This one ended up being a surprise win for me! While I didn't absolutely love it, I still found it an engaging and personable story with a likable MC. While there were definitely some of the prevalent attitudes from circa 1900, Kipling's genuine love for India and her people shines through on every page. I had no idea what to expect from this one, and while I would have probably benefited from better knowledge of the contemporary political ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) players, I still found the adventure to be great fun.

Thanks for reading this #RandomClassic with me, friends - sorry I didn't have very many discussion posts!! Did you end up finishing/enjoying it at all? Let me know what you thought!!

CatLass007 I‘m glad you enjoyed it. I think part of the reason I didn‘t was because I was listening to two books that take place in India, even though they are a few decades apart. And the coincidence of the narrator being the same for both books didn‘t help. In the past I used to read one book after the other whatever they were about. I used to read several books per week. This year my Goodreads goal was 50 books. I‘ve completed 103 so far, (cont) ⬇️ 1y
CatLass007 and counting. But all of them have been audiobooks. Being unable to focus on the printed word started around 30 years ago when I first started experiencing depression and anxiety. Every once in a while I‘ve been able to read an actual book but that has been a hit or miss thing. Yesterday, just yesterday, I committed to myself that I would read at least one of the three books written by my friend Richard Hood. He suggested that I start with 1y

CatLass007 I guess I started to say that as I‘ve gotten older I‘ve become more of a mood reader. And I only figured that out this summer. I may go back and try to listen to Kim again at some point in the future. I may not. There‘s just SO MUCH out there to read. 1y
TheSpineView Well done! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @CatLass007 - I've gotten way more into bailing on books over the last several years. So many good things to read out there and only so much time - I totally agree that you have to move on when something isn't jiving for you!! 1y
CatLass007 I used to never bail. I‘d stick with it until the bitter end. It‘s only in the last few years, especially once I joined Litsy, that I‘ve decided that bailing is not failing. It‘s not quitting. It‘s actually a way of protecting yourself and allowing yourself to move on. 1y

At first I thought this was going to be for me like The Three Musketeers- a book I could appreciate might encourage boys to read, but not my up of tea. But I‘m glad I kept going. In addition to the vivid descriptions of India, Kipling gave us very real, lovable, humans. The Llama‘s concern for Kim‘s soul; the horse trader‘s concern for Kim‘s temporal life, Kim‘s concern for everyone around him, warmed _my_ heart. Thanks @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I'm glad you enjoyed this one!! I didn't post very many discussion posts, but I also found this one surprisingly enjoyable. I wasn't expecting a spy novel! 😂 1y

I listened for 2 1/2 hours and decided to call it quits. Maybe if I had tried it at another time, I would have been able to enjoy it. When I was younger I read everything I could get my hands on. But I‘m more of a mood reader these days. Sorry, folks in #RandomClassics. Maybe next month‘s selection of The Scarlet Letter will better hold my attention.

TheAromaofBooks Sorry this one didn't click for you, but thanks for checking it out!! 1y
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Well, it did inspire me to think about listening to other Kipling books. There is a version of The Jungle Books 1 and 2 that‘s included with my Audible subscription. I‘ve added it to my library and hopefully I‘ll be more engaged with this one. 1y

(thru ch7) - Things continue to be crazy for me at work, but I've been sticking to this one, and actually really enjoying it. Kim's an engaging character to me. By choosing a character who is white, but who has been raised as a native, Kipling gives us multiple perspectives of India and its culture. I can see why some people view this book as problematic, but at the same time I can definitely sense Kipling's genuine love for India and its people.⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Plus, Kim himself is just such a fun, sassy, adventurous character. I also love the lama and his dedication to finding his River. Have you all been reading this one? Any thoughts so far?

I tried listening to the first chapter the night before last even though we were supposed to begin reading a chapter a day for the #RandomClassics #BuddyRead for September beginning today. I listened for 30 minutes and had to stop because it wasn‘t really sitting right with me. Today I listened to the entire first chapter and I‘m really intrigued. I can‘t wait to find out what happens next!

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! I'm so curious to see where this story goes!! 1y
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Me too! I read Kipling‘s Just So stories when I was a girl. I might go back and listen to them this time. Also, I‘d like to listen to The Jungle Book and Rikki Tikki Tavi. That is such a wonderful story. And, wow, I didn‘t know Kipling wrote Captains Coursgeous. 1y

September's #RandomClassic is Kim!! I've never read this one, although I have enjoyed Kipling's Jungle Books. The first chapter sets up a lot more adventure than I was anticipating, with a random spy in the midst of it! For some reason, I always love the rhythm of Kipling's dialogue. And hopefully my COMPLETE lack of knowledge about Hinduism and Buddhism isn't an issue! 😂

September is a busy month for me, but I'll be popping in with random ⬇

CatLass007 I started listening to the first chapter on Wednesday night. I guess I wasn‘t in the right frame of mind because it didn‘t hold my interest. Part of the reason is because I‘m not sure if the narrator has had any experience with the people he‘s voicing. It sounds very like a parody. I‘m going to give it another shot in the light of day. 1y
TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead - So, don't tell anyone, but I actually use this Random Classics thing as an excuse to buy a fun copy of a new classic every month 😂 1y

Here's the upcoming #RandomClassics schedule in case anyone else is interested in reading along!! On September 1 I'll be starting Kim by Rudyard Kipling. I've really enjoyed Kipling's humor and storytelling in the past, so although I'm sure some aspects of this will be “problematic“ to modern readers, I'm still looking forward to it!! I read a chapter a day until the book is finished. I don't have my copy yet, but I think there may only be 15 ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) chapters?? So we'll see. @BarkingMadRead I have you down for this one, so let me know if you'd still like to read along, since you seem to be as addicted to chapter-a-day buddy reads as I am! 😂

Still planning to read The Scarlet Letter starting in October, and Don Quixote starting in November. DQ has 125 chapters, plus prologues for both parts, so it is going to be quite the project!! Consequently, I've pushed Uncle Tom's Cabin back ⬇
1y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to January instead. I like having December for fluffy holiday reads, so I think DQ will be enough brain work for me for that month!!

If anyone would like to be added to the tag list for any specific book, let me know and I'll give you a reminder tag before we start!!
1y
BarkingMadRead I‘ve never read this before, so count me in! I‘m in for all of them, I think 1y

TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead - Yes, I have you down for everything!! 😂 I am already doing six chapter-a-day reads this month, and it looks like I'm on track for at least eight next month. I do NOT have a problem!! 😅 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Teresereading - I have tried to read Don Quixote several times and have never gotten past the first two or three chapters. I have a different translation this time. I've always tried to read my vintage edition from c1900, but it is the Charles Jervas translation... from 1742. So I'm hoping a slightly more modern translation will help!!! 😂 1y
TheAromaofBooks @SamAnne - I'll put you on the reminder list, and you can decide for sure when we get closer!!! It's going to be a serious journey!! I thought about upping it to two chapters a day, but I think we'll start with one and see how everyone feels about that. 1y
eeclayton Please remind me of DQ too! 1y
BarbaraJean I‘m so tempted to join in for Don Quixote. But I also don‘t have a buddy read problem, so… 😂 Although, Clarissa will be done by then, so that frees up a spot in the lineup!! 1y
squirrelbrain @CatLass007 - some more buddy reads for you here, if you‘re interested in classics. 1y
CatLass007 @squirrelbrain Thanks for tagging me. I would love to read Catch-22 again. I haven‘t read it in over 40 years. But that was for August, so I guess I‘ll have to read it on my own (sigh). I‘m definitely going to give DQ a try. Or maybe I‘ll just rewatch that episode of Quantum Leap. 1y
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Would you please tag me for this buddy read. Some of these books are on my list to read someday, and what better motivation than a buddy read. 1y
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - You're on the list!!! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - I put you on the list, so you can decide when we get closer. No hard feelings if you opt out 😂 Also my copy of Magic Island arrived today and it looks really interesting! I'm excited to read it next month. I've loved LMM's books all my life and it has been so engaging to actually read more about her and her life, even though a lot of it is sad. I kind of want to reread all her books again now 😆 1y
TheAromaofBooks @CatLass007 - I have you down for Don Quixote, and you can let me know if you're interested in any of the others!! My buddy reads are super low-key, I just post a couple times a week to touch base with whoever else is reading along. Not sure what other buddy reads you might like, but next month I'm reading Passage to India by E.M. Forster, The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler, an Austen-inspired mystery, and a romance with other groups, ⬇ 1y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) so if any of those tickle your fancy, let me know and I can direct you to the various hosts!! 1y
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks It looks like I can work in Kim also. I‘ve enjoyed other books by E.M. Forster, so I‘d like to know more about Passage to India. And I‘d enjoy finding out more about the Austen-inspired mystery. 1y
BarbaraJean Thank you!! I'll see how my reading schedule and I feel when November rolls around! 😆 I'm excited about Magic Island, too--I have a feeling it will make me want to re-read every book as I read each chapter! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @CatLass007 - Yay!! I'll put you down for Kim as well. Like I said, super chill, so you can always change your mind with no hard feelings 😂 @BarkingMadRead is hosting Passage to India next month as part of the #HashtagBrigade readalong (I can't find the post for it), and @StayCurious is hosting the read of The Murder of Mr. Wickham https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2622571 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Lcsmcat - I just realized that you were also on the tag list for Kim, but my brain apparently just didn't see you, despite being 50% of the people on the tag list 😂 Sorry about that - let me know if you're still interested!! 1y
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Please put me down for The Scarlet Letter also. And I might join in for Uncle Tom‘s Cabin. 1y
BarkingMadRead @CatLass007 let me know do you want to join us for Passage to India and I‘ll add you! The post is on my wall somewhere lol but since I post for Vanity Fair every day, it‘s wayyyyyyy on the bottom 1y
CatLass007 @BarkingMadRead Please include me in Passage to India. 1y
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Just to be clear, I want to read aaalll the books. 1y
TheAromaofBooks @CatLass007 - So sorry, I thought I had replied to your comment the other day!! I totally have you down for ALL the books 😂 1y
CatLass007 @TheAromaofBooks Yay! I didn‘t know for certain if you had me on the list for all the books or just the next one. I‘m glad to hear we‘re on the same page. I remember reading Kipling‘s Just So stories in elementary school and enjoying them. I‘m approaching Kim from a different frame of reference now because elementary school was a loooong time ago. But I think I should be okay. I have a definite opinion about editing classics to be (cont)⬇️ 1y
CatLass007 more palatable to today‘s readers. I‘m not easily offended by books written in the past. What offends me is someone who has such opinions now. 1y

Well, that‘s just a book I can check off the list. #Reading1001 #tBRTakedown December 2020

I think this is the last book from the #1001books list I‘ll be reading this year, so I‘ll be tallying those stats soon.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sadly I felt that way about a lot of the 1001 books I read. For every hidden gem, there were a lot...well I can call that read too now. 4y
Daisey @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yeah, I keep at it because I do think it‘s an interesting mix of books, and I do appreciate the group read aspect for books I truly want to read but have a hard time getting started on my own, but it‘s definitely got plenty of don‘t enjoy or understand their relevance. 4y

I have been busy with virtual school the last few days and haven‘t gotten outside long enough to take an actual walk. Today, I made time and it improved my mood so much. It was all the walk and not this book. The book does not suit me as a December read and reviews are not encouraging. However, it‘s also my last book for the #Reading1001 #TBRTakedown Challenge this year, so I‘m determined to get through it.

What‘s a baboo? What‘s a lama? (I know Dalai Lama is a title, but I still don‘t know what a lama is.) Mack Boob. Mack Bow Valley (or Mack Bow Bally?) - these are what might have been names (or what sounded like it on the audio). Thou and thee. I heard these words over and over. Beyond that, nothing registered. It just didn‘t interest me enough to keep my attention… not even a little bit.

I think you need to know what you‘re getting in to when you pick up Kim, and you need to be deeply invested in the time period, the setting, the culture, and the politics, in order to fully appreciate the story. I struggled to finish this one, but glad I finished. There were "yikes, I'm pretty sure that's textbook Orientalism" passages. And other parts where Kipling actually seems to be openly mocking British colonialism more than I'd expected. And still other stretches where I was honestly just falling asleep. It's just the risk you run with some late 19th/early 20th century novels. Not my favorite but glad I stuck it out. #litsyatoz #bookishmarginalia

So I didn't plan to be reading Kim on Memorial Day weekend. A book that's been criticized as a paean to white imperialism feels like a bizarre choice for the occasion (or maybe not, ha). But at least it finally feels like the plot's picking up, and there's a good quote now and again.

I don't know if this is a blame it on me or the book, but I didn't enjoy Kim at all. I started with the hard copy and switched to audio hoping that would help but to no avail. It's rich in imperialism, stereotypes, and prejudices. It's been touted as an adventure novel and while technically they did venture, I found very little adventurous about this book. ⭐️💫

I enjoyed this one! A half-Irish, half-Indian boy growing up in India strikes up a relationship with a Tibetan monk and it's as sweet as it sounds. They roam about India together and Kim gets recruited for spy work. He's sly and witty and I found this to be a fun adventure. #SpyNovels aren't really my thing. I could name a few spy/rogue characters that have a permanent place in my heart, but they are not strictly speaking from the spy novel genre. This is the closes I have gotten to reading one lately. Part spy novel, part coming of age story. Whatever else can be said of it, it does set the mould for spy characters in fiction. #PhotoadayNov16 @RealLifeReading

vivastory @Leniverse I'd seen this one before. Unaware of the spy elements. I'll have to check it out. 8y
Leniverse @vivastory They call it "the Great Game", and there are disguises, secret messages, code words, sleight of hand, clandestine map making, and general snooping around. The colonialism and stereotyping are problematic, but it's a great romp. 8y
vivastory @Leniverse Kipling's colonialist arrogance is definitely off-putting, he would do well to think more about some of his own liberating writing like the poem "If." Thanks for the recommendation, this is definitely going high on my YBR. 8y
Leniverse @vivastory The version on my photo there has an introduction by Edward W. Said which was quite good. More analysis than introduction, actually. Better read after the story itself. 8y
vivastory @Leniverse I will definitely try to find that edition. There were quite a few on Amazon with really pulpy covers. I'm a little shallow about book design. I like your copy. 8y

#Onewordtitles #photoadaynov16 well titles don't come shorter than this. A boys own adventure story of a mixed race orphan boy in India in the 19th century raised on the street, who becomes the servant of a wandering holy man and is eventually who is recruited into the great game against the Russians. And yes it is a book of its time with all of the stereotyping and prejudice that this implies, but if you overlook this it is a classic tale.

Well written rousing adventure and coming-of-age story with fantastic (almost all male) characters... if you can overlook the imperialist and essentialist stereotyping. Which, quite frankly, is a bit of an embarrassment. Good introduction by Edward W. Said.
