The tone was a little bit sillier than your usual haunted house tale. The MC has accepted the presence of a slew of ghosts (mostly murdered children, mostly harmless) as the price of living in her dream house. When her husband goes missing, her daughter shows up to investigate, throwing all her careful routines for coexisting with the ghosts into chaos. But … why isn‘t she more curious about her husband‘s whereabouts?

CSeydel The idea was clever, but the writing was somewhat lacking. I never felt terror or suspense. There was a lot of dialogue between the MC and daughter, and it was pretty clunky. The daughter is supposed to be 30 but reads about ten years younger. Soft pick, fun for Halloween, but didn‘t really live up to the buzz. 1w
Texreader Bummer! I had stacked it. Should I keep it on my tbr? 1w
CSeydel @Texreader It‘s got a lot of enthusiastic 5-star reviews on Goodreads, so I would say if you want to read it, go ahead. It was a quick read if nothing else. And it was good, but it will depend on what you‘re looking for. There‘s no eerie mood or mounting dread that you typically expect from a haunted house story. There is a lot of carnage and graphic descriptions of mutilated children, so if you have a low tolerance for that, I‘d steer clear. 1w
See All 7 Comments
CSeydel @Texreader But I‘m looking at Goodreads and people are comparing it favorably with The Haunting of Hill House, which frankly makes no sense to me. Whether or not you enjoy Jackson (she‘s not for everyone, I know) the two books could not be more different. 1w

CSeydel @TieDyeDude Thanks! I am particularly glad to be done with this one because it dragged on. It was supposed to come out in July, but one of the companies whose technology I covered teased me a news announcement if I could hold off until after July 4, which my editor agreed to. #weekendreads Finished Things in Jars for #trappedinaspookyhouse (and September #bookspin). It took me a bit to get into the authors style and the Victorian setting, but by the end I was really impressed with how the plot threads wove together and events played out. It wasn‘t much of a “mystery” - the reader knows exactly what happened from page one - but that doesn‘t detract from the suspense. 4⭐️

Another solid thriller from SA Cosby. If you‘ve read his other books, you know what to expect: this one is equally violent, dark, well-plotted, and evocative as his previous novels. This one follows a small-town sheriff trying to track down a serial killer found operating out of his town. Sheriff Crown must simultaneously navigate racial tensions in his town and demons from his personal and professional past as he circles closer to the killer. 3⭐️

Connie Willis can be a little wordy, I admit, and there are times that what starts as running gag can start to feel a little dragged-out. But these are minor complaints in an overall well-written, cleverly plotted, ingeniously imagined scifi/historical fiction/romance/humor - let‘s just say, GENRE DEFYING - novel.

BkClubCare Yay!! I admit, this is a book I keep thinking about but then, nope …. Then I think about it again! One of these days, I *WILL* read it 🤣 1mo

I wasn‘t quite prepared at first for the precocious adolescent narrator, and it took me a little while to really get into the story. Once I gave it a chance, I really enjoyed the slice-of-life picture of growing up in 1940s England. I especially appreciated seeing the class differences through Jessica‘s eyes. Beautifully written and vividly imagined. Many of the issues Jessica grapples with map well onto 2020s adolescence. 4⭐️

CSeydel Side note: something was bothering the edges of my brain for the longest time - what else have I read by Jane Gardam?? The name is so familiar and yet I couldn‘t find any other titles of hers that I‘d read. I finally realized I “know” her from a modern homage - a title in a series my kids absolutely devoured when they were young: 2mo

CSeydel @tpixie Right? I always enjoy discovering little literary “Easter eggs” like that. 2mo
CSeydel @squirrelbrain I was very annoyed by the beginning. I actually put it down for a couple of weeks because I just couldn‘t bear the “omg so quirky and precocious” tone. But once I got into the groove of the time period, the emphatic precociousness seemed to settle down a bit, and the adventures kept me interested. I won‘t give spoilers but there are some very powerful episodes in the later chapters. 2mo
CSeydel @BarbaraBB I wonder why she isn‘t more of a household name in the US - not sure about the UK/Europe, but here I think she‘s rather underrated. I‘m looking forward to reading more of her work! 2mo
Lesliereadsalot Glad you liked it! 2mo

Slash and Burn is the 8th book in the Dr Siri Paiboun series, and I just love these books. This one had the main characters all together on an away mission, working with a group of Americans, which was a fun change of pace. The humor is right up my alley, the mystical element adds a certain eerie flair, and I always enjoy the 1970s Laos setting. Highly recommend!

I was disappointed by this one. The tone of the story never really gelled into anything coherent - based on the events of the plot, it seemed like a telenovela, but it lacked the wacky, over-the-top feel that would be needed to carry such an absurd collection of events. Instead everything was taken more or less straight, which felt jarring as characters repeatedly made stupid decisions. Also, the theme of “men are awful” got tiresome quickly.

CSeydel The reviews and jacket blurbs promised “laugh out loud funny” but I don‘t think I laughed once. I can appreciate dysfunctional families and unlikeable characters in hilarious situations, but in this case the dialogue was awkward and stilted and the scenes never achieved any sort of comic effect. (edited) 2mo

Another well-crafted, highly satisfying thriller from Gillian Flynn. I devoured it! The characters were incredibly frustrating, but I enjoyed following the twists and reveals as Libby reluctantly investigates the horrific murders that shaped her life. Naturally, the plot relies on some wild coincidences, but everything feels at least remotely plausible, and the psychology of the characters lands solidly. 4 stars!

My #bookspin from APRIL, lol

I enjoyed this one but it didn‘t grab me in the feels quite as much as Evelyn Hugo or Malibu Rising. The interview format worked really well since there were so many characters. I think the weakness came from not being able to hear and feel the music; so much of the plot revolved around the songwriting, and the songs were integral to the emotional study of Daisy in particular, but Billy as well. I just felt a step removed from the emotion.

CSeydel #bookspin (January (!!!)) 3mo
TieDyeDude I wasn't a fan. I liked the exploration of the characters' psychology, but I thought the characters themselves and the story beats were kind of cliché, and, yes, the lack of music was a weakness. I want to read her other books, but this didn't do much for me. 3mo
CSeydel @TieDyeDude Yeah, I think I agree. Things just seem to happen because they‘re supposed to be a certain way in a rock band story. I didn‘t consciously recognize it while I was reading, but after I finished I definitely had a sense that it was unsatisfactory in some indefinable way. Frankly, I found Graham and Karen‘s arc much more touching than Billy/Camila/Daisy‘s. And Eddie and Warren provided just the right amount of humor. (edited) 3mo

You‘ve heard of CSI:Miami. You‘ve heard of NCIS:New Orleans. This book is OMITB:Austin

Seriously, it would make a great show. There are some absolutely laugh-out-loud scenes - Tintera has a great sense of comic timing. The writing overall was a bit pedestrian, but the suspense was well-crafted. The book lurched this way and that as various characters fell under suspicion, and it seemed like the twist might be something truly original, but…

CSeydel … ultimately the ending veered back into safe, predictable chick lit territory, where all men are dangerous, one way or another, and if a woman does something bad it‘s always because a man drove her to it. 3mo

I almost DNFed this one because it gets pretty weird in places, a little too abstract for me, especially some of the flights of imagery that don‘t ultimately mean anything. But it was worth pushing through for the third act and that poignant final line that sums up the whole character arc.

I also learned that…

CSeydel the author‘s father is a close associate of Charles Manson, which added a certain heft to her portrayal of the “maniac demagogue in the desert” character. I‘m still not sure I‘d recommend this to everyone, but I‘m glad I read it and I think it covers a lot of ground as a psychological study of a culture and a work of eco-fiction. 5mo

Thanks to SiriusXM, Spotify premium, and podcasts, I rarely listen to over-the-air radio anymore. But my favorite station is still probably Classical KUSC. I kinda hate the bracket because I don‘t know how to compare books that are both excellent but completely different! Anyway, Man Who Fell is the winner for April! #LitsySciFiBookClub

Aims42 I gave up doing a bracket this year too for this exact same reason 😆 Now I just pick my favorite from the month and leave it at that. If at the end of the year I have a stand-alone favorite, great. If not, oh well 😇 6mo
CSeydel @Deblovestoread Yes! I have to remember just to have fun with it. I just end up doing it by feel and trying not to take it too seriously 😂 6mo

My #bookspin for May is Ruth Reichl‘s memoir Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table, which has been languishing on my shelf for more than five years. But my #doublespin is the tagged book, which I impulse-purchased a month ago based on how much I loved her book Our Fathers (thanks #europacollective!)

TrishB The tagged one is great too. I really love this author so far! 6mo
willaful Oh, I love Reichl's memoirs! I hope you'll be inspired to read them all after this. Comfort Me with Apples is a real heartbreaker. 6mo
CSeydel @TrishB @willaful I‘m excited for both of these! 6mo

Today I‘m revisiting an old favorite of mine, “Find a Way to My Heart” by Phil Collins, the powerful closing track from his incredible 1989 album “… But Seriously”. #tuesdaytunes

AmyG When my son was 3…he had a real thing for Phil Collins. I had to play the Invisible Touch cassette over and over in my car. We even took him to see Phil at Radio City Music Hall….he fell asleep during the break so we left. Thanks for the memories! 6mo
CSeydel @AmyG too cute! 6mo
TieDyeDude Phil Collins Greatest Hits was one of the albums everyone in the family could agree on listening to 😁 6mo
