Happy new year, everyone! I made a 2026 bracket template for those who would like one.

Each month, choose the best book you read that month and repost this graphic with your book added to the appropriate box. They will face off against each other until one is crowned the best book you read all year. There are also two “bonus” spaces to even up the matches!

#readingbracket #readingbracket2026
#bookbracket #bookbracket2026

Amiable Yay! Can you make another in a different color? I track fiction and NF separately. 😬 21h

CSeydel @LeeRHarry Thanks for playing along! I love seeing everyone‘s choices each month. Happy new year to you as well! 20h
Soubhiville Oh two colors! I like this one better, but maybe I‘ll do as @Amiable is doing… 😁📚 20h
Amiable @Soubhiville I have to separate the genres —it‘s too hard for me to compare them equally. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😀 20h
GingerAntics Ooooooooh, I like this one even better!!! 20h
CSeydel @Soubhiville @GingerAntics Thanks! This was the original 2026 design, but I made a second color scheme for people like @amiable who do separate fiction and nonfiction brackets 20h
GingerAntics @CSeydel I was just thinking that. Having the two different colors would help keep them separate. Love that so much!!! 20h
CSeydel @Amiable I know what you mean - when I do a single bracket my nonfiction reads always win. But when I tried to do two brackets, I realized I don‘t read more than one NF per month - and sometimes it takes me a couple of months to read a really good one. 20h

All About Me #AuldLangSpine introduction :)

You can tell from this photo that I have GenZ-aged kids. Why they love taking these fisheye photos, I‘ll never understand, but my camera roll is full of them 😆 This was taken in an airport during a trip my youngest and I took to visit my middle child on the east coast.

1. My name is Caroline Seydel: both names have the long-I sound, but mostly people don‘t pronounce them that way. cont‘d ⬇️

britt_brooke Love the pic! 😂 1d
CSeydel 2. I‘ve lived in Los Angeles for 25 years. I thought I would hate it here, but I‘m quite fond of it. Mostly.

3. My husband and I have been married 27 years. We still celebrate the anniversary of our first date

4. I used to be a Molecular biologist, but now I write news stories for biotech magazines
1d
CSeydel 5. I love live music and my youngest daughter is helping me stay current on some really great indie bands. Being in LA we have lots of opportunities to go to shows at little clubs or iconic venues like the Hollywood Bowl

CSeydel @britt_brooke Thanks! It‘s so flattering 1d
CSeydel @sebrittainclark I hope you‘ll share a little too so we can get acquainted. Happy new year! 🥂🎉 1d
CSeydel 6. My side of the family is English Canadian and every year for NYE our tradition is to have a plum pudding - those rich, dense, steamed cakes bursting with dried fruit. You douse it in brandy and light it, and if it makes it to the table before the flames go out, you‘ll have good luck in the new year! 1d
Amiable My husband and I celebrate the anniversary of our first date, too! 1d
Lesliereadsalot Thanks for sharing. I loved reading about who you are. When I was in my 30s I had a friend who worked in radio in New York and she would send me all the up and coming band names who were touring in Chicago. So I saw tons of music in small venues, before they became stars. Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Blondie, Ry Cooder to name a few. 1d
CSeydel @Lesliereadsalot That sounds amazing! 21h
CSeydel @Amiable It‘s fun, isn‘t it? Like a little secret anniversary for just the two of us 21h
LinesUponAPage Welcome to Litsy! From a fellow Gen X, you are going to love it here!! Music is the soundtrack to my life since the day I was born, so I feel ya on staying in the know about new bands. My husband and I celebrate our first date too and it was 37 years ago! It was my birthday so there is that. 😆 (edited) 20h
CSeydel @LinesUponAPage Oh lol yes that makes it a doubly good time to celebrate! 20h

Passage | Connie Willis
post image

December‘s winner is PASSAGE by Connie Willis.

This isn‘t my favorite Willis — not even top 3, honestly — but it was still entertaining and thought-provoking and full of all the Willis-isms we have come to expect. Speaking of which, I kept having to remind myself when it was written, since people kept getting “busy signals” when they tried to call each other, which is super anachronistic even for 2001 (sorry Connie).

CSeydel Oh yeah and my 2025 winner is (no surprise here) 2d
Amiable “Challenger” was my bracket winner in 2024 and “Hellhound” won it all in 2023! I‘m so glad I didn‘t have to choose between them like you did! 😀 (Although if I did, I think “Hellhound” would come out on top.) 1d

My great #auldlangspine list from @sebrittainclark

I‘ve already read Everything is Tuberculosis and Project Hail Mary, and I loved both of them. A good sign!

For January I'm going to try for Britt-Marie Was Here, Automatic Noodle, The Mercy of Gods, Kill the Beast, and the Ina Garten memoir. There‘s quite a long wait list for Kill the Beast at my library, though, so if I can‘t get it right away, I‘ll sub in Where the Axe is Buried.

Oh dear. When you enthusiastically recommend a book to a friend, is it worse if the friend doesn‘t read it, or reads it and isn‘t impressed?

A friend recently listened to this book and recommended it in the most glowing terms. She loved it so much that when she finished it, she immediately started it over from the beginning. I‘m listening to it and it IS good, but I‘m not blown away. I‘m getting frustrated with the MC … but maybe that‘s the point

Ruthiella I didn‘t love this one either. You are not alone. 1mo

In Cold Blood | Truman Capote

Pickpick

Absolutely tremendous narrative nonfiction about a botched robbery, a senseless mass murder, and the two young men responsible. Capote successfully navigates a sensational high-wire act: he writes complex, deeply humanizing portrayals of the murderers without seeming to excuse their actions, neglect the victims, or minimize the horrific crime. I found it fascinating how a variety of circumstances lined up just so, leading to the murders. 5⭐️

Mehso-so

I did end up finishing it, but the humor wasn‘t really on my wavelength. Pros were the creative premise and some of the comical scenarios; cons were the crass humor, the unlikeable cast, and the “twist” that is obvious to the reader long before the MC figures it out. Also the downside of a creative premise is that it‘s easy to get out over your skis and wind up with some very weird explaining to do. 2⭐️

CSeydel It doesn‘t help that the cover basically gives away the “twist.” I wonder if it was an intentional choice by the author, that the reader knows what‘s going on before Charlie does? I suppose that does fit with the wacky-sitcom mood he has created, so yeah, probably. 2mo

Got to catch up with my #GrimReaders reviews before #HauntedShelf ends!

Reaper Man was a solid Discworld installment, full of Pratchett‘s signature satire and wordplay, but I felt the plot was a little all over the place. There was a wizard/Ankh-Morpork storyline and a Death storyline, and the balance between them felt uneven. That said, even a second-tier Pratchett is a worthwhile read. 3⭐️

I‘ll probably give this book one or two more chapters, but I‘m within a hair‘s breadth of bailing. Maybe my sense of humor is lacking, but I don‘t find anything funny about giving a two-week old baby a cocktail sausage and making jokes about her giving a Teletubby a blow job. FFS

CSeydel It‘s bad enough as idle idiocy but Jane is doing this while Charlie is trying to share his horror that a man he was talking to got hit by a bus before his eyes. Instead of listening she makes sex jokes about his two-week old daughter (whose mother, Charlie‘s wife, died in childbirth, so he‘s still dealing with that). There‘s “black humor” and then there‘s just … whatever this is. 2mo
Bookwomble Comedians and humourists often say that you can make a joke out of anything, but this quotation demonstrates that just because you can, doesn't mean you should! 🤢 2mo

This sequel to Mickey7 was GREAT! Definitely read Mickey7 first, but if you liked that one, you will not want to miss this story, which takes place about 2 years later. I would say this one has more action and adventure than Mickey7, but definitely includes some of the philosophical and socio-political musings that made the first one so interesting. I‘m now 3 for 3 in books that didn‘t live up to my high hopes. I‘m giving it a pick because I learned exactly what went on in Flint that probably caused the lead crisis, but the narrative was all over the place and the tone was off. She tries to strike a conversational, storytelling tone but I found it a little too informal in places, and she comes across a little bit manic, impulsively shooting off e-mails and such

My #AHRS2025 package arrived today, somewhat damp from our big rain today, but none the worse for wear, I think.

I meant to send mine over the weekend, but I didn‘t manage it. Tomorrow for sure.

@MommyOfTwo I think this came from you? I‘m so excited! Thank you :)

MommyOfTwo Yes it did! I usually keep my name off the box for these but forgot this time. Oh well. 3mo

I had high hopes for this one, but the ending left me cold. It was extremely well-written and I enjoyed both Zelu‘s and Ankara‘s storylines. Most of the book told a rich, evocative story brimming with symbolism, techno-optimism and philosophical commentary on what it means to be human and the purpose of stories in human and post-human culture. The last two chapters took that and turned it into a goofy joke.

CSeydel The breathtaking scientific illiteracy of the gene therapy gimmick enraged me, too. 3mo

Finished this one Thursday, I just didn‘t get a chance to post about it. This is a collection of short mystery/crime stories largely set in Scotland or by authors with a connection to Scotland. Many of them were very good; a few were disappointing, partly because they just hit different 70+ years later.

At the risk of outing myself as the most basic of basic white b****es, this is what I‘ve been listening to last night and today. I love it and I don‘t care

#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude

(Lest you think I‘m trapped in the past, I also listened to Life of a Showgirl yesterday in the car with my daughter)

lil1inblue I adore The Beatles. 🥰 I got my first adult library card in 4th grade because I wanted to read a John Lennon biography and there weren't any in the children's department. 3mo
shortsarahrose I was going to say if you were basic, you‘d be listening to Life of a Showgirl - but then you said you were! No judgement! I‘m also listening to it! 🧡 And love the Beatles, of course! 3mo
CSeydel @shortsarahrose I‘m multitalented! I can be basic in any decade 😂😂 3mo

DrSabrinaMoldenReads I am not as you describe yourself but I love the Beatles too! 😘 3mo

TieDyeDude Ha, I'm in the minority. I'm not a fan of the Beatles. I can appreciate their impact on music, and they are inarguably talented, but I tend to prefer covers of Beatles songs over the original recordings. Don't know why... but nothing “basic“ about them. Maybe watching the 8 hour Peter Jackson documentary would change my mind? 😆😬 3mo
Bookwomble No apologies needed for listening to the Fab Four! I'd say they are foundational rather than basic 😊 3mo
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude You should absolutely watch Get Back! 😁 3mo
