of LA. 2mo
monalyisha I always have trouble remembering where Littens are and keeping in mind the little details that make up their lives. It‘s part of why I love #AuldLangSpine. It brings a particular person into focus. I‘m sorry that I‘m learning *now* that you‘re in California, that I didn‘t reach out sooner, and that the details that make up your life are actually quite big right now. Sending love. 💗 Hoping against hope for increased climate justice. 2mo
Christine @AmyG @Butterfinger So heartbreaking and beyond overwhelming for those affected. 2mo
Christine @Hooked_on_books I feel lucky to have only read three of his so far! So much goodness to come. 2mo
Christine @ImperfectCJ Well said. So concerned about what the next few days will bring. 2mo
Christine @BkClubCare How fun that you found this one too and even better that you enjoyed! And yes, so much sadness and the enduring uncertainty is so hard. 2mo
Christine @sarahbarnes Feels like an embarrassment of yet-to-be-discovered riches when it comes to Everett! And sending good wishes to your daughter, hope all are able to escape further disaster over the next few days. 2mo
Christine @monalyisha It's so hard to keep track of where everyone is (region or country! :)! And I love that perspective re: #AuldLangSpine ! So true. We're so far unaffected in San Diego, though inland areas have warnings re: this next round of winds that's arriving. And yes, climate justice is so needed. We are all at risk wherever we live. 😔 2mo

Thank you for the tag last week @CoffeeK8 ! And thank you for doing this @DebinHawaii ! I love reading everyone‘s joys each week 💛

kspenmoll I afore cranberry anything! Lovely list! 4mo
tpixie Starbucks has a new cranberry drink. I think the spices are a little heavy on cinnamon, but it was a fun change from a strawberry refresher. Frozen cranberries in plain Greek yogurt is really good. ❤️❤️❤️ 4mo
CoffeeK8 That lunch location looks so cozy for the fall! 4mo

Daisey I love cranberries this time of year as well. I canned some juice last week and am planning on a batch of cranberry eggnog bread soon. 4mo

DebinHawaii A lovely list of fall joys! 💛💛💛Cranberries are perfect this time of year! Thanks for joining in. 🤗 3mo
mabell @kspenmoll Same! Do you have any favorite recipes? 3mo
mabell @tpixie Oh I may have to try that! I rarely get the cold drinks (I‘m a big mocha fan!), but that one sounds fun for the season! And I never would have thought of frozen cranberries with yogurt! 3mo
mabell @CoffeeK8 It was! They also had tower heaters that were very welcome 😄 3mo
mabell @Daisey Wow - how did you can juice?? And please share your bread recipe! What a unique combo! I think cranberries would be perfect for balancing rich eggnog 3mo
Daisey This is one of my favorite winter quick breads! https://www.yourcupofcake.com/eggnog-cranberry-bread/ 3mo
Daisey I used the simpler method to can one batch of juice and it should be ready just in time for Christmas. https://practicalselfreliance.com/canning-cranberry-juice/ 3mo
tpixie @mabell your wee one with the puppy is adorable 🥰 3mo
tpixie @Daisey thanks for the recipe! I love both cranberries & eggnog! But I‘ve never had them together!!! 3mo
mabell @tpixie They are my sweethearts! She loves him so much, and he loves her when food is involved 😂 3mo
mabell @Daisey I‘ve printed the bread recipe! I just have to pick up a couple of ingredients & I‘m definitely making that this week! The simpler method sounds like a fun, tasty experiment! If I were more comfortable canning, I‘d do it. Once I‘ve done some canning, I‘ll try the drink too! I wonder how it would be with some spices added with the sugar. You‘ll have to report back on how this is too! (I don‘t remember if you mentioned you had made it before) 3mo
Daisey @tpixie @mabell I hope you both enjoy the bread! As for the juice, I‘ve read about people making fruit blends and spiced versions (although you need to be careful to keep acid content because of water bathing), but I‘ve only made plain cranberry myself. 3mo

A sad story in the end. If not the book, then the author. The story of a cancer survivor who decides to commemorate this by walking from Washington DC to New York City and write about the people he met and the places he saw. The book was published in 2023. the authors cancer relapsed and he died this year.
