This book would serve much better as a reference book. I skimmed through a lot to find stories that were appealing. Still a lot of interesting stories of the earlier years of this part of the country.

The Three Witches | Zora Neale Hurston, Joyce Carol Thomas

Pickpick

I liked this old, black folk tale adapted for children from a series of oral folktales collected by Zora Neale Hurston. The illustrations are perfectly suited to the story. I would love to track down and listen to the original collected by Hurston.

KrystleTheBookSlayer Didn't really care for this one either. 😔 6y
Bookdragon69 I‘ve never read the book but I saw the movie for the first time at the age of 13 and it scared the living daylights out of me. 😱 6y
Wellreadhead I‘ve never seen any of the movies. (edited) 6y

An interesting book that draws heavily on the 1930s Virginia Writers Project. More than 500 stories were studied and a pattern of belief in witches played a role in the story. Hence, this fascinating book that delves into American Folklore.

🌒I've been intrigued from page one learning from stories how to become a witch, how witches work, how to counteract witchcraft, and witchcraft for money and mischief. It's a pretty neat glimpse into folklore

LeahBergen What a great cover! 7y
Jess_Read_This @LeahBergen Thank you! It is a super interesting book! 7y

Treasury of Superstitions (Revised) | Claudia Delys, Claudia De Lys

Here's a few books about signs, symbols, omens, and superstitions from the occult section of my writing reference bookshelves. I found it amusing that when I was adding books to my Goodreads shelves, the tagged book ended up being the 666th book I entered. If I were #superstitious, I'd probably be a bit freaked out. 🙀#SpookyOctober

DuckOfDoom Oh, can you tag the specific books? I love good scientific books about the occult 😄 7y

TK-421 @quirkyreader Yes, now that you mention it, I think I did. Thanks! I'd forgotten where they came from. 7y
TK-421 @rubyslippersreads Thanks! 😊 7y
TK-421 @DuckOfDoom this one (Dictionary) and A to Z of the Occult have lots of interesting historical information about occult subjects. Unfortunately, I can't find the A to Z book in the Litsy or Goodreads databases. It's by Graham Weaver, published in the UK in 1975. (edited) 7y
RealBooks4ever Love your pic! 😻 7y
TK-421 @DuckofDoom This one is more of a New Age take on things, but it's got lots of illustrations and it's organized into different sections (for example, Alchemy, Astrology, Christian, Norse, Witchcraft, etc.) (edited) 7y
TK-421 @DuckofDoom Another New Age book, with lots of information and illustrations 7y
TK-421 @RealBooks4ever Thanks! 😊 7y
DuckOfDoom Thanks!! The books look really interesting 😄 7y

Many of these are still on my #TBR list (including the tagged book). Not shown are several I have enjoyed; they're missing because my husband is reading them. We have a thing for #FablesandFolklore, fairy tales, myths and legends. #UncannyOctober

RealBooks4ever Great selection right there! 😻 7y

#fairytales #americanfolklore #mythsandlegends This book is beautifully illustrated, with depictions of characters spanning over 100 years, illustrations showing different interpretations. I've had this for over 10 years and love going through it at this time of year also great is The Penguin Dictionary of American Folklore 📚❤️

readinginthedark I've never heard of that Penguin Dictionary! That sounds awesome! 8y
TheLondonBookworm I'd love a copy of this! Everywhere I travel to I try and find some copy of local myths/legends/ fairytales what ever is on offer! 8y

DeborahSmall @TheLondonBookworm I think I bought this when I was home in Glasgow one weekend 👍🏼 @readinginthedark I bought the dictionary at the best indie bookstore in Belfast, No Alibis, he specialises in crime, noir particularly and also diverse American lit and anything he can find on America that's different 😊. Also a huge range of Neil Gaiman. So my favourite place in Belfast 📚❤️ 8y
readinginthedark @DeborahSmall Wow! That sounds awesome; I've never been to Ireland! 8y
