Pickpick

Soft pick. I chose this particular book because I wanted to hear Boudica's story from the mouth of a woman who could be critical of sexist sources who used Boudica's story to further their own agendas. In a way, she reveals those agendas and some of their biases. But, for the most part, she simply retells their stories without too much criticism (where it was due). 1/3

bookwyrm7 Perhaps, used to write as a scholar, she hides her own voice, simply wishing to present what is already out there without further critical analysis. Perhaps, it was my own hopes that led to my disappointment. But I still find she missed a few chances to really shine. 2/3 7d
bookwyrm7 There was a lot of repetition of ideas already mentioned but without exploring these in more detail, for example. She doesn't do a lot more than to point out the obvious a lot of the time.
Still, the book itself is a great way of telling what little there is about Boudica's story. A lot of research seems to have gone into it and I'm glad I read it. I'd definitely recommend it! 3/3

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 186

(Shame about the sticker in the middle of the cover!)

TrishB This is a great series if you want to push it up the list! 3y

This book is a great little book I listened to it on audio.
There are some ladies in this book I don't agree with but the others it was nice to learn a bit more about them.
Last book of the readathon. @Andrew65

TrishB I can see one on the front I don‘t agree with! (edited) 4y
Boooooks @TrishB same for me I‘m pretty sure most people round where I live hated Margaret Thatcher 😬 4y
Boooooks Looks interesting though I would like to find out more about Elizabeth I and Jane Austen and the impact they had 4y

TrishB @Boooooks I‘m from Liverpool, there is definitely no one here that likes Thatcher! My son has a hoodie on today that says Still Hate Thatcher! 4y
kaysworld1 @TrishB the section on her is about her life and how she got started before becoming primeminister, it's interesting about who and how she got her nicknames. 4y
Andrew65 Love the sound of this book, but I hate Thatcher too. I did most of my Thatcher years in Brixton, London but last 4 years in Sunderland. Both areas had a LOT of hate for her. I was a very able child in school (always at top of each class for maths I was in) left with good O Levels and A Levels (going to same secondary school as Ken Livingstone - since demolished!) but still ended up on the dole queue! @TrishB @Boooooks (edited) 4y
Boooooks @TrishB similar here in St. Helens with our town used to be a mining town I‘m pretty sure there were a few parties when she died 😬 4y

Pickpick

Gaius Valerius Verrens is serving in Britannia. On a mission to Camulodunum he hears the king of the Iceni is dying and the tribesmen are getting restless under Roman bad treatment.

This was very much a Roman's eye view of Boudicca's revolt. I found the romance between Valerius and Maeve unconvincing and the book only really took off when the revolt started. The action scenes were suspenseful even though I knew what historically had to happen.

Plenty of gladiators in these and Boudicca trying to get the tribes free 😢
Love this series, love Boudicca and always cry at her story.

GingerAntics I‘ve only read the first two, but I‘m hoping to get the second two eventually. 5y
TrishB @GingerAntics definitely worth it 👍🏻 5y
GingerAntics I just know how it‘s going to end, and I don‘t want it to end. I love the world she‘s created. I‘ve got to see what happens with her brother. I‘m still reeling that her husband-ish guy (I know it‘s not the same as our culture) just didn‘t come back. That made me sad. 5y

TrishB @GingerAntics cried buckets at the end 😢 5y
Cinfhen Warrior Queen 👑 🥰sounds awesome 5y
GingerAntics At the end of the 4th one? That‘s what a fear!!! It‘s not like she can just go completely against history...although that could be a fun alternate universe type story. Hm. I may have to explore that a bit. 5y
CrowCAH I‘ve it when cover art stays consistent through the series! 5y
TrishB @CrowCAH it‘s just the little one that annoys me! 5y
CrowCAH @TrishB agreed! 5y
GingerAntics The digital copies have different covers and it drives me nuts. I almost don‘t want to read the ending of the series because I know I‘m not going to be happy. 5y
TrishB @GingerAntics understandable! 5y
LeahBergen I should read this series. I love Boudicca! 5y
GingerAntics @LeahBergen it‘s very well written. So we‘ll written, in fact, my brain has attempted to convince me it might end different. lol 5y
TrishB @LeahBergen you‘ll definitely cry! 5y
TrishB @GingerAntics it doesn‘t 😢 5y
GingerAntics I know. Sadly. It‘s just so well written, you have to remind yourself of that sometimes. 5y
LeahBergen I read a great big doorstopper of a novel about her by a Canadian author and yes ... 😭😭😭. 5y
LeahBergen Ah, I just saw that you‘ve read that one, too. 😆 5y
TrishB @LeahBergen I brought that one on your recommendation and cried again! I always cry when RIII dies too.... 5y
GingerAntics @TrishB @LeahBergen I‘ve added The Eagle and the Raven to my list. It looks really good. I‘ll start stalking myself for the obvious conclusion, now. lol 5y
Cathythoughts Hi Trish , a friend recommended the Boudica novels 🤔.. don‘t know them. But I see your post here coming up ... please what would be a good one to start with .. ? When you have a minute 4y
Cathythoughts Sorry Trish .. I see it hear Dreaming The Eagle seems to be the first one 👍🏻❤️ 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts it is 👍🏻 hope you like it, I really loved this series ❤️ 4y
Cathythoughts I‘m going to try it - even though it‘s not my usual .... I‘ll let you know 👍🏻😘 4y

Entertaining and educational. Would be a good for anyone interested in history and living in the UK and also people visiting the UK and wanting to know more about it. I learnt quite a lot from this book and it was fun to do so.
